Major Sector searchable map

September's update is available. The lines between the three major points (Sol, SagA*, Colonia) grow increasingly solid. For now, there are no major long-range expeditions out there, according to EDSM.

Coming up there is the Minerva Centaurus expedition departing in November, which will again look at the under-explored Scutum-Centaurus arm. The arm itself has been traced on the map already, by the SHEPARD expedition among others, but there is still much to discover.

In January the Beagle Point expedition will travel the routes between Colonia and Beagle Point. While the area is already relatively well-mapped, the expedition will be travelling relatively slowly and so its progress may still be visible.

Thanks! Great work, as usual!

Good for me: I'm next to a red block, and was wondering about what to do next :D

Small suggestion: Would you mind adding a legend for the colors' thresholds?

Thanks.

December's update is up. Both MCE and DECE are off on their way - at the moment mostly passing through relatively well-explored space compared with the expedition size, so limited effects on the map colours so far, though DECE is the more noticeable of the two. Both should be heading out into less-explored space this month.

The map doesn't change colours as much month-by-month as it used to, so I save up a few months to have something to say.

Big changes since December:
- the routes to Beagle are becoming much more distinct. Interestingly, the old DWE route is still prominent, but much bigger is a broad line from Colonia to Beagle. Sag A* to Beagle is less defined than the other two.
- the SW and SE quadrants are much more defined, with the path of the galactic arms in the SW particularly so.
- the loop of the GNE is still visible where it passes SW of the direct Colonia-Sol line
- the M7E trails are becoming overwritten by later traffic, but the places it jumped between arms NW of Colonia are still distinct
- DECE's progress is very visible on the galactic rim
- Colonia's influence as an exploration hub continues to be reflected - another outpost around Phreia Byoe might help to encourage exploration of the lesser-travelled parts of the NE quadrant.

The Sol-Sag A*-Colonia triangle is now becoming increasingly filled - depending on the exact route, even DWE2 which promises to be larger than the original and have the advantage of automatic trilateration, may not be noticeable until it passes the core.

Time for another update. Since April:

- the general level of exploration of all sectors has unsurprisingly continued to increase
- the trends from the increases in jump range are interestingly visible with the direct Colonia-Beagle and SagA-Beagle routes becoming much denser over the last six months, while the old DWE route around the Abyss has barely changed.
- the Colonia-Sol-SagA triangle continues to increase in density
- the overall brightening has erased the trails of most early expeditions now, under repeated crossings by thousands of explorers. A small loop SW of Colonia from the Galactic Nebula Expedition, most of the outer trails of the Mercury 7 Expedition, and the old DWE route between SagA and Beagle are all that remain distinct.
- Colonia's influence as a centre of exploration to rival the bubble is clear, especially comparing the western and eastern halves of the galaxy

So ... what next?
- DWE 2 will depart with what is expected to be by far the largest post-trilateration expedition. Even then, its route as far as SagA may be hard to spot.
- the Codex will add rumours and leads all over the galaxy. Perhaps some previously unknown sectors will soon be major destinations.

Fantastic, thanks for the update! Still one of my favourites :)

I'd be very interested to see this map separated by sector layers, i.e. about 6 maps, each showing the density of the sectors on layers (-3/-2/-1/+1/+2/+3). Any chance that's doable without too much work?

This should be possible, yes. I'll have a look at it for December's run.

EDIT: okay, code now in place to generate layer maps for December.

Here we go - December's map is up, with separate "layer" maps available as well.

The structure of the mid-spiral arms is still very visible in the -1 and +2 layers, though most remain largely unexplored.

The 0 and +1 maps are very similar, though Colonia's position far below the plane makes the Sol-Colonia and Beagle-Colonia routes noticeably brighter on the layer 0 map. Conversely, on the western half of the galaxy the middle and outer spiral arms are far more defined on the +1 map above the plane.

Up to February, Distant Worlds, despite its size, was covering well-explored regions, and wasn't really visible in changes on the map.

In March's map, however, the first bit of its route becomes visible, on the crossing between Polo Harbour in Boewnst and Sag A* - several regions on the direct line have moved from blue (10000-50000) to purple (50000-100000), many with around 30,000 extra known systems. At that density of discovery, DW2's trail after it leaves the core should be extremely visible - this is going to be an expedition which puts a very long-lasting trail on the map.

Very few trails from previous expeditions now remain. The western-most loop of the Galactic Nebula Expedition is indistinctly visible if you know where to look, and the crossing points of the Mercury 7 Expedition between the Perseus and Outer arms are fuzzy but still detectable - and, of course, despite working with manual trilateration only, the original DW route from the Core to Beagle is still clear.

As expected, this month's map shows a very distinctive purple trail from Distant Worlds as it departs the core. Many sectors on their route so far have more new stars reported as a result of the expedition than had been reported in the entire previous history of exploration - including the many untrilaterated stars from Distant Worlds 1

Thank you for your work. I use some of the systematic information you provide in one of my own projects and it helped tremendously and saved me a ton of time :)

May's map is up - unsurprisingly the big change is a slightly patchy line of purple from Sag A* most of the way to Beagle, surrounded by a wider blue and yellow region, much larger than before. Further strengthening of the mapping of this region is likely as stragglers come in to Beagle over the next month - more interesting may be to see the impact on the return routes as people start to go home again: the return from first DWE reinforced the old First Galactic Exploration trails following the arm back in quite a bit.

As with the start of the departure from Sag A* in April's map, some of these sectors are twice - or even three times! - better catalogued this month than they were in the last month.

June's map is up. The line of (>25000 systems) purple now stretches almost all the way from Sag A* to Beagle. Obviously it also means quite a bit more to have 25000 catalogued stars in a sector on the edge of the Abyss, or in it, than a sector near the core [1].

Elsewhere in the galaxy the general density of discovery continues to increase, with only two non-fringe regions (Loijoae / Hypoi Bli and Jongeia / Dryeia Eaec) having fewer than 500 catalogued stars left

[1] The same effect means that Eol Prou is still the best catalogued individual cube, despite the much greater number of pilots around the Sol region.
