Engineers Medium Security Settlement List and Guide for Modified Embedded Firmware

Hi,

I noticed this thread starts as medium base listings yet I have seen that small are also supposed to have MEF. The Pathfinder app suggests so too. I am not finding them at all at the moment. Nothing but stufg I dont need. Even though I selected MEF on Pathfinder. RNG not being kind to me, is medium better?
To be correct, this thread has been started with large size medium security bases - but it was 50 pages ago at the time of 2.1 - and in-game rules and our knowledge about slightly evolved since then =))))
I think that the most complete statistical data on materials yield is still here ("More stats" page).
Some very general rules -
1) upper limit of "rarity" increase with security level
2) number of "seeds" increase with size
And as always all is in the hands of RNGesus.

As a conclusion for this really long thread - MEF has reappeared as a mission reward - update 2.3.11=)

Do we know more on this, what mission types, what system economies drop them as I am struggling with base scanning. Maybe I have better luck with missions. Three sessions now and RNG is not with me.

So is using the EDPathFinder tool is probably the best way to go about this? What exactly should I be checking in the tool as my filters?

This is what I did, I tried a mixture of "small" or "medium" bases with "MEF" ticked, and "no fight". I have struggled to get more than a handful of MEF so far. :(

I don't know much about getting it from missions as it's not my specialty, may be someone more competent can give you more info. I can only suppose to look for similar directions in currently more popular CIF-searching threads (like this), in particular I find this "story" from Dominic Corner very promising.

The best part of EDPathfinder is it's ability to build routes, however I think that it's filtering need some further improvements.
So far I only tried it as I have no need for materials at the moment, but may I suggest following:
1)Check "MEF" (however if I understand well it takes into account only the fact that MEF can be obtained from a given base, but not the probability of this)
2)Check "No fight" and "restricted" (there are only two types in "restricted" collection - M6H and M5H - while the first is not of particular interest, the second one - M5H - have the best odds so far and can be done without taking a fight using one of the "special" methods)
3)Check all sizes.

Thanks for this guide.

Is there actually something to scan in every settlement? Yesterday I made my first approach to an medium security +++ settlement and drove around a bit. Didn't find anything to scan (but a red "laser door/barrier").

Finally I got stuck in some kind of military zone where all gates were closed after I entered.

That was an L1M (Large_Size-Medium_Security-Industrial_Layout) you have visited as I can assume, and yes, it contains kind of a trap.
And "something to scan" in first place depends on your goal. In all "bigger-then-tiny" size settlements there is always some "scannable" objects, in particular for L1M - network of 3 datapoints, 3 terminals, 3 generators and so on. So the first question is what you are looking for?

I am looking for MEF. Thanks for the explanation, I found the data points and managed to scan all three in time. Unfortunately no MEF.

Btw, it would be helpful if the pictures in the OP would have a legend for the symbols.

The droprate for MEF's is never high enough (you can check statistics on the "more stats" page here), also the everywhere present RNGesus must be taken into account.
In the OP - and in my signature - links to my mapping project spreadsheets are present, and there you can find all necessary info - i.e. maps legend (in two variations at least - 1,2). The number of symbols used is too big to place them on every map.

Thanks :) Got lucky at my second try and got 6 MEFs in one run!

The thing to remember when you start seeing MEF drop from bases is that the same RNG that can give you 8-10 bases with no MEF can also give you 4-5 bases in a row that all drop MEF. Once I get an MEF drop I always try to do another 2-3 bases and I've often found that the RNG gives "clusters" of MEF for several bases in a row, then goes back to no MEF drops for another 8-10 bases. These two effects seem to average out fairly well over say 15-20 bases in a row but over smaller runs it can be hard to see these trends. I have no idea why the RNG does this, but I suspect it is an interative process of some kind where the "seed" for the RNG generation isn't truly random but is some variable that tends to occur in clusters for some reason. I have seen this behavior in other games as well and it usually boils down to a suboptimal RNG that isn't actually capable of true random output.

Fark me drunk, this is the most annoying material to get by far...

Try to do the industrial base, and for the life of my I can get up to the final one within 1 minute. By the end, I just want to nuke the base!

Z...

You go up the angled wall to the first one, jump off the roof to the second, then head to the back and scan the third from a dead end corner on the ground. There's a link to a map earlier in this thread somewhere...

So I just scanned all data links in an exploration settlement and received... nothing? Is there a notification as soon as you scan all data links for the materials you gain?

Ok it's the 4th exploration settlement I scan and I still got 0 materials. Nothing :(

EDIT: dammit now I realize I had no more disk space on my ship :x Let's hope this works....

Fun fact: I got a MEF as a mission reward today. That must be a very recent change. I'm still to see more occurrences of that reward type after that, but it's nice to see you can actually get them in other places now.
Now, they just need to do the same with Datamined Wake Exceptions.

Try exploration ones. Since I emptied my data storage I actually got them pretty fast!

Based on my original testing (most of which was done shortly after Engineers launched with the 2.2 patch) the Exploration bases gave the highest MEF drop rates, followed by Industrial and then Scientific. The other advantage of the Exploration bases is that they are probably the quickest and easiest of the bases to scan as well. I usually try to focus on the Exploration bases first but if they are on their two-week reset I will try others as you can still get decent drop rates from all three base types.
