Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Yeah, next week I'll buy T.Flight hotas (I resisted buying one for Elite for years), and quite possibly will get the premium deluxe version too. Plus the aforementioned Reverb G2.

I long wanted an excuse to get into flight sims... :)
Spring a bit more cash into a t16000m joystick and throttle. Don't get the pedals, they are atrociously uncomfortable. You will thank us later.

Bit more is more than double. Not the single item, but the investment incl. new VR, the game, etc. starts to get sizeable. :)
Is it really a must?
You'd likely never regret the purchase... T-16 or X52 or the like. I've certainly never regretted buying my old X52, even though I now use an X56 :)

Anybody know what the basic install size for this is? I'm talking about the initial "ready to play" files, not all the extra world data that is cached.

I wonder what the download size will be. Obviously it will be smaller due to compression, but by how much? It's the process of downloading this bad boy that I find daunting. It might take me until Christmas!

If you're using steam, they have tremendous download speeds, as long as your connection speed allows it.

Something that size...roughly 90Gb at best guess... will take me the better part of an entire day to download with my net connection, especially from the MS store. My connection is very stable, low latency but slow. I'll just leave my PC downloading as I usually do when I'm asleep or working...Modern warfare at a whopping 155Gb took 2 days.

It's not a "must" but you said you wanted an excuse to get into the flightsims. TFlight X will not be enough for the likes of DCS for example. For Elite, I was able to use TFlightX it just fine:
(scroll past the wheel ;) )

but using a t16 is much much better:

In my opinion, taking into account the size of your total investement and being your first steps into HOTAS, I'd say:

1 - If you want to use it just for MSFS2020, you should keep your decision to buy the T. Flight Hotas. In my past experience with similar games like X-Plane you don't really need many buttons for 95% of flight, and the T Flight Hotas wil be enough for all the "1st need" bindings, You will need to use the keyboard for stuff like navigation, comms etc. But that will likely only be a problem if you're using VR, which will be unsupported at launch (I think).
Meanwhile you can also use the mouse to click on the cockpit buttons directly for things that you rarely use (like closing the canopy or toggling lights etc). IMO, if it's just for MSFS, you should keep your choice. You can always upgrade at a later time if you wish, and with "hands on" experience you will have a better picture of what you really want/need and why.

2 - If you want to use it also for ED (or military flight sims), You are going to miss buttons / toggles / switches and most especially the many extra analog axis that other HOTAS provide and IMO you should get a hotas with a lot more buttons / hats / analog axis.

So the key difference is the button layout? I.e. the mechanical robustness and feeling is similar?

Having used mostly mid-low range steering wheels with some experience with high-end ones, I always felt like more expensive items were much more overpriced than the extra experience they provided, yet almost equally prone to breaking down*. Sure, in steering wheel the force feedback quality is also there, but with hotas that's not an issue. Also, I prefer these gadgets to have smaller footprint on the desk.
*At least My friend's TS500 had issues and I think he made DIY upgrades like better ventilation for the FF motor.

Especially as I'm planning to use it for SW Squadrons, but afraid of the excessive wear and tear while playing that one. And while it's OK if the cheaper one gets written down in a year, I would be slightly upset if it happened with the more expensive one.

When it comes to buttons, I'm OK to map some of them to the KB. Also, I wonder if in VR there will be an implementation of in-cockpit touch buttons.

Thanks, yeah, that was my thinking too.
Also, for the best experience It would be great to have touch controls in cockpit. Especially with G2 Reverb inside-out tracking, finally the device won't lose track what I'm doing reaching down for controls below the desk - I had this issue when trying the Mustang in DCS with touch controls (just tried it, not a DCS player). The real win would be to have a solution for the stick and thrust control, a fixed slot in which we can put the touch controls in.

No, the T16000 is much more precise and it uses the same Hall sensors which are used in Thrustmaster Warthog. The difference is obvious. The stick also has a nice centering spring and has a much better feel than the entry level TflightX.

As for button layout, it's not that important in Elite which is as fast as molten lava flow. It however is important in DCS when taking hands off the stick is outta the question and you need to multitask. Things happen pretty fast during carrier landings for example. No time to go to the mouse to click buttons or fumble with the keyboard. Deployment of laser guided Mavericks is also a juggle between two screens and you need another joystick on the throttle to slew the targeting cursor of the seeker's head for example.

As for build of the T16000, the stick itself seems pretty robust. The TflightX developed a little drift to the left after all the years, but it's nothing unmanageable, just added a bit of dead zone in ed. No problems on the T16000 so far.

The throttle is nice, however it needs greasing with something because it's a bit "clingy". And my slew sensor on the throttle developed a slight left drift not dissimilar to the TflightX. They probably use the same parts 😂.

Also from a friend who has a Warthog I heard good things about Thrustmaster support. They allow self repairs under warranty provided you contact them first, so you don't have to send the whole stick back.

Also, some video reviews:

And finally:

Look at it this way - you're gonna buy it later anyway 😂 Or maybe something even more crazy like the warthog so that's a consideration factor too.

His Reverb and WMR in general will be supported in a free update this Fall:
VR SUPPORT COMING TO MSFS

We are excited about the reception that Microsoft Flight Simulator has received from the community and look forward to its launch on August 18th. Today, we announced Microsoft Flight Simulator will support VR platforms beginning fall 2020 as a free update. VR support for Microsoft Flight Simulator will coincide with the HP Reverb G2 this fall. VR support will be available on all Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets upon VR launch. Support for additional platforms/headsets will follow. Stay tuned for future updates.

Oh dear, you're not making it easy for me... :)
Will watch the videos!

Yeah, made a lucky call there early July, hopefully I'll get it from the first production batch.

Just checked OA's new graphics settings video, and as suspected medium terrain looks OK with the exception of LOD pop-ins - the real deal are the clouds and lighting starting from high, but medium terrain and high clouds in 4k 90fps VR won't happen with my 1080ti, nor any other current GPU for that matter.
See, this is why I'm concerned about the hole I'm digging myself into, this is getting expensive pretty quickly. :)

(As a sidenote, OA is now making much more FS videos. He released one for Elite and FS each in the past 15 hours, yet the FS video has 3x as much views even though OA is not as well known in the flight sim community... the writing is on the wall :)
