Out of interest, what criteria were tweaked and where did you get region information from? EDSM or Codex?

I forget exactly what criteria it was - I think one was maybe Bacterium Verrata missing a possible atmosphere. I should make a better effort to note what was changed I guess :)

As for region data, it's actually something I've been working on for quite a while but the lightbulb moment came at the end of last year from CMDR @Latenoid here. With that, and my existing data I've made a first attempt at which species are where. I used in-game Codex to verify a handful of things I expected to be in certain regions but had no data on - but it's quite an onerus task. Pretty sure EDSM is not up to date with everything (though being worked on I think) - I didn't use that at all.

Yes, hopelessly out of date, the bio data for the new bio doesn't get recorded at all, I have tested it myself as have others, there is an update coming for it soon I hope, but if you compare the EDSM codex to the in game codex you will find it is quite often 500+ entries short for particular areas.

Well. We ask Anthor on his Discord. He said he's not adding them because he's missing pictures. So we said: Ok, we'll get you these pictures, just tell us which format and naming convention you want. Anthor said he tells us later because he's with the kids right now. That was 7 days ago, I've given up on this.

But the good news is that Anthor stores the events containing the data, so they are there and could be made visible any time.

I don't begrudge any of the third party site makers some free time from what must certainly be an onerous task, yes it is good news the data is stored, but just think about how much work it is to keep a site like EDSM up to date with changes whenever FDEV produce a major update like this! It will happen when it happens.

That said, I’m working on a companion app that will let you have an actual notification for any species that might be present that you are specifically interested in - in that scenario you could tag all the valuable things and get notifications when they might be present. Would that work for you?

I would say, most of the time, unless there is at least 1 bio worth 250k+ or I wont even go over and map the planet. As I type this though I realize it's actually a price/sample distance or just high value that I really keep an eye out for. For example a ~500k+ CR I wont care if its 150m/500m/800m sample distance. If it's 200k @ 150m then I am more likely to be interested.

I'd be interested in something that said whether one of the scanned species was one that I had not come across. I'm trying to create a log of every variety of every species.

Yeah, me too... given that the app can parse all log entries. Even more so if we could be be alerted to finding one that has not even been logged in the codex in the current sector - but that might be beyond what's possible.

On that [side rant coming up], I'm not even sure if the in-game vista genomics kiosk would let you know when you cash in. After all it tells you "congratulations you are the first to log x" when that actually just means first to log it on that planet - big whoop. Would we even get a, "wow, you have genuinely discovered a whole new species!" or a "you are first to log this species in this region" messages? Also the codex should let us filter by our own discoveries, and where our discoveries were first (as those ones our names are given the glory seen by all players) I think I have a couple of genuine first discoveries in the Codex, but do you think I can find them? lol

It's FDev's lack of attention to detail and common sense functionality that irks me... but then I document software (and find bugs) for a living IRL.

OK, let me manage expectations a bit. The app itself is not that clever. It originally came into existence as an aid to debugging BioInsights - it's can be a pain trying to work out why a particular species wasn't detected on a planet and I needed an easier way to see what I believed the requirements were, e.g.:

It looked less pretty to start with (it's not exactly a stunner now), but I figured others might have an interest in specific requirements too.

I figured it might also be useful to make a note of what species/variants I needed to find in a particular region (rather than keep refering to the Codex), so added the ability to Mark variants (the grey blocks are variants I don't believe exists, you can't mark these)

I then decided it would be cool if BioInsights could tell me about a particular species I'd marked. That was a bit more effort, but:

As well as noting it "Marked", it also gives a notification stating it too.


It is unaware of regions. If you want to use across multiple regions, you need to configure it for each one. It lets you save your data and load different files, so if this is your interest I'd suggest naming them as per each region (you'll also need to manually load them when you change region). Also, it seemed better to leave it to the user to decide what they were actually interested in - so you might be trying to complete your Codex, but maybe someone else is trying to find a specific Codex entry in a region that is missing it, or maybe you're only interested in Bios over half a million in value.

There are still a couple of issues I need to deal with. The current CG has slowed me down as I've mostly been living in Alcor the past week. I will see if I can get it in a releaseable form soon(ish).

Got Tubus Soroibu - Turquoise

I'll take a look at this for next release - but it doesn't appear to be caused by region-specific things, at least. Thanks for the report.

  • added missing Carbon Dioxide atmosphere for Tubus Sororibus
  • added missing Indigo variant for various Stratum
  • added missing Nitrogen atmosphere for Fungoida Bullarum
  • added missing Emerald variant for Recepta Umbrux
  • enhanced automated error reporting


Majority of automated errors reported are down to people re-visiting a system, and BioInsights not knowing parent stars because they don't produce further Scan events. Working to handle these better.

CodexCompanion is delayed as scope has gotten bigger, and a chunk more work will be required (but it should be worth it)

Please continue to highlight instances where Bios are seen but not expected - especially if they may relate to region.
 
How do we know if it region related? It just says "Not predicted"
Good point, post them here either way and I can check :)

Edit: Just to add - it's also helpful if you're submitting data to EDSM, it can make debugging that bit easier (but full journal logs also work)
