Lost everything because of a random AI Interdiction for an empty cargo hold

Mission spawned incoming enemies don't scan you, they just attack - it's their reason for existing. Random pirates always scan and leave muttering inane chat about children going hungry if you're not carrying anything.

That said, you're right that surviving an NPC attack should be quite doable. If this was indeed a mission thing (and not a player) then it's possible that the OP and their friend simply took a high ranking mission and got in over their heads.

THIS.

From OP's post about being so close to a mission reward this wasn't just a cargo run. If you're on a mission and you're way underranked, if you get interdicted you'll die. FAST. It's happened to me. Dead in five seconds. Don't. Fly. Without. Rebuy.

As stupid as the NPCs are sometimes, if you had a contract open you might as well have a target painted on your hull.
Also, a T9 is a very vulnerable ship.
Also, you can't lose everything in Elite if you don't disrespect RULE 1 of the game: NEVER FLY WITHOUT REBUY.

Rebuy & shields(good ones) , excellent advice from all of you !

I was mining with 6A shields and took on a wing of 4 pirates with my fighter, whilst I started mining and ignored them. Lost 2 rings before I realised !
Now I use engineered 8A and help my fighter, and nothing can touch me(NPCs I mean)
I don't like pirates taking the mickey whilst scanning me :)

I just have to say that I was in the Ice Box recently and was destroyed by an NPC. Here is what was odd. I had only limpets, I was not wanted, I was not on any missions, and I was just AFK in space in solo.

I had something come up at home and I just thought I'll pop out of supercruise. Left the Anaconda sitting in space for about 40 minutes.

Came back and ship was destroyed.

I know, you'd think I was wanted or something. Or on a mission, or had that one void opal I forgot in the hold. Nope, only limpets.

Never afk in Elite. Seriously.

So there is such a thing a NPC gankers. Are you sure it was a NPC?
I'm kind of wondering if the OP had taken a data courier mission and had been smacked by the ought-to-be expected NPC. It's the only thing that makes any kind of sense to me in this scenario. they did say they had an empty hold. Still - 500LY away? That sounds WAY too far to be reasonable.
(Shrug) taking data courier in a T9 is like signing up to race the Indy 500 in a dump truck.

Did the OP helping another player in what I assume was a wing type cargo mission...details was the, "Hostile ships may be sent against you" included? If it was there tthen it is a political issue between factions and zero cargo doesn't matter. The player will be a target. Taking a Type-9 into harms way having some defense/offense experience and at least knowing how to master the interdiction mini-game in any ship (especially important in a Type-9) is wise. Anything less and bad things happen.

Regards

As you can see, OP, you won't get any sympathy from the fierce and loyal ED fanbase. Game is fine, it's basically perfect; it's you that is in error.

Reality is that this simple AI script that runs doesn't know jack about anything, and you'll be interdicted repeatedly because the fanbase loves it - they call it "content". It's a cheap mechanic. And adds nothing.

Probably better to start looking at other forms of entertainment as after 5-6 years this one hasn't changed.

There's no sympathy deserved here, OP made some bad choices, ones we've probably all made along the way.

I'm not a huge fan of FDev, but I just don't see the point in ing on the game without justification. In this instance, there's valid reasons the NPC might have attacked and the OP fails to give sufficient detail or fully answer questions, so this is just salty speculation on your behalf.

I want to see a ship loadout.. Did OP have sufficient shields? Was OP on a wing mission? There are too many unanswered questions here, unless you are a salt dispenser with a size insecurity.

I just lost my type 9 freighter, and the 100+ million credits I poured into it, because I was helping a friend with a cargo run, and the messed up AI interdiction jumped me for my empty cargo hold as I went to go complete the contract. I wish they would update the interdictions so it doesn’t attack you when you have nothing in your cargo, and if you do get blown to bits, that it just puts you at the nearest station, not one 500 light years away from whatever station you were next to that had whatever mission reward waiting for you. Like I just lost A weeks worth of grinding out money in 10 seconds to be stranded 500 light years away from my mission reward, it’s honestly game breaking

Noob 101 ……………….. NEVER FLY WITHOUT ENOUGH CASH FOR REBUY!!

Have to say, I am getting random interdictions when I don't have any cargo. I am guessing they might be spawning based on the materials or data I have collected for engineering. I'm pretty good at the tug-of-war mini game though, so rarely have to fight if I don't want to.

And yes, I never fly without rebuy ... rule #1 ;)

Or fly with a ship that can fight back :)
Then you won't need a rebuy... oh wait

I never lose an NPC inradiction mini game. Unless in my T9 , it's not engineered and to "boaty" slow to win, i used to lose 75% of all Int's in a T9 . So now rather than risk trying to survive 40 secinds cooldown 75% of the time, if im in the T9 and an NPC int's me i do this.

1. move four pips to Shields , 2 pips to engines
2. Power down throttle to submit.
3. Ignore NPC , as soon as submitted, and 10 second cooldown starts, max throttle up, hit "boost". If the NPC fires, hit "chaff". After 10 seconds and "maybe 1 ring of sheilds gone, hit FSD and jump back into supercruise.
4. Carry on to destination. Have sometimes done this 2-3 times in a row with some NPC. Often on the 3rd time the cops show up within seconds and you jump as they start giving the NPC a kicking!!

Last time I was interdicted was also in a type 9, when I was transporting Tritium to my FC in the beta, so I wanted to get as much as I could into it, no shields, light armor, no guns, interdicted twice on way to the FC by NPC's and made it with no problems.

Pirates don't attack you if your cargo hold is empty. They interdict you, because they need to scan you first, but if they find you are empty they leave you alone.

Hmm, i also got immediately attacked by NPC pirates when dropping out of supercruise at someones carrier.. no scan, just pewpew right of the bat, not wanted, not in a wing
