Just tried my first 3.03 skimmer mission

I don't understand the OP's point.

I've made a good bit of coin and have received a great deal of satisfaction from skimmer missions over the past year, and have never killed them in a ship. I've only ever used the SRV, and always by landing away from the compound and dismissing my ship before driving in (I always assumed that it would be tresspassing either way).

The worst that would happen is that security defense would show up, and despite running for nearlt an hour a few times, one can't escape them in the SRV. A couple of times I was able to land my ship, dock, and get away or take them out, but I usually just had to self destruct.

Though exciting and challenging at times, (especially high security bases), they were always doable.

It sounds like the complaint is that the experience is no different than what I've always known it to be, and this is ruining things.

I guess if one only knew skimmer missions as "massacre them with missiles from the FDL" then yeah, I guess one would actually have to play the game as intended now.

Agreed 100%

Tried my first ever skimmer mission last night to see if you really do need to use the SRV. I had an SRV on my ship, but never even needed to land and deploy it. Seems if there's a Goliath at the base, skimmer will spawn with it and you don't need to deploy the SRV for this to happen.

Video below starts just after I finished the glide and dropped to under 100 metres with my ship

I just tried skimmer missions after the update and had a ball!

Played cat and mouse with turrets, goliaths and skimmers, ended up with 50% hull on SRV, 50% hull on ship, had to synthesize ammo, but completed 3 parallel skimmer missions for 3 different factions.

Awesomely satisfying... well done FDev!

People: you have always had the option to complete the skimmer missions with the SRV, and it is far more exciting and engaging than just firing missiles at the ground.

It can get hairy at times, but it isn't anything approaching the difficulty of PvP combat or anything.

Your opinion. It's not my opinion.

Srv combat is so much fun u are a go-kart with a machine gun and you shoot the skimmers a few times and they die then shoot the next one and so on forever maybe 1000 skimmers.

My favorite part about SRV combat is all the customization options for the SRV

Hiya ,

While I get that you like using the SRV, I just don't. I particularly don't like the turret and especially don't like trying to drive while in the turret.

What customizations are you referring to? Paint jobs?

If they can't be done from the air, I won't be touching these again. The base defenses weren't ever trivial at med sec and higher. You had a patrolling ship to deal with, then you had a couple of turrets and power plant, then you could go to town on the skimmers. With new CnP you had to be careful how many of these you did and to where. It was perfect. The problem was just undefended bases were too easy. Durely the better solution would have been not to generate mission to zero sec bases? I'm very disappointed
This patxh has been such a rollercoaster (no reference intended to the other side of FDs business), I'm like Yay! Good job! Then I'm like, wait, whut? then I'm like Yay! Then I'm like omg, what have they done now? Then I'm like YAy1!!1!

Mercy.

Smile Aashenfox, you do make me smile! :p

I agree with you but when have you ever known FDev's approach to 'fixing a problem' ever be the path of least resistance. They get an idea in their head that a certain type of mission should be done a certain way of way and when the community comes up with a completely different approach to the mission type (that FDev don't like), they bend it all out of shape trying to force the behaviour that they want you to do. I wish FDev would just learn to go with the flow a little more as you suggested.

It is quite clear FD didn't want to go 'only SRV hurt them' route. Idea is that you have to use SRV at least to lure them out - thus fulfilling FD idea of players trying out SRV combat at least for few minutes completely :)

That's another success for 3.0.

What? You and me have a completely different opinion on this and viewpoint of FDev I see. How have the changes been in anyway a success for 3.0? I like much of 3.0.x but a lot of the changes have been about screwing with game mechanics because FDev's dislike for what players are doing with their game. Instead of providing a play ground and letting players decide how they want to interact with it. FDev have to try and force their vision onto everything. It gets old quickly.

Attempted a skimmer mission for the first time.

Unmitigated, unparallelled disaster.
Lost my FAS. Never even made visual contact with the base.
A squad of Navy Fighters hit me with corrosive weapons, and the hull melted.
Surrendered that mission. Took the rep hit cheerfully.

Shan't be returning to that.

I remember the days when I ranked to King in empire doing scan and skimmer missions. used dumbfires to take out turrets, nose dived the skimmers enjoying the flash of blue shields to shields collision... then once everything had been whacked, land ship on site, SRV my way through the scanner tasks.

THAT was fun. If I had to do it all in an SRV? Don't think I would have bothered. I can just about muddle my way through the controls of the SRV collecting materials for synthesis from rocks.

Out of curiosity... if in a wing, can someone go in with an SRV to provoke a response, and someone above litter the place in dumbfires removing any / and all threats?

Having done several dozen of these now... some bases are a cakewalk, some are quite difficult. Short version though, for *that one location* in the universe... FD haven't fixed^ it at all.

^For some meaning of the word "fix"
