Major Expansions

I thought they were still debating that one. Seem to recall reading an article recently that some theorists thought some minor variance in sub-atomic forces would result in the whole caboodle collapsing and that it might have already happened, except we can't see it yet since it might take a few years and be beyond visible range. :D

Well it's more to do with the force of gravity and the amount of dark matter, but yeah... we don't know.

not that I think E: D will share the same fate and hopefully the collapse (if it happens) will not interfere with me playing the game (I just won't stand for it!).

The main thing is to save your game before the fateful moment. Maybe later they arrived to repair the collapse and you can reload the game

:p

This has to be the most off topic thread in history, lol.

Maybe there should be an ultimate universal expansion expansion pack where everyone is so far from everyone else that there is nothing to do but watch the heat death of the universe.
But that might not sell very well....:)

Once you have the expansions that allow SPL and walking about in first person, are any future updates likely to be little more than content updates?

The only thing I can think of right now, when looking at other space sims for inspiration and really just one in particular, that might be considered a major expansion would be station/planetary base ownership.

Still waaay too early to be talking expansion. There are so many variables that will need to be taken into account now just to get the vanilla game in working order. It is being designed to allow for expansion and that is all you should be concerned with. Once we are in the gamma phase I'd look at talking expansion.

Talking is fine, what we have these threads for? Besides I think most of us have talked vanilla for the better part of year. Time for some chocolate.

DB has been cited as saying there will not be an Elite 5 and that ED would be running for years. (I read 10+ but that could have been someones opinion)

I seem to recall David Braben saying in one of his videos that Frontier would not be making a sequel to THIS game for at least 10 years. This suggests to me that there will be expansions released fairly regularly until they are ready to start work on a sequel. I personally would be quite happy with regular expansions for the next 10 years as this would take me into my mid 50's which is probably too old to be playing computer games.

I think some here might argue with that statement, as will I when I get there! :)

Oh dear god I hope not. I am probably the same age as you are now and have been enjoying computer games since I got my ZX81 back in the day.

I intend to be playing until the day I croak, maybe slower, maybe in a different style, but still playing.

:D

Same here, gaming is still my smack and I think it always will be :)

And one day, if your eyes can not, you will ask at someone to play for you, and you will give him, of strategic directives

:p

Reminds me of my two player Elite sessions, one of us on the Kempston with the other running thrusters, missiles and ECM and giving a tactical overview. Change of role every time we docked.

Ha! When we were 13, me and my best mate used to do the same thing. I'd completely forgotten about it until I saw your post.
It was on a Spectrum, and we both used the keyboard, so it was a bit like playing Twister with your fingers.

Oh yeah! I'm 70 and as long as my eyes can make out the monitor I'll be playing E:D...

This post makes me happier than you can know! Well done! My wife didn't look too happy when I told her, she keeps hoping I'll 'grow out of it'.

.....
Maybe mapping Google Earth onto the Earth in the game so you can buzz your house? (not really a major expansion , more of an Easter egg if you can find earth.....)

Just had a vision of setting down a Panther Clipper on our local school playing field, which is a couple of minutes walk from our house. :D

Jack :)

If they can actually pull off - in an interesting way - planetary gameplay and inside space station gameplay, then I'm happy forever.

Content update like more quests and major story events sure, but game engine wise I don't need to see anything else.
