Lack of twist stick

I have a question to people with HOTAS setups that have no twist sticks to use for jaw or roll whatever your preference is. :)
How do you get around that in Elite?
Do you have a pedal setup? Are pedals a must?
Can you fly just as well without the pedals or are you disadvantaged by not having that extra degrees of movement?

The Warthog and some other setup's dont have twist, depend on rudder pedals for that.

I use the X52 Pro - and find twist very useful. I have pedals too - but in all honesty I forget about them most of the time :(

I use a HOTAS Warthog and pedals for yaw. I wouldn't call pedals as such a must for ED but using yaw will give you the little nudge you need with non-gimballed guns.

Well the twist comes natural I think the joystick I had years ago must have had it, very useful.

I have yet to pilot an aircraft that has a twist rudder. :D

But yes, you have to use pedals. Unless you use a keyboard for throttle etc. You use yaw a lot in this game.

I prefer twist joysticks personally. I can't be doing with sitting bolt upright in my chair for hours on end to reach pedals. ;)

I went from a "twist" setup (two Thrustmasters T16000m) to a traditional HOTAS with pedals (CH Products).

My experience is that yaw on twist is very easy to use, you learn to mix it in the pitch and roll mix in no time. I had a much harder time getting there with the pedals, the learning curve is much steeper. However, once you "get" it, I find it much more precise.

The problem with twist is that it's very hard to roll without twisting a little the joystick, and also that you probably have an easier time twisting in one direction than in the other (more strain on the hand when you twist your right hand toward the right than toward the left).

I have an X52Pro with twist but I have it locked out and to be extra sure the axis completely dead zoned out. After years of flight simming pedals are the the only way.

After reading this I wonder if I'm the only person in the world that hates the stick twist set to yaw rather than roll...

Yes I know if comes from flight sims and works better in them, but for ED it makes more sense in my head to throw myself into a roll, not a yaw.

Me too. But use a thumb hat on the stick. (The countermeasure switch on the warthog fwiw). This is less than ideal in my flight sim of choice (RoF) but works very well in Elite due to the low rate of maximum yaw.

Theres alot more information about it in this thread too if you want to read through it...

I don't like roll into yaw, it messes with what I think should be happening when I roll.

The ECM switch, for me, is the menu navigation one (press to select) and the thumb POV hat for yaw, plus thrust up and down. The index finger POV hat on the throttle is for thrust in all directions. POV had on the throttle I use for headlook.

I've been using pedals for many years and can't imagine flying any other way :)

Also, I hate twist rudder :)

I also don't get on with twist rudder. Don't have the space for pedals at the moment but will pick some up when I move house in a couple of months. Looking forward to it. Until then here is my setup that works great for Elite.

I've successfully used the thumb hat on the throttle of a warthog. Worked fine.

However, I missed the twist ultimately, so have an x55 too.

I'm selling an X65f in the hardware section if interested in a twist, force sensing stick.

Looks like it is a mixed bag of what people prefer to use.
I've tried to get used to the no twist stick but I just can not. Twisting the stick to jaw comes naturally.

I was wondering about the Thrustmaster T16000m sensors. Everyone is saying they are very accurate but are the same sensors used for twist rudder on that joystick? I'm asking because I'm after best precision for twist. I have Thrustmaster Hotas X but the precision of twist rudder is not sufficient for me.
