Level up bonuses

I believe I said... "I'm not talking about magically making your ship stronger" etc.

oh never mind.

You put the disclaimer in but that is exactly what you are talking about.

What is magic in this context? Magic is the ability to do something without any logical machination-based input, or a physical advantage conferred by means which are non-corporeal.

For example;

1. Non magical scenario Ship A and Ship B have identical weights. Ship A moves faster than Ship B because it has a more powerful engine, but Ship B can travel twice as far because it has a more efficient engine.

2. Magical scenario Ship A and Ship B have identical weights. Ship A moves faster than Ship B because the pilot of Ship A is "using the force", but Ship B can travel twice as far because the pilot of Ship B eats more lemons.

See the difference? In the non-magical scenario there was a clear link that, in the logical context of the mechanics of the universe we are discussing, can be established between the cause and effect. In the magical scenario there is no such link. Now let's look at your own idea....

Ship A can travel further than Ship B for the same amount of fuel. Both ships have the same weight, power consumption, speed, and are otherwise identical in every way except one. The pilot in Ship A has been given an arbitary rank by the pilots federation.

What your opening post says, basically, is "I am not talking about magically making your ship stronger, I am just talking about using magic to make your ship stronger!"

Rewards for progression are common in many games, and are a fundamental mistake. From gear progression to character levels they hide the fact that the a player does the same thing the day they sit down for the first time to the day they finally walk away. And the mistake is that they make the game easier as the player progresses, meaning that the game starts hard and finishes easy.

I prefer depth in the game, where all of the tools are present and you can learn skills at your own pace. In Elite's case this means loadouts, pip management, module priorities, tactical positioning, FA off, and the like. No "you fought 100 ship so suddenly find yourself with better shields": if you've fought enough (and paid attention) then you gain ability yourself without the game having to compensate for it.

Never and no! Not what Elite has ever been about and hopefully never will be about. You mention Fallout 3 and I love that game and Bethesda's other games like Skyrim etc, skills and level ups work in those games. Elite isn't like that! You can't compare Elite Dangerous to Fallout 3 , both great but not comparable.

No offense to the OP, I'm sure it was written with good intentions, but this is not the way to make elite better.

It will turn it into essentially another run of the mill mmo, and it will kill the spirit of the game.

There should be no artificial bonuses for those who play longer than others.

The skill and experience in this game is all your own, there are no false "level up" powers you can gain which is what makes this game so much better than the others. Anyone can be a god when they reach level xx with all those bonuses added but to reach Elite status in this game means that you did it ALL yourself, using your own skill and expertise, which is the achievement itself.

When you've done it, try again but use a Viper or Cobra without going to any larger and more powerful ships next time. Your "level up" bonus right now is that you can afford the next ship that offers better fire power and can take more punishment. However, in the wrong hands, (lack of skill and expertise), it can still be taken out by someone in a smaller and less powerful ship. I would hate for this game to turn into one of those types of games where the top ship in the game is an instant "I Win" button for even the most unskilled of players, (Eve comes to mind here with the Carriers and their fighter contingents and Dreads in siege mode).

While I understand why some might want Steam achievements, I'm not keen on the idea. I could live with Steam achievements that have no in-game impacts though, just don't want to see things like 'you've docked 500 times, you can now have an extra 5 mins docking time' or 'you've flown 1000 LY, your experience now enables you to fly more efficiently and your fuel usage rate is reduced by x'. Want none of that thanks.

I would imagine that faction rank and trade-/combat-/ explorerank should open the path to better paid missions or special equipment (security/ military class).

That would be easy to implement and not disballancing.
You may see this soon it the chatter is true.

Someone thinks ED is an RPG...

What level are you now?
How many XP did you get for that Elite Anaconda?
How many HP did it have?
Did your healer keep you up while the tank kept it busy so you could DPS is down?
Did it drop any good loot? Epics? Legendaries? Crafting mats?

I think you have your genres confused.

You know... in the old days. Buying a game meant you liked the idea enough to buy and play.

Once you bought it, you played it and either enjoyed it or didnt.

Sometimes you would hang on for updates and fixes if the game was reasonably playable or had greater potential. But generally you were smart enough to realise what could or couldn't be done, what should be done and what might be done and what just does not fit with the game you originally bought.

If the game didnt meet your expectations, you played for 7 days straight and got bored after accomplishing all there that there is; reached the endgame, have all the phat loot and a bank full of coin, maxed out characters or equipment; just plain old 'finished' the game: What happened next?

You went and bought another game!!!

Now dont get me wrong, Im not an ED fanboy, I want to see some fixes and some changes and watch the game mature and there are a great many suggestions on these forums.

The ideas I agree with are those that fit with the original vision and within the technical limitations of the game that can push the boundaries as much as possible. The caveat is I do not want to see the game changed so that it is unrecognizable from its original vision.

If you want a sci fi setting rpg with character stats, experience, skills, powers, feats... Go and play Mass Effect.

If you want a sci fi setting that relies on YOUR skills (as in the original vision of the game), to fly, to fight, to trade, to dodge between binary star systems, to wear a cowboy hat and sparkly G string and play guitar while flying to Hutton Orbital...
come and play Elite:Dangerous.

Which part dont you understand?

Seriously... next people will be suggesting zombie infested space stations where your only defence is gathering horticultural resources and fighting endless hordes of undead with a giant sunflower that spits poo.

No offence kid. But if this was a forum for indy kickstarter developers throwing around ideas for a brand new game - Its a great idea!

But its not.

'If you cant fly and you cant shoot, xxxx off back to the bar and go back to playing Space Invaders.'

I getting increasingly concerned that there are two different games called Elite: Dangerous and I'm, mistakenly, in the forums for the other one.

Guilds, level-up bonuses, maybe Tamagotchi dashboard pets that increase your hit points the longer they live...

Well to be fair, a Tamagotchi pet would be a good use for our crotchscreens.

Just napped for a few minutes and had a nightmare I was playing and on the right of the HUD words were appearing.
6X COMBO................AWESOME..............
BONUS STAGE.
Gotta take a break and find my Captain Morgan rum.

No artificial skills please. I like the fact that the game rewards you for being a better pilot, not only for the amount of time you played.

I could see some level-based content though (missions, ship parts, discounts, decals, etc). It could be like a reputation thing.
