Major Sector searchable map

Hopefuly some of the systems I've put into EDSM, on the Abyssal Plain will start to show up on this during the next update :)

July's update somewhat late because the automatic one didn't work and I was on holiday. The download on July 1 worked, so the data is correct now.

The new data collection in 2.1 has made a highly visible difference (the coordinates file from EDSM was 2.5 times bigger than June's), and the impact from all ongoing expeditions is clearly visible:
- the line between the bubble and the core is now increasingly strongly charted, in a broad highway, not just on the outbound route of Distant Worlds. Past the core it is mostly the DW route which is charted, but much more strongly than before
- the path to and within the formidine rift, already relatively well-charted, has expanded ten-fold
- the track of the Sag-Carina arm is much more strongly defined, especially near Sol
- a bright track of the Crab Nebula expedition is now visible south and southeast of Sol, with sectors going from 60 to 6000 stars known since June.

Additionally, several lighter tracks are visible, as even a single ship passing through a sector will plot the positions of tens of stars. For at least a few months to come these solo trips are likely to stay clearly visible and there are still many squares within the denser galaxy completely black, especially on the western side.

August's update is now up (and this one worked automatically, too...)

What's changed since last time:
- the number of systems with coordinates in EDSM has approximately doubled, with almost all sectors part of the galactic disk now having at least one known star. Still a few to go, though
- the end of the Crab Nebula expedition has pushed a couple of regions near the pulsar itself over the 10,000 mark
- the home sector (Wregoe/Synuefe) has become the first to pass the 100,000 mark
- the Borderlands Venture has added 1758 stars to its chosen region (up from 2 at the start of July)
- the long-running surveys of Sag-Carina and the Formidine Rift have added significant numbers too

All of those would be big news on their own, but they are obscured by the story of Jaques and Eol Prou:
- the region containing Eol Prou has gone from an obscure sector with under 400 systems to having almost 10,000 as the nebula and its surrounds are investigated
- the convoys to and from the station have left an almost solid line of blue (10,000+) on the map, with the August Exodus itself mostly still to come...
- so far Jaques doesn't appear to be getting much use as a base for further exploration, with the sectors just past it (coming from Sol) remaining largely unknown ... but that probably won't last long

At the moment (August map):
0: black
1-9: grey
10-99: reddish grey
100-399: red
400-999: orange-brown
1000-4999: orange-yellow
5000-9999: yellow
10000-24999: cyan
25000-99999: purple
100000 or more: magenta

Earlier maps didn't have the purple or magenta categories and I think the start of yellow may have been slightly different.

September's update is now up. Yet again, it failed to work automatically - this time, because the JSON download from EDSM was so large the parser ran out of memory. One selection of a more efficient parser later, and we should be fine from now on

Big changes:
- most sectors on the highway to Jaques now exceed 25,000 charted stars. Exploration beyond Jaques still remains relatively low so far. Eol Prou alone almost has more charted stars now than the home sector did 3 months ago. Of course, it has a lot more stars to chart...
- following a certain hint, Eafots is now above 10,000, and the route out to Heart and Soul is getting even more traffic.
- Borderlands have added another 1,700 systems as they steadily map their distant sector.
- The whole map is getting brighter, and completely uncharted sectors much rarer.

Coming up in September:
- GNE launch, travelling some way south of the highway to Flyai Eaescs by the end of the month, beyond which little is known.
- a further strengthening of the Jaques highway seems inevitable
- recent events in and around Col 70 and Barnard's Loop may encourage further exploration in the relatively uncharted regions SE of Sol.

October's update is up (and worked automatically)

The route to Jaques is getting even more strengthened, Beagle Point sector passes 5000 known systems, the GNE trail is clearly visible, and for some reason everyone is still scared of that one sector just to the east of Sag A*. We're now finally at the stage where the full shape of the galactic disk is visible, and with 2.1's auto-trilateration the map is becoming a stronger representation of where explorers go: the FGE's Sag-Carina survey is still clearly the most popular, once the obvious tourist sites are excluded.

Ian this is amazing. I'm organizing an independent exploration journey called The S.H.E.P.A.R.D. Mission set to depart Nov 5th.

I will be sure to get everyone on ED DISCOVERY and EDSM to Log our progress. How do I access the most up to date map each month?

The latest month's map will always be at the URL in the first post. Previous maps can be accessed from the links at the top of that page.

Look forward to seeing your expedition mark out its path.

November's map update is now up.

The shape of the mapped sectors hasn't changed that much this month, though many of the major routes are becoming more defined, and even fewer vertical slices are completely blank. Major expeditions travelling this month:
- departure of the SHEPARD Expedition from the bubble towards the Scutum-Centaurus arm
- Galactic Nebula Expedition and Colonia Core Circuit Expedition operating between Colonia and Sol
The activity around Colonia has seen the Eol Prou region overtake the Synuefe region to become the most charted, through a combination of dedicated mapping projects and simply having so many more stars so that even two ships following the same heading with slightly different jump range are going to have very few stars in common.

This month, the map also gets a new feature. Regions which contain named subsectors (e.g. Col 132, NGC 6337 or Lyncis) will have an asterisk on the map after their name. Hover the asterisk to get the number of known stars in that subsector which are also in that region.

December's map update is now up.

The overall map is pretty stable now - notable changes from January:
- SHEPARD enters the largely uncharted far east of the galaxy, leaving the arm at Prungoa and heading into the almost complete unknown. A more substantial data sample is already available up to Oob Free
- further enhancement of our mapping of the line between Colonia and Sag A* as the GNE comes to an end and the C3E joins it.
- a more distinct line between Colonia and Beagle Point is also appearing
- there has been a significant increase in the mapping of the Plaa Aec region and its surroundings, following recent revelations. Eafots was of course already well studied, and Pru Aescs, being on the direct route between Colonia and Sol, was well charted if not necessarily thoroughly explored.

Major expeditions this month:
- Shepard expedition continues on Leg 2 of its ambitious survey, regrouping at Eock Bluae before continuing. Part of the GNE fleet will attempt to rendezvous with it.
- CCC leaves the bubble for Colonia

Thanks for the update - I really like that map/representation and have been following its progress for quite some time now.

I'm currently using it to map the missing sectors in the N/W quadrant. Hope to close that blind spot around "-21, 34" in a few weeks while heading south.

@Ian: A few questions/inputs:
  1. Would it be possible to add the actual date of the ESDM-Exports?
  2. Would it be possible to scwitch between the current sector-numbering and ED-coordinates per sector?
  3. Will a new sector name show as soon as a system is available in EDSM or only after the system has coordinates?
  4. Will the matrix expand automatically when/if sectors are added outside (e.g. further East/West) of the current borders?
While I'm still far up here in the North-West I'll be trilatering one system per sector out on the N/W rim.
