Engineers Meta Alloys -Not for sale?

I just flew to one of the locations closer to the bubble and mined it myself. Lot of them in the systems close to where the CG was in the Pleiades. Just have to use coordinates to get there. I got mine like 400Ly from Gateway.

as a new player, just getting into the game and wanting to do the engineering lark, there is very little in the way of information in game.. as to go where, and do what.
...
Getting meta alloys is now a big pain in the Asp, even more as a new player as Felicity is a good place to start... think FD should give more pro hints?
I've ignored Engineers up till now. I finally decided that I might be interested in trying Engineers, and Felicity Farseer's specialism sounds my thing...

I see she wants meta-alloys, and get this horrible sinking feeling. As far as I can see, Elite Dangerous provides NO in-game way to identify where meta-alloys might be obtained. That's about the worst bit of game design I've seen in Elite Dangerous. If I have to cheat & use information obtained by other players, and access it from outside the game, that is cheating as far as I am concerned. And also "immersion breaking". So yes, FDev should fix the game, and provide some sensible way of finding out about meta-alloys.

The second thing that's putting me off trying Engineers is that (it appears that) I'm now expected to travel 430 Ly (about 40 86 jumps) to get there (and the same back), and even when I get there, going by this thread, it seems that I'll have to spend ages trying to find those extremely rare barnacles (which the game ALSO fails to give you any way to know where they are on planets, and even lacks the mechanisms for other players to easily tell you where to find them, aka Lat/Long coords).

The third thing that's putting me off Engineers is that I'm worried this isn't a one-off thing, and that every time I want to USE Felicity Farseer she will ask for more meta-alloys. No idea if this is true, but it's a worry. I might be prepared to make a 430Ly trip once, but not on a regular basis.

not true. the commodity market description gives all information you need, and than there is galnet. barnacles and meta-alloys have been found before it was possible to google where.

I like to pretend my CMDR is doing the googling. The internet is a fast way to gather and share info now, why not 1000 years from now?

What are you flying? What is your credit situation like? Because 10 LY jump range suggests either something early, or a heavy tank build. If the case is the former (early ships), my recommendation is invest time building up to a ship you are going to spend a lot more time in. Something like the Asp, or Cobra MKIII even. They can be set up to jump pretty comfortable distance stock to get the engineering process started. With ships like the Sidey, Eagle, Adder, Hauler, it would be a much bigger upgrade to get into a Cobra for multi-role than to upgrade any 1 of those ships.

If you can afford a heavy tank build, then my answer is to build a second ship specifically do the engineers with (gathering and unlocking wise) with making it easier in mind.

Actually, here are coords for a double alloy barnacle site (meaning 4, not 2) from a helpful fellow's post in another thread, thanks go to him:
Barnacle with Arsenic and Cadmium
Pleiades Sector LN-S B4-3
C 3
LAT/LONG -13.1651, -54.358

Take a disco scanner and also scan the barnacle so it appears as a permanent POI on your hud for when you come back at a later point.

Process is:

Shoot all the spikes
Hoover up what you need
Log out
Log back in
Repeat

Note that its RNG as to whether you get arsenic, however, these spikes will drop it at some point (its far quicker than bumbling around in an SRV looking for rocks).

No its just the once.

Additional places to google are Orrere and Dav's Hope

I think I've said this before: Park outside station. In chat type "Anyone know where you get meta-alloys?"

I checked on eddb and it said Maia, I had read this but the site said an hour ago do I took the risk and 24 jumps later a quantity of 1 for 100k was mine.

So some one can tell me ?
we gone to maia station with my friend, my market screen not show up meta alloy, but he can see. also he can see more items there, i cant see ?
my trade rank elite and i showed engineer page. so what is this ? wehy meta allow disable for me ?

Wow, Easter is way behind us but still ancient stuff is getting resurrected. 3 years? Way to bump, dude!

If I read your pics right, one of you is at Obsidian, which doesn't stock meta-alloy, while the other is at Darnielle's, which does.
Might this be why only one of you can see 'em?

I prefer to farm them myself, even though that hacks the FarGods off....
