Long Distance from Sol Attempt

I've reached 184ly, or 65,831ly from Sol. This is approximately the distance reached by Deluvian, the current record holder (and all around cool dude) in the Cutter D-3303 Persera back in 3306.

We're in uncharted waters now.

Now I just need to keep moving forwards and get the Endurance Border home.

I have 522.3 tons of fuel left. Subtracting the 5.3T I'll need to jump, I'll be burning for 17 more days, travelling an additional 93.6ly. I'll see you then!
Take care when you hit the energy barrier. ;-)

Hi...

I've been tagging along just watching...listening and pulling for you, and I have a quick question.

I know normal "daily driver" flight during the regular game adventures around the bubble diminishes a ships integrity and in turn its efficiency thus causing most commanders to get their ship structurally repaired occasionally. So, wouldn't yours (and other folks) extended treks to the edge(s) cause your ship's jumps to become less and less efficient until fuel economy becomes too difficult to figure out.... determine or decipher accurately in route?

I made my first sojourn to Colonia from the bubble 3-4 years back (no record hunting just curious) and by the time I got there my vessel's integrity\structure was so degraded from the trip that repairs were in excess of several hundred thousand creds...I didn't know enough back then to keep an eye on how my ship(s) functioned during the extended jaunts I took then. I realize the game's mechanics must have changed since then but was this a factor when you were setting up your journey?

Just curious (for my next look into the black).

Good luck kiddo,

The ship integrity only affects the ships hull "hitpoints" in that it just makes it take a bit more damage the lower it is. When integrity gets down to 0, the hull is at 70%, so one would take effectively 30% more damage if they say had a hard landing on a planet. Integrity does not impact anything else like modules, fuel efficiency, so it not necessarily a critical thing to worry about.

Y'all should see the paint job though... or... lack of it :D

Fortunately it only affects hull integrity and the paint, although if it did affect efficiency it wouldn't matter for the purposes of this project. Contrary to what one would expect, the efficiency stat on the power plant doesn't have any relation to how fast you burn fuel, it just changes how hot your ship gets.

Take care when you hit the energy barrier. ;-)

We must be getting to the point where another report for Hutton Orbital Radio is warranted... ;)
Sure, just let me know if you need me to write anything!

I think I'll refrain from repairing the paint when I'm done. As a momento :)

Fingers crossed!!!
Despite my best efforts to mess this up, I've somehow made it this far. This is my last chance to fail :)

Since its range is too short to make the jump unless nearly completely unladen, the earliest I can jump is when I have about 11 tons remaining. I need 6 (5.3 rounding up) tons to jump, so I'll have a window of about 4 hours. Any earlier and I'll be too heavy to make it, and any later and I won't have enough fuel.

I think I'll set some alarms several hours in advance of the arrival time, just in case I fall asleep or something.

Ho Lee Smokes!!! I somehow never saw this thread until today.

Enchantmen, you are INSANE! And I love it! What an epic endeavor! The things you thought of during the planning phase blows my mind. Fantastic job so far and best wishes for safe outcome!

This is better than Olympics. I have you as friend in Elite, but you are playing in ED:Beyond, so I can't really see you on my Galaxy map, but I still know that you are there somewhere very very far away and I wish you the best of luck!

You remind me of those Slingshot racers in Expanse... That is how I imagine you, locked in your little tin can, rushing through the emptiness of space in an attempt to push the limits of human race another bit further...

Godspeed, Commander!

Thanks! This started as a thought experiment, but I ended up becoming invested enough to actually do it :)

Yeah, I'm playing in Horizons so my computer doesn't need to work as hard since I'm just flying in a straight line... I plan to switch to Odyssey for the last leg.

When I heard about previous attempts (before I started playing Elite), I imagined they used something like those slingshot racers: tiny, stripped down craft optimized to be as lightweight as possible with oversized engines, performing advanced maneuvers to push even further.

Turns out it's the exact opposite: giant, cumbersome space bricks with enormous fuel reserves and tiny underpowered thrusters flying in a straight line for weeks on end 😂

Somehow, despite my best attempts at sabotaging the mission through my own incompetence, I managed to make it.

The final distance is 279ly, which makes the total distance to Sol 65,926ly.

As per Deluvian's advice, I decided to make the jump with some fuel in reserve, just in case. I only needed 5.3 tons to jump, but I waited until I had 11. Any more than that and it would be too heavy to make the jump. As funny as it would be to call the Fuel Rats over 200ly from the nearest star, I think they've probably had enough of crazy people getting themselves stranded out here :)

This is almost certainly the farthest a Type-9 has ever jumped before. A fully optimized Type-9 caps out at 48.85ly, which a neutron star can boost up to 195.40ly. This one has an unboosted range of 25.17ly, so I'm going over 10 times farther than normal. I'm don't know if this voids the warranty or not, but I'm sure there's an engineer at Lakon watching this in horror.

The Endurance Border isn't fitted with a fuel scoop, since I wanted to pack as much fuel as possible, so it was stuck in Oevasy RG-Y d0. I planned ahead, though, so after it self destructed I had the first alt, Vivienne Clone #1, fly the A** Exploder all the way back from the bubble to refuel me.

eHknuB9.png

I now need to jump back to Oevasy SG-Y d0 to complete the full round trip. Slight issue: I actually transferred too much fuel and now it's too heavy to make the jump, so I'll need to burn off a ton or so first. Ah well, I had to make at least one mistake before wrapping it up :D

There is a slight issue now, though: there isn't a shipyard in any of the local fleet carriers and the Endurance Border can't jump far enough to make it to Beagle Point. I'm sorta stuck here. I think I'll hop on the fleet carrier owner's club and see if I can bribe someone in Beagle Point to pick me up in exchange for some Tritium...

Anyway, despite all the tedium, this project was surprisingly fun! I'd like to shout out CMDRs Jonaltriani and CrotchRoach for giving me a lift to Oevasy SG-Y d0 and CMDR Deluvian for helping inspire this journey and provide a lot of helpful advice along the way! Deluvian had me on for a special stream for the jump back, which I'll link to once it's out on YouTube.

o7 CMDRs :)

Congratulations Commander!

It was a privilege to be there for this very moment of your successful attempt. 65,926.34Ly from Sol sets the bar very high. I am glad you made it safely through, was living with you every second before that FSD kicked in :)

YouTube takes awfully long time, but I will post the link as soon as it is processed. For now, you made the history:

Congratulations CMDR! [STAR] The Fuel Chine carrier in Beagle Point has a resident Fuel Rat/Hull Seal if it can help you, and the [STAR] Beagle/Sol/Colonia shuttle carrier is incoming by march 8th, can reach you if needed (it's off duty until march 13th, at which point is going back to the Bubble/Colonia so may be used to shuttle you back), just ping me if you want (or contact FCOC :)
