The difference will be that the Steam version patches an order of magnitude quicker than the FD launcher - their CDN has much bigger pipes. Installing the game through Steam took ten minutes; installing CQC took upwards of forty, because it's not on the Steam servers yet.

I installed 1.4 launching via steam with 15mb/s.
I installed it through the Steam installation too, but the update took 40 minutes.
Installing the base game through Steam took 5. Games usually download for me through Steam at around 500mbps

Lifetime Expansion pass offer not long enough
For those of you that have in the last week been in the Elite Dangerous store you will have noticed there is a lifetime expansion that expires on the 14th of this month which is less than a week away.... now i understand that to most people the lifetime pass would be very accessible if there was more time to save up the cash but unfortunately there isn't so this is a petition to keep the lifetime expansion pass offer open for a month or two instead of just over a week or if not possible to have it come up for at least a week with every expansion.

I think they should make it available till 1.5 or longer. It's an ok deal, better deal if we think that the price of seasons will only go up over 10 yrs. And it will hurt to pay the last couple of seasons knowing the game/support is about to end.
Standard marketing approach. Do something to introduce a scarcity value, and people who were wavering will jump in.
Hell, they have offered these before and then said they were removing them forever (a bit like those limited time skins that came back). I notice they have not said that this time, so we can be pretty sure that they will be offered again.
Nevertheless, people who want it, but cannot afford it now have my sympathy.

I'd like it at every expansion because knowing there will be one every expansion will allow me to save up for it; it may be ~130GBP which might not be a lot in the UK and elsewhere (I'm not sure), but down here in South Africa that's close to ZAR2800 which is a lot of money for us. I'd like an expansion pass, but I need time to save up for it. xD
I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of the people voting 'Not at all' - it is because you feel that FD will make less money this way or are there other reasons?
This. My best guess would be they do it at every new expansion.
The reason why I am not buying is that there is not the slightest hint about what they intend to do at all. I mean, seriously, 175 Euros, and NOTHING about what you're going to get? I've driven cars that cost less than that.
For all we know, they extend the game maybe 1 or 2 years with incremental updates that are mostly free. I wouldn't have paid for wings but skipped them, same with CQC, same with planetary landings, same with powers (here, have another alley to grind down!). I'd be willing to pay a monthly fee for the servers and ongoing development, but I'm definitely not dropping 175 Euros on two or three expansions I'm probably not interested in anyway. I'd rather invest in them fixing the main game's multiplayer aspect and get rid of the stutters.
EDIT: Contrast this 175 EUR "lifetime pass" with no info with Battlefield Premium that had a EUR 50 price tag and a clear roadmap (with timings!) of five paid extensions plus (admittedly worthless) digital content like tactical guides, additional in-game gear and customization options. They even already added two major game overhaul patches plus an additional free extension for a two-year old game in a franchise that usually only updates the current of the annual "new" releases.

If the lifetime is proposed each season, in 4-5 years, it will not be the pass of expansion, but the pass of retroaction
I would have to buy four or five expansions before the LEP was a deal. If the game lasts that long with more than 4 or 5 expansions I'll be happy to spend the extra. Even though I can afford it, I'm not willing to hand over 220 dollars Canadian on a promise with no roadmap or even a gameplay video 3 months before release of the first. To each their own.
What he said - I bought the pass on the 6th August, just over a month ago. So it's been available for at least a month already.

OMG do you not see this from the side of the seller? You'd not make it in business is all that can be said.
Just remember the lifetime expansion pass is not your lifetime but the lifetime FD choose to give to the game before they release Elite Deadly which could be ten years away or could be five years away. There are no guarantees only stated wishes, but that is not a guarantee.
