Legacy is default on Epic Games

So, i grabbed ED through the Epic store at some point when it was free, but never used that account as i have a steam version of the game.

Got a little bored and wanted to experience fresh start and go through the progression again. So i download the game through Epic...but it only installs the legacy version by default? The launcher even warns me that im about to play Legacy....but then why is it the default? I imagine new players might not even realize they are not playing the most up to date version. Seem to me like some sort of oversight. I think the live version should be shipped with the regular install of the game.

Only tangibly related....downloading the Live version through the launcher is also incredibly slow. Not sure what is going on there, if its an issue with the launcher of Frontiers content servers.

Id say you purchased the game on Epic back when it was only Elite Dangerous and didn't include the DLC? this is now renamed to legacy and requires you to purchase Odyssey through Epic games to play the most updated version with the DLC included

I can't say anything about download speeds, but yes - it's a known issue with Epic, and only Epic for some reason - that it'll default to Legacy first. Sounds like you already got the "Live" part sorted out.

The engine/version itself is the same, just without the ability to do certain Odyssey-related things without owning the DLC. Like space legs, landing on some planets, or accessing any ground-based installation that's "blue" in the system map. (That is, orange things you can land at, blue things you can't - and usually have names like a corporation, Earl's Science Frontier, or St. Smithens Medical Facility. Those are Odyssey settlements.)

Maybe Epic doesn't agree with the given minimum system requirements being sufficient for the Live version. They don't want people immediately requesting a refund so they default to the version of the game that is more likely to give decent performance.

I thought they already fixed this problem, but apparently not?

It has been a problem for as long as the legacy/live split was done, and it's quite a nasty one. That's because people who use the Epic store to buy and try the game are automatically sent to legacy mode, as people who know nothing about the game they are none the wiser, they might like the game and play dozens of hours, purchase and upgrade their ships and so on... only to find out at one point about the legacy/live thing, and that they have been playing the wrong mode all this time and, what's worst, if they want to play the live version they'll have to start from scratch because there's no way to transfer anything from one mode to the other.

I wouldn't be surprised if there exists a substantial number of people who have stopped playing the game because of exactly this situation.

Thats exactly my point. Who would think that when they download their new game, they then have to do another download because the developers shipped an old version of their game, instead of the most obvious choice.

Epic installed EDO fine and is playing in Live here without changes
The question is not whether you can download and play Odyssey using the Epic store. It's that for the longest time the default was to download and launch the legacy version and, apparently, still is.

i would have thought once the launcher package is first installed if odyssey is selected as the first download the that would be the default
however if legacy is inatalled first then that would be?

does it default to legacy even if it isnt installed?
if so yea that is a bit of a pain to have to select horizons instead every time you start
for me odyssey is default
