It's time for a steamcharts thread!

Whats funny is these conversations come up all the time with League of Legends.

What happens is there are new games that come out. Like Fortnite. But after a while people end up going back to league.

People ran numbers with Korea PC gangs, EUW and NA. League Fluctuates quite often but always holds a solid ground. Eventually it ends up back on top after a while.

All games go through this. I dont think games really "die off" anymore. Not games like Elite or League or Fortnite.

Its just people move around then go back to what they love. It happens with all games.

I like these types of threads because people get their panties in a twist over numbers going up and down. Its just a gaming economy.

Hell look at No mans sky. It had a recurection for a couple of months. And its basically back where it was.

Companies also pay streamers, like Dr Disrespect, DisguisedToast , Sequeshia and Pewdiepie all get contracted to play their games. You can see in their titles with #ad if you watch twitch streamers. They pay them to bring an audience to their game. So no matter the game the numbers can get radical.

Elite not going anywhere but up. Even if the numbers do fluctuate a bit.

OP, don't you know how this works...

Steam charts are only ever meant to be used on the forum when they clearly spell out doom for the game. This is a blatant misuse of statistics :p. :D

This actually isnt entire true. When you look at the graphs it may be flatlining again, but that is due to the scale of the axis. Its baseline before NEXT was +-1500 people, its baseline after NEXT became +-4500. Sure, there was a massive spike that then died out again, but the net result is that the actual core group of players tripled. NMS before next was almost a graveyard, and it is now quite healthy. :) Thats the thing with these graphs: sure it went up, that isnt surprising. What is a bit surprising is how much it went up. But it will indeed go down again. What will be interesting then will be how far. Will it dip below? That would mean people gave 3.3 a chance and just gave up on the game. Will it be higher? Than FD managed to solidify the core base, which is good news for the next DLC sales for them.

To be fair, I think even Fdev knew this year was going to be a bit slow. They made some core adjustments and while they brought in some really cool updated game play. It was gameplay we already had. This was intentional. Core Mechanics really needed a fleshing out. We all asked for that.

So because this this year has been dreadfully slow. But its understandable.

Whatever the new DLC is which will probably make our heads spin will tie even more of that together and give us some new things play with. Im really looking forward to it because when it happens we will have a pretty large and steady baseline of players. The average will continue to climb with proper gameplay loops and additions.

This year is going to kick our butts. Cant wait until they give use the outlook for the year so we can see what they are working on. Hope they do that again. Even that brings people back in the meantime.

kid, that's just 90's level of delusional.

You would have thought that so many people would have left because the PPOO didn't happen, PVP still exists within a vacuum, and the 'unethical' use of 'modes' has not changed. [haha]

Whatever they are working on will not bring about your desired changes! So, what then?

Calm down the game was on sale on a few websites for about a month, those numbers will go down in a few months from now. Let the new player experience the first 10 hours of content until they realize the shallowness of the game.

That wasn't the first sale though and obviously you missed the point. Everyone knows the numbers will go down again. Probably much sooner than a few months. The point is that the current numbers are higher than usually after sales / major updates, which is quite funny because some people insist that the game is dying based on steamcharts.

It's great to see a number of nay-sayers have turned around and now want to look at the Steam data...

So, what do we see with the latest Steam charts or database numbers? Numbers for the peak and average players have increased in the past 30-60 days. This coincides with the big Q4 final Beyond release as well as holidays, and this sudden increase has been a pattern every year aligned to other game updates and holidays. And the trend right now already shows the numbers declining as they have after spiking for previous game updates and holiday periods. So what does this mean OP?

Guess there could be a number of explanations but two most likely:
A. there's a sudden rush of new customers
B. existing non-playing customers have come back to try the update and/or play during extra holiday time

For scenario A: what happened around Dec 10/11 that would suddenly drive a rush of new players during this period and only this period? Elite has been constantly discounted throughout the year, and the data doesn't suggest any significant increases that correlate to this influence of the game being on sale. And TMK Elite wasn't released on a new platform during this period that would suddenly add to Steam. Other remote chance is that there was a large number of new customers who have waited and only purchased the game on launch day of a somewhat insignificant update to a 4-year old game - probably unlikely.

Scenario B: we can probably all agree here is the logical explanation for the increase is from existing non-playing customers coming back to try the Q4 Beyond launch which took place on Dec 11th.

So, the numbers the OP is asking us to look at tell us once again many existing customers (not new customers) have stopped playing the game and only come back during updates or when they have extra time to fill. Is that what you were trying to get across here OP? Is it a good thing that half or even the majority of existing customers only play when they hope something has changed or when they have a significant amount of extra time? Hmm...

To harp on my old point: the player numbers are a bit higher than they usually are after sales, while the price was much lower than its ever been during a sale. You think that if the sale price had been the same as previous sales ($30ish for full game) that the current player numbers would be the same right now?

Errr, yes? I dont know about you but I tend not to play when I'm in the office. I also tend to play games when they get a cool new update. I also tend to watch TV series when new episodes are available and I have time to watch them. That is what normal human beings kinda do, for some reason.

If the price would be higher, current player numbers would be lower, I agree with you on that. That doesn't mean that we have currently more new players than we had at previous sales though. With each sale there will be less and less potential customers, the cost of the game is balanced according to the interest of the remaining potential customers.

Actually the concurrent peak still increases, we've been at 7070 when I started the thread one week ago and are currently at 7800.

Concurrent peak is not the average players for a 30 day timeframe... And average for january will be calculated for january. The true question is, will the guys spend as much as 60 hours on average.

Wow if your theory is correct ED must be selling like hotcakes four years after release, that's really good news and very very positive indeed.

There are no possible downsides to such a massive sales boom at this point.

Bodes very well for the upcoming new season of paid content.

I already got that, I am not stupid... ;)

If concurrent players are at its peak for January, the question is if the drop will be big enough to go below 7000 for January. I doubt that but only time will tell.

Concurrent peak was in december... Monthly average player is not concurent player (again).

I have no theories, just stating the obvious. For the 60 hours thing, that's something FDev told...

Also, I'm pretty sure some hotcakes costed much more than Elite and sold less during the winter sales.

Sixty hours is great news, the average for games is around twenty so again thats really positive news.

As someone who has been playing non-stop since the update (though not through Steam), I'm starting to lose "steam" myself thanks to all the bugs that I was able to ignore for a short while. I'm not done yet, but other games are starting to catch my eye, some of which might steal me away from ED for quite some time... How do the stars at night look in Red Dead Redemption 2?
