As for the OP, it depends on what FD goals are, I dont watch the streams, but if its just about the game, does it matter what mode he is in if it is just to show the game, the pnly differance open has over any other is open world pvp.
Today viewers im going to do some mineing ...does it matter if he is in open or not...today im going to do some smuggling...again does the mode matter ...if he was to show pvp then yeah open or a PG with other pvpers would be my choice of mode-
I don't think folks have clocked on to what I was actually doing, so I'll spell it out
I totally agree with the responses I've been getting.
What I'm actually saying, is that Frontier have designed a game for which there are zero consequences for attacking other players. Yet, they market the game, and have been trying to promote the Open mode for years, now, and even have the phrase "Or just hunt other commanders" in said marketing, without having done much if anything to bring consequences into the game for aberrant/criminal behaviour.
Therefore, in my opinion, if Frontier want to market the game, and stream in Open, and all they get in return is a paddlin' , this should really encourage them to hurry up and start getting some semblance of consequences into the game.

As a matter of fact, I think it is good that Ed gets repeatedly killed while streaming. His "haha that was great" kind of replies after the fact are PR -- the job he's paid to do. But it's pretty damn clear that he and the other Devs hate it when it happens live (as anyone would).
The groups responsible for the sniping are demonstrating just how profoundly dumb they are: they spend their time complaining how FDev does not listen to their legitimate complaints about combat -- how it only caters to "carebears" -- and then time and again shoot themselves in the foot by showing to the very same people who are supposed to help them the petty kids that they actually are. It's really fun to see them gloat, while all they are doing is making sure that the game will grow in the exact opposite direction from the one they want.

It does seem that exploiters, cheaters and those who harass other players can get away with it, without any fear of real sanction. If there was, behaviours would change
Ed's comment on Reddit will have the effect of making it "open season" on streamers who play in open.
It's like a parent who you see going to a kid "If you do this again you'll get no tv". Kid does it. and then "If you do this again you'll get no tv". Kid does it. and so on and so on until kid does something funny and parent just laughs at it.
Said kid has zero respect for the parent, because past experience has shown the parent will do naff all so said kid then proceeds to terrorise the street.

You appear confused, and think that Ed will choose to to be tutored by the same stream-harassers, instead of other CMDRs from the pool of hundreds of PvPers. Which part of "So it's up to FDev to take action against those CMDRs breaching the policy" would you like explaining?
Asymmetric PvP != Harassment.
And all it would take would be expanding bannable offences to cover stream sniping. They could remove problematic players from the ecosystem live on stream
So because someone decided to stream in Open Play they are immune to being attacked? this would make no sense, I stream all the time in Open in CGs I have zero issues... sure its annoying but that comes with being in Open Play. To say that frontier should use their policy to remove legitimate game play options from the game is a little silly...

The game should be played in open. This is where Frontier want the game to be played.
However, Solo and Private group are there primarily to allow Commanders to avoid unwarranted disruptions.
As a PR exercise for how good Elite Dangerous is (and why everyone should buy / play / enjoy it), the constant ganking is more likely to turn new players away than attract them.
I accept that the majority of players in open do not get ganked and have a wonderfully enjoyable experience, stumbling over other commanders at stations and pleasantly interacting with them.
However, because the stream is advertising where Ed is going, petty minded individuals think that it is funny to first interdict, and then second destroy, Ed on a stream. This is giving a false representation of 'normal' life.
For this reason, I can only really see Ed having two options:
1) A timeslip stream. Broadcast with a time delay so that people can't work out where Ed is in real time.
2) A non Open stream. Take unwarranted gankers out of the equation.
I don't think 1) is viable due to both technical and interactive constraints which leaves 2) as the only sensible change if the issue needs to be addressed.
Ed streaming from a generic Frontier account is one thing, there is only really a passing investment in the account and the developers could always edit money, loadout, location etc using hand-wavium without too many people crying foul.
But recently Ed has been trying to build up his own PS4 commander, on his own login, to collect his own trophies. I believe that this is what resulted in the very despondent looking Ed at the end of the last stream. It was his ship and he was being bullied out of enjoying the game.
I would not have a problem with someone streaming live on the internet broadcasting from a private group.

FDev's policy on stream-sniping and harassment hasn't changed:
"Hi everyone,
In light of recent issues relating to the way a small collective of players have been approaching and targeting specific private groups and other community events such as charity livestreams, we wanted to reinforce an important part of the existing rules regarding in-game harassment that every player agrees to when creating their account.
We wanted to reiterate some examples regarding the rules of Player harassment. If a player has been blocked from a private group, or a group/individual has taken every step possible to remove a player from their gameplay, then attempting to circumvent this in any fashion is a serious offense and action will be taken accordingly. Attempting to re-establish contact with an individual who has blocked a player through secondary accounts or other methods of attempting to evade the block are against the rules. Action can and will be taken against both the accounts in question and the main accounts of players that we deem to be harassing players through this method.
In addition taking action such as seeking out and targeting specific players purely for the purpose of being disruptive, to cause offence, or to upset players within the community can also be considered harassment. A perfect example of this is deliberately attempting to disrupt public livestreams such as the charity ones mentioned before. This includes, but is not limited to, the capturing of footage and releasing it publically in an attempt to create upset or gain notoriety through the actions listed above.
We have previously stated, and it remains true, that Frontier are not able to manage group specific rules. Players considered to be breaking these group rule sets as established by group moderators should be removed from those groups by said moderators. In addition, running a livestream in Open does invite the potential for players to approach and impact your gameplay and running a livestream in which you are declaring war on another group and they come and take action against you is reasonable and should be expected.
Ultimately it’s about context. The support team can and will review these kinds of offences and will be taking action against accounts that set their entire purpose on harassing players and groups in this way. They are currently investigating a number of incidents and will be dealing directly with any parties involved.

Cheating in Online Games
Any activity, such as cheating, hacking, botting, or tampering, that gives the account owner an unfair advantage in an online multiplayer game, is prohibited. This also includes exploiting another broadcaster’s live broadcast in order to harass them in-game, such as stream sniping.
That's not what I said. Being attacked in open is a valid part of the game, and I have been attacked many times in open and I have no problem with that. If people take enjoyment from attacking me in-game, using normal in-game means, that is totally fine. The issue here isn't about being attacked in open.
The issue is about being stalked in open by using streams as a tracking source, and then publicly harassing and gloating about the take down, in addition to threatening more of the same towards the target. This is against Frontier policy, simple as that.

A point well made. Exposure is already dismal, would be more so if the chances of something 'unexpected' happening were removed.

This has popped up a few times in this thread. Where is the source that FD want only Open play?? They repeatedly state there are three equal modes.
If they are trying to market the game by streaming ( I don't believe that is the primary aim), they should target the market, and given the majority of players do not play in Open, then streaming is Open for that reason is financial naivety.
