Newcomer / Intro It finally happened

I was on my way to a port to pick up a rare item in my shiny new Cobra. I was almost there when I got interdicted. I saw the CMDR before the name and I knew I had no chance, so I throttled up and dumped all my power into the engines and boosted out of there. Unfortunately, he was more powerful than me and I think he had me exploded in like 3 seconds. It took all the cash I had left to pay the insurance and restore my ship, so now here I sit with 1000 credits and a cobra to my name.

/sigh

It's alright, that's open play. To me this is the cost of doing business. I just wish it happened on a day when I had more cash in my account.

I get the feeling these pirates hang out at places where rares are sold. He didn't even give me a chance to drop my cargo, which I would have gladly done, as I was not far from where I purchased it. Some people just want to kill for the sake of killing I suppose. I wasn't much of a challenge for him.

Well, yes, I feel mild sympathy for you but it's hardly newsworthy or something unexpectedly new to the game, is it. The game IS called Elite: Dangerous, not Elite: Mild Peril But No Risk Of Anything Actually Nasty. :)

OP: there's a site where you can put a bounty on the guy. Can't recall the address though.

Some rares systems have a lot of pirates and PvP fans. Some not so much. I find it is worse near Altair, Tanmark (and nearby systems), anything near the Lave/Leesti area and Ethgreze.

it hurts

The worst I've had is just coming back from a long range exploring trip. Jumped around 60+ times into the closest system with a station where I could drop off my data and got interdicted - I only had 60% hull on my Asp but had full shields - but the Anaconda just covered me with missiles before I hd a chance to throttle up.

I had loads of cash so that wasn't the issue. it was just the days and days of exploring that went to waste (around 300 systems worth) Hey ho - plenty more systems out there.

I know that, that's why I play open play. I expected to get pasted, especially now that I'm inexperienced and have little money. I sort of expected to get blown up a lot sooner. I've been playing for a couple weeks now. It's alright, I made a note of the CMDR who wrecked my brand new ship and one day I just may cross paths with him again, hopefully I will be better prepared to give him a fair fight.

The problem is indeed that this EVE style "piracy", AKA blowing ships up for lols has no serious consequences what so ever. Frontier are damaging the appeal of playing in Open by making the enjoyment very one way.

Hm. You think? ;)

Doing rares is the quickest way to riches (so I've heard. Never tried it) so you should be expecting a considerable risk.
Now, there's another topic here, of course, which is the risk-reward ratio for plain killers, but leaving this aside, I believe
there's nothing to see here. Move along (as you seem to do +1).
Just let us not call those players Pirates.

I did rares, its not all it's cracked up to be. Best I did was in tanmark after taking on a mission to kill pirates for 5 days.
Got 35 onionhead and up to 9 tanmrk tea. But in the same time it took to make a 300Ly round trip for 750k or so, I made over 2 million in RES bountyhunting.

When the supply of rares are limited, 150 Ly is a lot of time, and time is money.

Yeah, rares are only good up to a point. When you get up to 100T of cargo space its more profitable (per hour) trading normal commodities.

But yes, pirates always hang around the systems which have rares. Cobras are fast though, you should really be able to outrun mostly anything, just 4 pips to engines - 2 to shields and don't fly in a predictable straight line. Always submit to an interdiction too - makes your FSD cooldown much quicker.

That's pretty much what I did. Though I didn't try to submit, but I don't think my FSD would have cooled down fast enough to survive. I think if I had more money to have a better outfitted cobra, I might have had a chance. I did bounty hunting in RES's for a while, but I wanted to do something different and a little risky. Trading seemed to be that thing. It was fun, and I am going to keep doing it. I do need to get better at escaping. I don't think I would enjoy earning all my money in solo play. Take away the element of danger and what have you got? Not very much really. In all the time I spent playing this game in the past two week and only got killed once by a pirate, I think that's pretty good. I'd chalk it up as the cost of doing business. I'm still learning to play this game, and I imagine so are the pirates. I'd like to get good enough to take them on. I probably won't, simply because I don't engage in pvp that much. True heroes aren't born by playing it safe. If this pirate earned all his money in solo play just so he can use the money to pop the hulls of far less experienced players who pose no threat or challenge to him? Well, then I feel very sorry for him, because he must lead a very dull and joyless life.

By the way, have any of you tried to fly out to the Hutton Orbital in Alpha Centauri? Never again will I make that trip, its just not worth it.

If you submit, you drop out of SC in a controlled way. You don't spin out of control like you do when you lose the interdiction.

Additionally, your interdictor will drop out of the minigame behind you if you submit. If you don't submit, and lose, they often drop out in front of you.

In short, you should always submit to interdiction, even if you intend to fight.

I did consider "random acts of ganking" as an alternative title.

This is correct.
FSD not suffering from failure there for it is not a brute drop
Hull and modules will take no damage and the FSD only have to recharge for a few seconds

Best to submit with pointing towards escape vector though.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Can you explain?

*edit*

Oh! I think you quoted the wrong post.

Well, after licking my wounds for a day, I'm back at it now. I earned a few credits this morning doing some random missions and collected a couple of bounties. It's all good. There's some good info in this thread, especially about the submitting to interdiction being better because you have a better chance of escape. I appreciate the advice CMDRs. I still have my cobra so I feel like I haven't lost too much from this experience. I gained a lot of valuable knowlege which I can use in the future. :)

Another minor tip, set engines to 4 pips before engaging frame-shift drive, so if interdicted you're ready to run the instant you drop out. Every second counts.
