Ok that makes sense, that is why I asked, I noticed that no one really talks about the online version of the game being all that great, most talk about playing in single player or coop mode and I noticed all the videos on youtube didn't have anyone around but npc's.
To bad it looked so good...Thank you for your help.
First the galaxy is big and to quote one of my favourite books.
"Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mindbogglingly big it is. I mean you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space."
Over 400 billion star systems to explore and be in. I can play for days on end in the bubble ( populated space) and not see a single soul in open play. It is true that the instances on how the game operates only allows 30 players in one instant ( if I am wrong on this please correct me), but this shouldn't stop people working towards the same goals. This is how the background simulation works, even for people in solo or group mode that background simulation is still running. So say for example my connection is a bit y one night I can still play the game in solo and still effect the galaxy, so when I do return to open play which is 99% of the time I haven't lost any of the work I put in.
If your guild uses a popular VOIP program then working together is going to easy. Wings are a max size of 4 per wing though as Elite is not really designed with huge guilds/corps as it is meant to be a game about the individual surviving in the galaxy. Eve Online although a really nice game is vastly different from this as its focus is on the huge corps and players controlling huge swathes of space. Something which is not possible in Elite thankfully. After playing a long time in Eve Online I vowed never to return to the game because it didn't cater for my needs. When Elite Dangerous was kickstarted I was over the moon ( no pun intended.) Because this was the game for me who enjoys the single player experience of exploration and small groups over the 1000 man fleets I had been flying in.
Players can't own territories in space, sure they can try but it never actually holds. Most you can do is get your own faction into a system like some of the player groups have done. But you as a player won't get anything out of it such as money, all there would be was the satisfaction of having a name you choose in the game.
In time we may ( I really hope) see player owned bases which was mentioned in the developer diaries which would be destructible. First though the game needs to add a few more things before this is possible. We are on the 3rd year of the game so far and a lot has been added, soon we are going to get multicrew ships which means potentially you could have 16 people working together in a wing. 4 players in each ship.
Forget the nay sayers make up your own mind. Buy the base game and give it a try, if you get stuck there are plenty of people on the forums who are willing to help with advice or videos giving tutorials on how things work. Remember Eve Online no publisher wanted that game and now look at what it has achieved, I was there in Eve on release day when we had only mining and the largest ships in the game were battleships and no POS. Over the past decade of release the game has grown with more content and I think Elite will do the same.
Elite Dangerous is a niche game as well as Eve Online.
