Ooh, couldn't find the first one in the end, but what do I come across, another new type for the region!

And confirmed under my CMDR name in the codex for Recepta Umbrux Teal in Errant Marches!

I have a few questions. 1. What tells me if I have discovered a biological before? Is it the blue diamond? And, 2. If I have scanned the same biological from another system, do I still get the maximum payout if I scan it again in a different system? 3. If I scan a biological in one system and get the green checkmark, shouldn't it stay there when I see the same biological in another system, so I know I have scanned it before? (unless I get the same payout no matter which system I scan it in then this question doesn't matter)

Payouts are actually per planet. So you get the first-logged bonus if you are the first one to scan that bio on that planet.

It's only the Codex entries that are by Sector, and those payouts are negligible. You get Codex entries for the fun of completing them, not for the payout.

So if I am landing on planets and I am the first foot fall, and I scan something I have scanned before on a different planet, I still get the full amount? If so, I have a lot more scanning to do....

Just a quick note, there is a legend down in the settings for bioinsights, but the blue diamonds indicate a bio you haven't seen in this region but is already discovered, thus once you discover it for a particular region you won't see any blue diamonds for that bio until you enter a new region. The small orange diamond, as in the picture above where there's a blue and orange diamond next to eachother for Recepta Umbrux Teal, indicates a bio that no-one has seen in that region yet, so you will be first to scan and your name will appear as the discover in the in game codex. The green check mark is per planet, if there is nothing there you have seen and scanned the bio in that region for the codex, but not on that particular planet.

Codex rewards are tiny, despite scanning many I have only 3m or so in codex rewards, although using the bioscanner I have probably accumulated in excess of 3b in rewards once first discovery is taken into account. Low value bio, like 1m for bacteria I only scan for the codex if it's a new bio and don't bother sampling, a max 3m payout for bio is simply not worth ten minutes or so of searching and scanning, yes sometimes it's way faster, but often it's not. I generally only sample if a bio is worth 5m or more, scan without leaving the ship if they are worth less, but it's up to you how to do it really. If a planet only has bacteria worth 1m and nothing else worth scanning or sampling I don't bother even mapping, not worth it!

Very helpful, thank you both. I quit using the onboard scanner a while ago and jump out and scan. I pretty much do what you are doing by selectivity scanning higher reward bio's, but if I land and everything is right in front of me, I will go ahead and scan it. Do you find that certain stars are better than others for biological life?

Some bio only appear for certain star types. You will note in the picture above there are pick axes and a star in one column, the pick axes indicate the bio is reliant on certain minerals on the planet, the star indicates that particular bio only appears in systems with a particular star type, so yes some stars are better than others, as are some atmospheres and some mineral compositions, but you will never get a full list of codex discoveries by sticking to a fixed set of stars, this is one reason why I never filters stars, it limits what you can find and sometimes you miss the good stuff. For instance in you filter to stars that have a high chance of ELW's you will never find that rare ELW that orbits a Neutron star!

Anyway, good luck out there, I am sure you will get on with it now it has been explained a bit!

Oh just to note, if you are using a program like EDDiscovery certain reports only get sent when scanned using the on board scanner, they won't get reports for planetary bio if you just use the sampler, so I try to always use both.

Thanks again, V.

Composition scanning biologicals before using the hand scanner keeps 3rd party devs happy - myself included :) . There's a couple of reasons but the main one is that the journal entries for hand scans don't show us the colour of the species scanned (despite us asking for this information to be added for over a year). "Often", using only the hand scanner will also generate the necessary codex entry journal line - but it is not guaranteed - in particular, if you sample the same biological on multiple planets in the same system there's a good chance they won't all produce the necessary codex entry line.

Here's the link to the current issue tracker ticket if anyone would like to vote on it. Even better if you're able to confirm it and add to it :)

Are these "not predcited" values of interest to you at all?

Bet you've been there many years ago before the FSS, scanned the star and left, doing that means the star isn't registered in the journal, so if the bio is dependant on star types Bioinsights won't recognise it because the journal doesn't get that data, it already has it from before! In every case it has happened to me that's been the explanation!

Yep this is almost certainly it. Eventually I hope to add spansh support to help mitigate this but it's on the back burner at the moment.

Hello, I have a strange result in the collider tab, with two lines exchanging system names.
Could it be my logs (I have a lot of them), or is there another problem?

I've added a new plugin for the Galactic Exploration Catalog. It's quite simple - it'll show you the 50 nearest POIs, their approximate direction as well as their ratings. Have some improvements in mind, but most are waiting on Vithigar to finish UI rewrite for Core.
You can grab plugin here

Excellent idea, sadly I am a long way away from most of the ones in my list, it will probably become more useful once I am traveling long distance again, at the moment I am pottering around in Vulcan Gate still.
