It's time to revisit the PVP rebuy. Distant Ganks 2 makes the point.

That a larger "membership" would result in a higher probability of encountering another player is not contested. I responded to "instances tolerating larger numbers of players".

I suppose I mispoke. I'm thinking in terms of server traffic with similar pings in similar regions. My understanding is that a PG could very well be spread across multiple continents. Even though even though you're in the same pg, you would be very unlikely to be instanced with them. If you're in open though, there are more players with similar network profiles you would likely see.

For example, there might be a Mobius player in Australia, and one in Germany, they probably will never see one another even though they are in the same pg.

Fair point - but in Open one cannot guarantee to meet a player whose play-style is not at odds with one's own. It's up to the player to make their choice of game mode.

I don't know how to make this any clearer without being super blunt.

I was'nt asking to include a PvP element in the event, I was raising the point that the majority of the sodium being tossed around could have been prevented simply by having a least a small amount of players who are combat capable camping out in the waypoints to deter anyone from upsetting the expedition. Hell if enough were involed I very much doubt that most of the escort would ever have to fire a shot.

You haven't really thought this through have you? 13,000 players, average of 25 per instance, you're talking of over 500 instances to protect. So you're talking several thousands defenders. Are YOU going to vette each and every one of them and pick out your army of defenders, all of who are really trustworthy and wont break your rules, cross their hearts. Come on, get real and understand the scale of this event is unprecedented. PGs are the ONLY effective defence, and even those aint totally secure.:)

The PG stuff was effectively the nail in the coffin for any chance of cohesion this event had.

The event is working perfectly well. The people who signed up to take part knew for a year that open is a conscious choice they make because no one holds a gun to their heads when clicking open play. Its on the very sign up page!! Have you ever thought some chose open play because they want the added danger it gives them? You'd have a point if thousands of players where on here moaning they'd been blown away on DW in open, as far as I see there are very few complaints. You're making out this isn't working as intended. The explorers who chose PGs are having an amazing event, the ones who chose open are getting the danger they accepted when clicking on that mode, and the PvPer are having a jolly good game of it too. The only "problems" are the ones you're desperately reaching for.

After that drama kicked off the explorer community basically threw some of thier own to the wolves.

It might have been risky with admitting people into the PG, but the point remains, the majority of the deaths that occured on DW were more than preventable. Be it through taking longer time before the event to vet players entering the PG, or simply by doing the whole thing in open with an armed escort, whcih would have been the effective measure of giving your would be gankers a big fat wing flavoured middle finger. And I'm pretty sure if some of the explorers had thier way, they'd snatch revenge at the drop of a hat. Not to far a stretch to even think some of thier camp might even sign on for security detail themselves.

Sure its not fool proof (instancing, time active etc) but it would have been a lot more effective than the way it played out.

Either way the potential for people to work together to overcome the biggest adversity they would be likely to face, was unfotunaly, utterly squandered.

Oh boy. Where to start on this little lot? I can't be bothered. Just read this and educate yourself how this game works, and how these kinds of events are not suited for the gameplay you're dreaming of.

Which is where the introduction of a set of optional Private Group rules could be beneficial for players of different play-styles, for example:

For PvP:
  • Enable mass-lock delay on hyper-jumps if due to player ship? [yes/no]
  • Increase menu exit delay if "in danger" determination includes player attack? [yes/no]
  • Disable menu exit option if "in danger" determination includes player attack? [yes/no]
  • Lost connection while "in danger" due to player attack results in destruction / rebuy? [yes/no]
For PvE:
  • Disable player / player interdiction? [yes/no]
  • Disable player / player wake following? [yes/no]
  • Disable player / player wake dropping? [yes/no]
  • Kick player on attacking another player and move attacking player to a Solo instance? [yes/no]
  • Kick player on destroying another player and move attacking player to a Solo instance? [yes/no]
  • Remove menu exit delay if "in danger" flag was only set due to player attack? [yes/no]
For all play-styles:
  • Move player to another instance after a period of inactivity on a landing pad.

Now with something like this, maybe there's a chance these events can be more inclusive!

+rep :)

I think the only way I could encounter a player whose play style was at odds with my own in Open was if I encountered a player inclined to cheat when things didn't go the way they'd hoped for their CMDR.

Anyone who is willing to let the cards fall as they may is my kind of player, even if our characters have nothing in common and only wave to each other--or exchange weapons fire, as the case may be--in passing.

Forgive my ignorance, I don't know who all the people involved are per se, but why did the Distant Worlds 2 staff not want to repair you? Have you attacked DW2 previously or something?

