No, all pc beta's are run on seperate servers and progress isn't transfered back to your proper game.

That's true according to my recollection. I basically bit FDevs hand off when it became available and the CQC beta news came as a surprise to me later.

I am sure it has been answered already but I am feeling lazy today. Is it possible to start beta via steam or do I need to download a separate launcher?

From what I understand, the beta access is 'attached' to your account and will be visible as a separate 'launch' in the existing launcher.
iirc you will be prompted to download a new launcher when the beta goes live that has the option to launch the main game and beta

I too bought the lifetime thing but certainly wouldn't want in game discounts. Don't want pay to win or any part of it.

There are a number of ingame discounts, but none of them tied to the lifetime expansion pass.

If you use Beta servers all ships and equipment cost minimal credits to allow for testing but that won't affect your main save. Obviously using the beta access just to mess around with ships you can't afford in the main game is a bit frowned upon by some people but if you assist with testing/balance and bug reporting on the beta forums then I can't see many having objections
Beta servers, however, only appear as an option in the launcher during testing cycles just before launches.
On the main save the Founders world was the kickstarter rewards not a lifetime/beta reward as Mephane said. However, since the powerplay discount is 15% the Founders world 10% is only really useful for finding all modules in one place...
well with any forte ED will have some 10 years of development still to go (ok maybe 9 ;p) so that would amount to you play the odd beta test. at least one for every season (year)

for example: the beta for update 1.4-CQC will begin around August 31, only beta access members will be able to explore this update first & provide feedback regarding major bugs which the devs will try to fix before full release of the update to everyone else.
there is supposedly supposed to be one more update 1.5-ships prior to horizons... They will have a beta period for that... And then the beta period for horizons.
The LEP is linked to your login... When the beta period begins, you will be prompted after login to download a new server connection package that will give you access to the beta.
