Ah, but from functional, informational, logical and symbolic points of view, there is no linguistic difference between a nodding or laughing head and the salute - behind the scenes, they are all collections of symbols to which something or someone attributes meaning, whether letters, numbers, punctuation, cuneiform, hieroglyphics, memes etc. The only differences here are that a) you don't like people using digits as symbols - somewhat ironic as a digit is almost the definition of a symbol, and b) the rendering engine for the forum has graphical representations for nodding and laughing, but not saluting - I have used a number which do.

While I would agree that the salute is less well known than many others, and that pictures are often (but certainly not always) more meaningful than a collection of characters, it functions in exactly the same way and serves exactly the same purpose as any other symbol. If the forum supported o7, we wouldn't be having this conversation, but the OP's joke would have confused everyone.

When I woke up this morning I didn't think I'd be debating linguistic symbology. What a high-brow forum this is becoming ;)

Bikers wave with their left arm because they need to keep their throttle from snapping shut. Maybe Elite pilots switched over to a left salute so's they could keep a firm grip of their joystick whilst performing the gesture.

I'm surprised that people (particularly in the UK) find it amusing to play about with 7th July (or 7/7) considering what happened in London 12 years ago. Have a good day though.


(I'm in a bad mood because I have wasted an afternoon flogging stuff on black markets only to find that my stats won't update, no matter what I smuggle or to where or how much!)
