Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

So in that case, how's that "Console-to-PC transfer" issue coming along? I mean since clearly the team has much more free time and money since they are no longer worrying about consoles, pre-Odyssey PC development, and now the tiling issue. I mean come on Bruce, with all the stuff that the team is no longer working on, this does beg the question about whether the team is going to make it at least an option for the 1/3rd of your customer base to move over to PC to keep playing the "Not-Dead" version of the game. Or at the very least stop keeping us in suspense and tell us that we are SOL, and should just move on with our lives. I mean I dont want to do that, but can we get some kind of update as to what the team's status is in relation to this?

Not sure if I’m just jumping in on what was a rhetorical question here Ratty, so apologies if that’s the case!

I think the reality of this is that it’s an issue but not a bug. The issue is rather an emergent artefact of the principles that the new planet generation system works on.

Assuming that is correct it means it’s not something that can be ‘fixed’ in the normal sense. Instead fixing this issue would likely mean changing to a planet generation system that works on a different set of principles. The problem with doing that is threefold. Firstly, there’s the cost, time and resource of doing. Secondly, there’s the impact of resetting all the planets. Thirdly, whatever system they changed it to would have its own set of inherent drawbacks as well, which would result in their own set of complaints.
You missed the biggest point, namely that fixing this development would be Frontier admitting that it was not the correct path to pursue in the first place, and they have historically not been capable of admitting their mistakes.

No, they've just gone on to publish a space game for the last eight years :)
Indeed, and it has been an ongoing case of people such as yourself settling for less because you don't understand what has been lost with the "progress".

Not only is the tiling a problem, but the galaxy became largely less spectacular in the process, or have you missed all of the people begging for the old terrains to be restored, the mists, etc?

In a great many ways, Odyssey is Beige Plague 2.0.

What should I do then if I don't play the game I get, make a stink on the Internet?

I imagine them slowly making it better like they've done in the past, though of course that might be naive.. :D

It's getting clear that we won't have any roadmap from FD for 2022, but at least could we have a roapmap of what won't be fix on 2022 ?

On what grounds are you asserting that it was not the correct path? Every other path would have had their negatives aspects too.

Do you mean having mouse headlook? If so, there’s a keybind for it.

If you mean that you’re using mouse headlook but other people can’t see your head moving when you do, then no idea.
Yeah, the second one. I like the automatic head movement, but cant figure out why it's like that. When on-foot, your head moves as you look around with mouse but when you hop in an SRV or get in a ship, it's like a whole other being is in there. Does that actually save data? How about making that optional? I'd prefer my commanders head to look where Im looking. Not a big deal though.

So am I not a "doomer" anymore for pointing out they gave up on this game last year, or do I have to wait for the "with a heavy heart" post?
It's "Doomster", kinda like a Teamster, but with cooler uniforms and more reasonable union dues.

Hey, maybe this means they’ll fix lighting and antialiasing now… 😏
Lightning... do you mean the heat it brings on gpu while switching to windows while standing in these areas, for example stations watching at big publicities in the center? noticed some gains while i was in high light zones, at stations or on enlightened face of the planetoids..... would be weird not to be alone in my case. Still got an aggressive fan curve and reduction on the gpu power. Only solution i found to counter that heat coming when leting the game run in the background while i consider some researchs in the browser.... like inara or else. funny thing. 🤞😒
