Just don't feel like logging in...

Its not in the same league as my memory of the original.

You should compare them in the context of what was possible at the time. Original Elite redefined gaming and did impossible things with the hardware, its competitors were Pac Man and Chuckie Egg! ED uses a few standard API calls to draw pretty 3D graphics just like every other contemporary game; it's not the same achievement by any stretch of the imagination.

I started playing in Alpha and began playing less and less shortly before release when I realized that there won't be substantial improvements wrt depths for a prolonged time. Besides, for my taste there are more interesting new games on the horizon like DCS World 2.0, so I can wait and just hope for the best for ED's development in the upcoming 6-12 months.

Yup, I'm in the same boat. Today is the first day I've played in about a month.. and that was only to satisfy my curiosity of Beta 1.1 :)
I love Elite, always have.. I just need fresh motivation to keep plugging away I think.

Everyone romanced over a modern version of the classic elite, I think we got that. The problem is that we are finding that a 1984 game doesn't satisfy our gaming itch. It did back then because home computers were new, gaming was in its infancy and Elite packed in so much compared to its rivals that it blew us away.

To be honest, I would say that the 1984 version was a better game than ED is right now. Sure, it had much less gameplay elements, but they were in a very good balance and would let the players choose what risk he was willing to take. Jumping into an anarchy system and making it to the station was always a challenge, as was forcing a misjump and fighting it out with the Thargoids.

Where are the situations in ED that require you to fight with tooth and nails just to come out alive?

I have friends that ask me "how's ED?" basically because I was so enthusiastic about in during early beta, and my response now is "the ED universe is great but there's not much to do in it yet."

Exactly what happens to me.

And four of my colleagues at work who got ED, don't play it any more.

There seem to be a lot of 'lack of content' threads, but not many 'suggested content' replys. To those bemoaning a lack of content, what extra content do you want? How should it work? How SHOULD it effect the galaxy? How should trading and war effect markets, and politics? How do you scale that to a whole galaxy of stars? Or even just the inhabited 'core'?

The thinking has already been done, here are a few exceprts of the DDF:

I would of gladly waited another 6 months......
I'm a kickstarter backer,

I think that's part of the problem for me too.

During P. Beta someone asked how much of the game we were seeing, the reply from one of the Devs was 'about 5%'.

So for release I was really excited and looking forward to all the 'richness' (DB's favorite word) of the 95% we hadn't seen.

It was all a big disappointment as what we had in Beta is what we got on release and nothing has really changed since.

Maybe in another 6 months

We just need to give it time. And yes i know this is annoying (for everyone, Frontier included!). If we at least get a couple of expansions out, the game overall will be in much better 'content' shape, as they won't just be the core function of the expansion (FPS/Planet landings etc), but likely include a bunch of other fixes and tweaks.

I sort of had the feeling from early on that i should hold off on getting into the game fully (even though i'm a kickstarter backer, so have had access for a longtime now!), and so far have just been playing the offline training missions, practicing FAO flying etc.

The thing is what ED has mostly done for my gaming is get me back into FFED3D, Privateer, Independence War etc. And between all those i'm 'good' in terms of space flight simness. I still feel i should not even get started on ED yet, as it clearly is not as fully formed as it can be, and for my gaming requirements as a long time Elite fan, it needs to be. So i can wait for the moment.

Frontier have been around for a while, Elite is a personal thing for David, so i'm sure they know what they need to do to keep this franchise trucking, we just need to give them time.

Game needs time ... lots maybe ;)

I dont have the urge to race home after work to play anymore. So I'm slowly arriving at the point the OP's at .. sadly.

I can only agree with the OP. Being an alpha-backer I haven't really felt the urge to play pretty much since E-D was released...
Let's all hope it get's better. I have uninstalled the game for now, but I'll keep to visit the forums from time to time. Maybe E-D matures like good wine. ;-) Maybe it even get's offline-mode some day. (Let me dream a bit ...)

Totally agree with OP. I'm feeling the same. Except I don't need a goal, I just need content and balancing between roles.
Ok, traders are, by definition, rich, but...
I'm watching your posts (everyone here), and many of you are playing another game waiting ED to be ready... But ED is supposed to be ready...
The game release should have been delayed for a year at least...

Mr. Braben had over 30 years to think about how will be the next step of this game, i think its time that he take the game again in his own hand and not give all the power to a executive producer, give your fans new toys to play, dont take toys away if you dont add new toys or make them weak, make the game fun to play and not to realistic.
I m a long time fan, i have all original boxed elite games in my cupboard, i m very impressed what frontier did in this short time but like others think, its not the 80s. this game deserve more, but me an a lot of people need to learn to have patience, rome wasn't built in one day.

Been on board since the KS and playing since PB. Still enjoying it as much as I was at PB. Mind you I love space and I play at my own pace with limited time available. I cannot see myself being bored any time soon. The key is limited time and I dont need the MMO side.

You give it "time" guys seem to forget that this is a business, not a fanproject for fun. There will be no "time" when this fails right now, they will just make the business decision to can it and develop more profitable stuff instead.

This is a point that can't be stressed enough. Of course FD will always say that they love the game and will keep developing it, it would be stupid to say otherwise.

But in reality they will evaluate constantly if it's still a good choice to keep pouring money into it. Once they decide that no more profits are to be expected they will pull the plug.

And the way things are shaping up lately this moment might come much sooner as any of those saying "just give it time, in a year we will see an entirely different game" are willing to believe.

Here is a link to make my point:

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=elite dangerous, star citizen&cmpt=q&tz=

By announcing the release they generated some interest, which is rapidly declining since then. (I just added Star Citizen as a comparable project to give some perspective. If you want further perspective, just add something like World of Warcraft or Call of Duty to the chart...)
