It's a term that has been diluted over the years though, I'll give you that.
Minecraft spoiled no one, it's just that it actually is a sandbox.
I can 'move freely around the map' in iRacing, or WoW, is that a sandbox now?

You can create in a sandbox, you can't create anything in ED.
I said the same thing, but then I googled it, and I changed my position.

The problem is 'IT IS A SANDBOX' has been used as an excuse by fans of empty games for so long now that some people think that they are right lol

Exactly ... Theme Park (for example) is a sandbox ... ED is an open world game (like Grand Theft Auto, for example) ... 'least, that's how I see things
Are you guys that are feeling lost and at the end of your road just playing elite and nothing else?
Buying a game isn't a marriage contract. There is no enforced monogamy. I fool around and play the field quite a bit, I have 4 or 5 games on the go at any one time. i start one or two new games a year so my top four are always changing. Its even easier with games with no monthly subs to worry about. Playing the game only occasionally after your first binge doesn't diminish the value of what you have and ED will always be waiting for you.
I don't think ED is intended to be a second life or job.

It's not hard is it? Ignoring what anyone else ever says about this all you have to do is think of a real sandbox and the definition kind of comes to you ha ha. No Googling required really.

The fans, well they are correct, but its bittersweet. Its not a good sandbox, as sandboxes compare, offering for offering. So its fair.
You may even learn, as I did, Elite was the genesis of sandboxes.

Typically, what people use for a definition is some sand, and a box. We have a box, and no sand. There is no sand in Elite: Dangerous. Not one grain.

Well BigDaddio, I'm guessing the reason might be that they are hoping (if enough people complain) one of the FD developers will respond with something to reassure the community not to panic but good times are indeed on the horizon (in the form of more varied missions, storylines, sub quests etc). It's the quietude and lack of feedback that seems to be upsetting some players...
Personally, I haven't played enough hrs yet to get to the point many have with burnout.
Ultima I (1981) - You could freely chose to go anywhere, even to space; you could rob towns, explore dungeons etc. So by your definition Ultima was the genesis of sandboxes.
Claiming Elite Dangerous is in the same league as Minecraft or Lego...wow. The only way I could see your post as anything but either duplicity or just dellusion is if Minecraft or Lego only gave you two blocks to chose from and limited you a 3x3x3 area and forced you to build in a diagonal.
