Jacques Station + EOL PROU nebula and the barnacle hunt

I'm still on my way, I swear; about 8 kylie out. I got distracted by a few ELWs, a mini neutron field, and a large icy body (20 earth radii) which was orbiting a neutron star.

Should be arriving near end of week.

And you have still to encounter the (at least) 3 supernova remnants/nebulae and a ringed earthlike that can be found in the last 4000 light years

Alright, apologies, the Barnacle search candidate took a bit longer than promised, due to the complexity of the candidate submission sheet inside the official barnacle sheet, i had to tweak the doc a bit. Right now it would only slow us down with info that would only be helpful if we had already found a Bncl.

So here's a googledoc table with some additional information on Barnacle hunting, known positions on (a-list) candidates and a sheet that anyone can work on. I deliberately kept the amount of data input very low, we might work on that depending on how things develop. Feel free to drop a comment or pm me if anything comes to mind that needs correction/improvement. Thanks

You can find the doc here

For anyone interested, the second sheet let's you submit your candidates, they will be reviewed but should show up quickly, the first one is a list of known and confirmed candidates inside the (a-candidate) search parameters. If you want edit access for the main sheet drop me a pm

Thx for making/organizing the Barnacle Spreadsheet, CMDR Snooch leBooch :)

CMDR WER NUR

Thanks, to be honest it wasn't too much effort though, (wait until we transfer the stuff to the official bcl meta sheet, that's serious xls-ing over there :))hoping we can get this to be a help for the community. Thinking of adding a prospecting sheet or similar to it. If anybody has an idea let me know, i have a 3 days no-work window coming up.

Thanks Snooch...I have started adding my finds.

Thanks Kenworth, much appreciated.

Shout out to all of you, if you can think of anything to add to the list that might help us in the short run/while waiting for the situation to get a bit clearer, please do so. I'm thinking prospecting data, surface prospecting, that kind of thing. Let me know if you are interested in editing the sheets too, you'd be very welcome.

Hi everyone!

Thanks to Snooch for organising the hunt! I will contribute my finds as I come across them. So far I found that there is an intriguing lack of Barnacle candidates in the nebula right next door to Jacques!

I also wanted to conduct some experiments with the two UAs I brought along but alas, they are already gone... :-( The first one was destroyed involuntarily, and the second one was snatched away from me by an NPC, as I placed it next to the Nav beacon to find out if that did anything. Well, at least I made him pay!

But that means I am out of research material at the moment. So I'll stay around for a couple of days more and look for barnacles, and then I'll head back to the bubble, bringing new Meta Alloys and two more UAs. Maybe I'll be in time to return with the first of the August Exodus trips to Jacques. But most definitely with the second one.

Cheers, CMDR Heisenberg6626

Hello Cmdr, sorry to hear about your loss, if you still are intent on doing some testing i could always drop you one UA.. for science. That way you wouldn't have to go back. Mind, i did all i could think of with the ua's i'm carrying, i actually have about 2 hours of footage of UA's doing.. not much - to analyze sounds and the distortion. Maybe you can come up with something ingenious while out here. Let me know if interested.

304t MAs delivered. (13MCr loss!). Now I'm feeling very tired, so I might take a break for a bit and maybe also evaluate which storylines to focus on - I don't have the time/stamina to do everything. I didn't bring a SRV or refinery so I'm not likely to stick around for long; I might try looking for Barnacle-friendly worlds in a nebula or two nearby but will probably be heading back to bubble in a couple of days. Happy hunting everyone!

Hi there, thanks for the condolences. Basically my own fault. :-/ Maybe I shouldn't be trusted with the buggers. Thanks for the offer of sharing a UA, though. :)

The only thing I have thought of so far was putting them somewhere and see whether they change their song. I remember that Jacques said "They sing to you" in one of his messages. But so far I am having a really hard time to really decipher the sounds they are making. Somehow in my sound programs it never looks as clean and clear-cut as in the posts of the people who did it originally. :) So so far I could not really say if they do spell out anything else than our ships.

The only ideas I had so far was o try and let them scan the nav beacon instead of our ships, but as I said, that resulted in a loss of the UA. Somehow I do not think that "putting a UA next to commodity X" will be a worthwhile set of tests, but you never know. Releasing them in Jacques station was another idea -- but that would almost certainly also result in a loss.

The 'put commodity X next to a UA' has certainly been done for everything, so far as I know - even rares. Dropping them inside stations has also been done (not always on purpose!). At the very least you would get a fine but it might also be difficult to recover afterwards, depending on where it finishes up inside the station.
.
I would save your UAs and check for their pointing when dropped near some of the surrounding nebulae - I doubt (m)any of those have been tested, as very few UAs have been brought out so far. I had been preparing to try something like that myself and my Asp Explorer even has a corrosion-resistant rack installed, so it would be interesting to see if that produces anything. Even a null result would be helpful, as it might be taken to imply that they are 'programmed' specifically to look for something in Merope, not a specific something that might be found in other nebulae also.

I agree, that would be very nice -- I have tried the direction of pointing a few times, but always got the feeling that they point towards Merope, but I have only checked near Jacques System, and not measured down to the degree.

If there are any CMDRs likely to arrive at Jaque's soon that have any limpets spare CMDR Stagno Jones would be very very grateful for a donation. Please let me know on here if you do and we can arrange to meet. [up]

I can report that i dropped mine in about 15 locations inside "Jaque's" nebula and also on the way here, so far they did only point towards Merope. After i finished surveying this Nebula i was planning on taking a look at surrounding nebulae, but i have a feeling they won't change their behavior (it's up for debate if their purpose is only to point for something we haven't found on M5C). Anyway, won't find anything out without trying :)

Sadly no special singing effects other than the usual for me. I'll have some time tomorrow and see if i can find the audio related guide on the threadnaught about isolating certain parts of a recording. Was thinking about putting a 'tools for barnacle hunters' list up anyway, those helped me a lot. As for the UA, let me know if you want it and we meet up.

Small heads-up to all that already took a look at the candidate sheet, due to recent findings i had to change the temperature for a-list candidates slightly (up to 450k)

is there a thread that deals with known barnacle locations and the system characteristics in which they're located, type of star, distance from star etc. I've seen a couple but they're poorly organised.

Thanks for the doc! Bookmarked. Will update.

This should do the trick https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...3GQhC5KT-o9u05ihWKXebt4BcM/edit#gid=699546157 . For more plaintext about Barnacles check the 2nd post here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...Barnacles-other-mysteries-Thread-7-The-Canonn It's a bit farther down under 'barnacle facts'

Not sure you'd call it a song, but they are definetely strange sounds and reactions. Check out this post from RiZ@L and his latest test AND REPLY from the UP! Maybe that's what Jaques met on his way there?
Anyone wanna go look for a UP and bring it to Jaques? ;)

Have you turned off all non-essential equipment on your ship? Thrusters and other modules make noise, even without input.

Ah yes i see the update so with an UA in youre hold, if u deploy a UP and then honk it with the advanced discovery scanner it shuts youre ship down after scanning u back.

And if you follow the thread a bit further, it actually draws a picture when running a spectrogram on it! Exciting times! :)