So, I was cruising around the DW2 WP4 system when I scraped the exclusion zone of a planet while gravity breaking. Damage was minor and I repaired everything I could with my AFMU, but I wanted to top off my hull integrity (just in case) and lacked a repair limpet controller of my own. Seeing this was one of the waypoints, I figured I'd ask for some repairs in System, but the response I received was not encouraging:

A moment later CMDR DeathDingo offered to repair my vessel. Having fought this CMDR on more than one occasion in the past and being aware of his current affiliation with Distant Ganks, I was slightly hesitant, but figured that if he did decide to attack my CMDR's vessel, I'd have ample opportunity to escape before suffering severe damage. Since no one else seemed to be particularly forthcoming with assistance, I agreed...

Apparently, they assumed I was trying to lure them into Open in order to attack them...because I was in Open. My CMDR hasn't attacked any of them, or anyone else, except a handful of Distant Ganks members (who either fired first or advanced menacingly!), since the start of this expedition.

I do understand their caution (overly fragile ships don't leave much margin for breaches of trust or giving the benefit of the doubt), but I was really just looking for a repair limpet.

Yeah it's understandable unfortunately. I was trying to call in a similar repair from the DW mechanics and their answer was to head to PG. Would rather have the 1% hull damage till the next station then go to PG tbh. But I don't blame them for not coming out when they don't know me personally.

So are they exploring or wasting time? You're really spinning my head here, because surely you're not implying the gankers can get to waypoint 4 in fewer jumps / less time than the explorers.

Doh. You really haven't thought that one through and are displaying a bit of stupidity here.

The clue is in the name. Explorer. Say it out loud a few times. The penny may eventually drop. Or not.

To spell it out for you... How long did it take somebody we all know, and has confirmed on this very forum, to get from Guardian ruins in Skaude Sector to WP4 in a 19Ly combat ship?

How long would the same journey take for an {raises voice} EXPLORER to make? In, let's say, a 50Ly explorer ship. Less time? Or more time?

Poor combat ship pilot.

Exploration isn't about the destination. It's all about the journey.
Unlike ganking. That's purely about the destination. Pitiful.

In the Gank Wars, whoever spends more time being bored or annoyed is the loser. Gankers lose when they expend a lot of time and effort but don't get to kill or annoy anyone. Explorers only lose when they get ganked. For most explorers, the risk of being ganked is so low that they don't even bother to take the most basic defensive precautions against it. Being able to get somewhere in 98 jumps instead of 99 is literally more important to them than any concerns about surviving an interdiction.

Wrong.
You simply admitting that you possess not the tiniest clue about what you're talking about.
I could explain it to you, but I'd be wasting my breath, because if you haven't understood by now, you probably never will, regardless of whatever words people may use.

Same as when I bought my first Porsche, some people asked "why not a TVR?" or "why not a BMW?" Same thing. If you don't already understand, then no matter which words I use, you'll, in all likelihood, *still* never understand.

:)

That's another example of Fleetcomm incompetence right there, big time. Inexcusable that they don't know who is trying to protect them and be prepared to render assistance on the spot. Pathetic. You really need to examine your priorities, Ziljan. Over in the DG a guy like you is valued and appreciated, not ignored and besmirched; the DWE roster does not deserve you.

Daft question.

Is fleetcomm being ran by the same cretins that 'organised' Salome's protection detail?

Because this feels awfully familiar.

i think fleetcomm/ DW2 all play in PG, and advise all those on the trip to stick to PG or solo. so - i doubt they care much about open given they have warned players of the risk and provided alternatives that they have pushed people towards

I'm very satisfied to my current exploration trip in a 19ly combat ship. I have found many undiscovered Earth-like worlds so far, some black holes, and did a little survey in an area I find interesting. I'm not strictly following DW2 at the moment, because I want to spend some time in Colonia before visiting the new station near Sag A*. Currently 100 jumps left for Kashyapa, and then it's time to have a small break, bounty hunting and spending some time with those crazy sadhus that live there. I believe they call this area of space The Festival Grounds. Whilst visiting Conflux abandoned settlements, I did also meet this CMDR DeathDingo, we exchanged a few friendly volleys of multicannon-fire, and what I presumed was long range railguns, before merrily parting ways.

"The irony of needing to rely on DG for help."

Let's be realistic, morbad doesn' rely on anything, he could probably navigate to sag A in a rowboat with a sextant (which I know doesn't help in space).

He is one of the a few "explorers" I'd believe Death Dingo might not murder with ease.

Anyway all that said, this is a a wonderful video. You're right it's kind of ironic, but also in a way kind of "of course". Two skilled CMDRs have an interaction, and it's interesting. One skilled commander and one... not so skilled... and it's fairly predictable, unless the skilled commander goes out of his way to make it lulz-y.

Deathdingo was in no position to murder Morbad, easily or otherwise. I suspect the vette he was in is going to take fire from a wing of 4 and still have no problemo jumping to safety. Morbad put himself in that position for purely roleplay reasons.

OK Count Dracula. Forgive my insolence. I am just a miserable little pile of secrets, after all. I really hope that when people ask about your Porsche that you literally tell them that you won't waste your breath because they couldn't possibly understand. Please tell me that's something you really do. I want to believe.
