Mechanical scrap

Ok, any insite into this CMDRs?
I'm need some Mechanical scrap for an upgrade.
My research suggests you get them from ship salvage, from transport ships.

Question, do I need to destroy the ship to get it, like I've picked up stuff from combat ships?
Or can I find them in wreck sites? I tend to only find the old illegal cargo stuff at wrecks

Problem is, I do try to RP my game a little, relatively good guy, smuggling is fine but not killing innocents. Maybe I can find some wanted traders? And collect there bounty.

Pretty sure I've this in the debris left by ships after Bounty Hunting. Try Nav Beacons and RES[LOW]. Let the cops do most of the work and earn some CR to boot. Collector Limpets are handy for this but be aware they will collect anything even illegal salvage so be ready to kill the limpets and dump stuff before the cops scan you.

I just found some at a wreck site, but the majority that I've discovered were amongst the newly-wrecked debris fields of Kumo Crew transports. :D

I've also had some as mission rewards.

2x Mechanical Scrap [Ship Salvage (Transport ships)]"

Thanks guys,
I'll take a look at a few of those.
No problem with combat, I just don't want to go weapons hot on an innocent trader just for some of his ship.
If your wanted and clearly up to no good however. [yesnod]

I'll take a look around, thanks.
Limpets a good idea. Not used them and didn't think they would work on none cargo stuff.
o7 CMDRs

I found some from Keelbacks primarily (they were wanted). Wouldn't mechanical scrap just be the blown up ship? I know, I know. But, it blew up. It was mechanical. Now it's scrap. [weird][???]

Best place I've found for this kind of stuff with the best drop rate is combat zones. Although they are not for the faint hearted.

Just target what you want to pick up before deploying a collector limpet. They will gather that item then self-destruct. Wasteful? Sure, but they're only limpets.

RP Good guy ways to get "Trade ship" Manufactured Materials

Encoded Signal Source
Degraded signal sources
Wanted Trader leaning ship at Nav Beacons and Signal Sources
Wanted Asp Explorers (could be other multirole ships too, yet to find out) at Nav Beacons and Signal Sources

Also can find it at mission boards.
There was an important boom delivery data mission and the part of the reward was a mechanical scrap... High end :)
Quite rare though.

Well roleplaylike I could tell myself that traders who fly in an anarchy nav beacon are in fact asking for it ;)

Lol i needed these for plasma upgrade.. go to anarchy find ceremonial comms and w8 for the weddong barge.. kill the bride and scoop the loot and w8 for the groom to turn up in 5 mins and do him away too. You will have scrap out the spout and no bounty... behaps some bad karma lol

Look for USS that say Combat Aftermath, these are where I find many of the less common parts that I need and Mechanical scrap is definitely a common one at these sites.

Good luck,
Cmdr K@minsky

I have come across these in Combat Aftermath (and there seems to be a new one recently called High Quality ... something or other).

A theory I am working on is Combat Aftermath and other "better" USS are affected by state. I seemed to get more of these when the controlling faction was in Boom, although this might just be because i did not have illegal on so was looking out for USS. I believe state affects what USS you get, I just need to start recording things to prove it!
