Let's Talk About The FDL...

Not quite on topic but sort of:

Bounty Hunting dosent really exist in ED. For me it would be about going after a single bounty thats worth a lot of cash. What we have in ED is Bounty Farming. Its not worth scanning around in SC unless its a mission, or jumping system to system....Its about finding a HazRez and just farming it. I think the FDL is fine for this.

The tank and jump range might be low but it still gets you to the farming locations, its not a bad compromise. Look at the Clipper, decent jump range and fuel tank amazing speed, but garbage shields.

I do hope FD implement an NPC (and PvP) bounty board, with really well paid bounties, and extremely hard AI at the top end, so we can hunt them, but it's also worth the effort, like several million per kill.

a FDL with a class 5 fsd would end with 60 ly max jumprange in a typical exploration build: https://eddp.co/u/ksQSsTRF

Typical exploration build? Aren't those usually able to do more than 1 jump before running out of fuel?

Class 5 FSD uses 5T per max jump. And the FDL only has an 8T fuel tank. That seems like plenty limitation to keep the FDL as a patrolling and hunting vehicle, and not a buckyballing champ. Even with a scoop filter, there won't be much room for error as you are forced to scoop each jump and replot if you fall behind.

i should have said: a class 5 fsd and a class 4 fueltank, as outlined in the OP. see link to build ;-)

That FDL has my proposed 16t fuel tank, so it's still only 3 jumps. Lol

No more buffs for the FDL please, it was already made grossly OP the last time it was tweaked... I'd like to see it nerfed back to its original setup personally (C5 powerplant, less agility).

Did you read my OP? :p

It does go back to the C5 PP.
The C5 FSD (and necessary C4 fuel tank) are to bring it in line with its bounty hunting role.
The added mass would also have an effect on the handling.

You'd also face quite bad heat issues with a grade 5 DD, and grade 5 overcharged PP to power all the usual tools...

It's a rebalance, not a buff.

My only thought: They would first have to introduce a long range bounty hunting mechanic
(I have no idea about the FdL.)

Thing is by the time you spend 100+ mil on a ship that isn't a Corvette, it is probably your main or only ship. Bounty Hunting is not actually about staying in system either. IRL Bounty Hunters often live on the road.

But maybe that's what a "luxury" bounty hunter is.... I mean its not claiming to be an "efficient" bounty hunter is it? Sports Cars are fun to drive but not going to get you very far either.

But then, sportscars have drastically increased performance in all other areas and the FDL doesn't really seem to except with raw firepower numbers. There are lots of ships faster and almost all ships are more maneuverable, not what I would expect when I think of a high end combat (yeah bounty hunting is a combat role) ship. Shields are mediocre at best, your optional slots are a joke which would be fine except popping an SCB to feed your already crap shields boils you like an egg and you can't carry enough of them, and if you carry enough HRP/MRPs you make the paper hull buy you enough time to boost away in a pinch, it moves like a pregnant moose. Engineering can help a lot of this, but not with any basic engineers or basic rolls.

Basically what I'm getting at is that the FDL is crap stock even in PVE but crazy when engineered and that is sort of a bummer. (Basically flight model differences aside there is a much better pro/con list for the Vulture, FAS, and Python in this price tier or under for either a main ship or a system fighter/transfer build)

Also, when referring to ship "balancing" it really only applies to pvp scenarios, so putting an 8A FSD in the FDL wouldn't make it "broken" for all I care. Even if it jumped 80LYs a hop its still only has 4 optional slots besides shield, so you can't actually multi-role it so who cares?

I think they need to make the stock FDL better, without raising any of the maximum caps when engineered. How they would do that, I don't know

Seriously, this. Most folks are so slow at buckyballing that I can beat their 50LY Anacondas with my FDL. And I'd be "OK" with having to jump 3 times for each of there's IFF there was an actual tracking mechanic.

That being said, if there was a tracking mechanic, then the FDL as a hunter ship would be pretty abysmal. Horrible SC agility for interdiction positioning, and anchor weight jump range would make it the laughing stock of the galaxy.

"Tracking Limpet Deployed!"

Must've missed that, then we are in agreement...

Yay! Lol

But like I said, I'd be happy if my proposal was actually a MkII, or other variant of the original FDL.
Then you'd have a killer FDL, but with crap range. Or the long range hunter, but with crap heat management, and slightly reduced speed and handling.

I'd probably increase its default hull mass slightly too, because the reduced power plant class would save some of mass of the increased FSD and fuel tank size.

My problem with the FDL isn't its HP or DPS, its the manoeuvrability.

A well-flown FDL will out-knife-fight an FAS easily by spamming boost. As is, its the best mid-range brawler and best mid-range sniper.

If range is your issue with the FdL, just ditch a HRP/MRP and bung in an external fuel tank instead.

Beyond that, it's just a case of waiting for FDev to come up with a good reason to compel people to actually do that.
BHing missions where the target actually rabbits and forces you to pursue them across systems?

I actually keep my FDL as travel capable as possible, it doesn't have any armour (but really good shields), and either has a fuel scoop or fuel tank in one of the class 4 slots.
It's still not particularly good at travel though. Lol

And if we did ever have true bounty hunting mechanics in the game, I'd probably still use my Python for its superior range and endurance.

My Courier jumps 30LY, boosts 600, and 50%+ resists across the board and still has a KWS and 8t of cargo, that'd be my "chase you across the bubble" Bounty Hunter

Thinking about it, I suppose any pursuit is always going to be a bit hit & miss.

I mean, if your target is in a ship that can jump further than you, you're probably going to be SOL regardless of fuel capacity.

I guess it'd be up to FDev to ensure that a fleeing target only ever jumped to the nearest system which, unless you were still in a stock Sidey, probably means you'd be able to pursue in whatever ship you prefer.
Which would be good news for FdL/Vulture jockeys.

A maneuverability due to charge enhance PD with over +40% secondaries and full faoff which dictates k/m flying to avoid the stalling outside blue zone so its a more complex problem , it even more pronounced by the fact FAS best piloting is achieved by mix faon-off so fdl capitalize a problem of how the faoff model is programed in the flight model and from there to the wpn system called fdl

We need deeper corrections to flight mechanics im afraid

Err.... I understood some of that but not all of it, but I'd say my experience has always been 100% the opposite. In mine, it takes an extremely skilled FDL pilot to outmaneuver an average/slightly above average FAS pilot just because it is much more maneuverable to start with while being the same relative speed as the FDL. Though max engineered PVP ship wise this might be a bit different nowadays I suppose. The FAS to me has always felt like a Super Vulture, and honestly when I read the FDL description etc (back before the FAS was released actually) I was really expecting it to perform the way the FAS did when it came along later.
