Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Next question - what is the best flight simulator forum to ask my previous questions (and discuss FS2020 in general)? Obviously a sub-thread on the Elite Dangerous forum isn't the best place to get the answers I'm looking for now and in the future. The two forums that come to mind are www.flightsim.com and www.avsim.com. I don't want to have to manage a dozen forums, so if I were to pick just one, is there a clear winner?

Can't really say which one is the best, but I guess MSFS2020 official forum might be a good place to start: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/

Broke down and pre-ordered a Reverb G2 today. Been quite happy with the Index over the past year, but I'm going to twitch for months if I can't play this for a while after they add VR support. Their gambit worked!

HCS needs to give Bill another call for a second Flight Simulator VoiceAttack pack.

I also have the G2 on preorder, but my concern is that my GPU (1080ti) will be pretty far from running this on adequate settings - it is 4k 90fps we are speaking about. The only realistic chance is to gof for half resulotion...
Surely the obvious solution is to buy a new gen GPU, but all rumors suggest the 30xx series will milk the market before AMD arrives with RDNA2 - then I expect nVidia to launch a 30xx Super series that will be OK value for money... which will be what, Q1 next year at best?

Does anyone know if there is a way to enable the possibility of malfunctions? I know we can start several types of malfunctions manually or set a timer for them to occur, but it loses all the fun, and removes the troubleshooting part, if I already know it's coming.

You can turn them on without the timer? At least that's how I percieved it.
Tonight I will try to bypass the suggested weather bug - allegedly by choosing custom weather then setting it live makes wind behave properly.

I should have mentioned that it is well worth while (in my mind essential) to be registered at both AVSIM and Flightsim.com so as to have access to the download libraries of both. Fair enough there is little freeware (for MSFS 2020) at the moment, you can bet that there will be lots to come and many enthusiast authors prefer one site for their files over the other.

That's what I thought at first too, but if you turn them on without the timer, what actually happens is that you will start the flight with all the malfunctions already occurring. I must admit it was quite hilarious when I tried :D

Meanwhile Ian Skippy already gave a suggestion on how to achieve my intended result:

In the malfunction screen turn them all on, arm them all, and set them from 0-x minutes. This means it is random, and the higher X is the lower the odds of it happening. So 0-60 means it WILL happen within an hour. 0If you fly one hour every day, setting it to 0-43800 means it will malfunction randomly once every year or so.

Oh, and finally I tried a new plane, I chose the DA40 NG. Very nice plane with much better visibility and easy startup compared to the C172, but It seems to be pretty heavy on fuel, at least it appears much more difficult doing hypermiling than with the C172 - will try again with the next flight.

Also, it has a funny quirk that the engine sips only from the left fuel tank, and before the plane gets too imbalanced, fuel from the right wing has to be pumped to the left. :D

Yeah, it is intended for setting up specific scenarios, like start 10k from Airfield X at 3000ft with a burning engine or whatever. And if anyone is going for random failures it wont hurt to practice a bit with them so it isnt just instant death. :p

It's great having the entire world to visit. But it's also the entire world, and it's easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of awesome places you could visit... where do you start once you've done your home area & various holiday locations?

This site might be useful to some.

I'm still pootling around the UK, and decided last night to break my rule of only going to places I can fly to (in a GA - an amazingly poor decision it turns out) - so decided to plop myself in the middle of Algeria, in the Icon 5, just to see if the Sahara looked any good...

I landed in a valley and turned the engine off and watched the sunset.

man, loving this sim!

I'm doing the Patagonia Bush Flying challenge. Done 6 legs so far and on the last one I had an Oil Pressure failure and had to land on the sandy shore of a lake. I turned everything off in the plane and gradually turned everything back on and the engine sprang into life. Managed to complete the leg (all 1hr 40 minutes) without having to go back and restart! Phew...

Are you talking about our avatar? Because my avatar is a macho man. A macho man with a cute girl's voice...

This is the issue I have as well. My avatar is male but my pilot's ATC voice is female for some odd reason, and I can't find a way to change it.

And it's annoying me greatly!!!!

I expect anything that depends too much on vertical detail won't be rendered in any way that does it justice based on satellite images, so things like arches or waterfalls are definitively out for the most part in terms of fine detail.

But anything a bit more expansive is still for the most part breathtaking.

Take for instance the Bromo Tengger Semeru national park in Indonesia, one of the world's many, many, many absolutely spectacular places that (almost) nobody ever heard about: https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/destinations/java/bromo-tengger-semeru-national-park

Flew over it in the game, as while some finer details are not mirrored, for the most part it was still mighty impressive, and light years ahead of anything else on the market:

Agreed.

But, as I'm patiently waiting for the VR version... stop tempting me with those gorgeous images! :D

If you figure it out, tag me with the answer please! BTW, I'm forced to use Windows Offline mode for ATC, but i set my text-to-speech voice to a male one and it didn't change anything. Strange thing is that the voices I hear in FS don't sound like any of my TTS voices I've installed on Windows.. 🤷

The landscapes in this game can be incredible. I've never seen anything like this in a game. Pretty cool. (This is California).

I can't get the Manual Cache to do anything, though.

I painted the region I wanted, and I could see lots of new detail when I was painting, but when I fly over it I just see the same old stuff, with none of the more recent buildings.

So the new data IS there, on Bing, but it's not coming into my game even if I manually scan it.

See that's just so odd you say this, as my FS mirrors exactly what I see when I go to Bing Maps, but my Bing Maps is a Frankenstein's monster of stitched together seasons and quality and time-of-day and dates (how old the photos are). It's really frustrating and surprising, because both my Google and Apple maps are lightyears ahead of Bing in my neck of the world. It kinda baffles me that the Mighty Microsoft has produced such a rubbish product in Bing... :(

I just cross my fingers that they spent some of their big $$$ to fly a plane over recently and are now processing new cloud-free and snow-free, up-to-date imagery for their map service. Either that or just license the maps from Google :p

ps - for now on I'm previewing any area I wish to visit using Bing before I fly there to avoid disappointment.

Yes that would be nice :)

I did finally get the stuff to update in-game for me. I'm not sure what I did. Maybe I just needed to restart the game, or wait.

Anyway, it did update to more recent stuff. A new flyover shows much better detail, my house looks like a house instead of a mushroom, and the new shopping center is there now. Really, it looks pretty decent. Some of the buildings are replaced with other types, but they look similar.

Not sure if posted already but community is uploading freeware stuff already:

Very useful little plugin that display your position on google map in flight. The site has also few other freewares.

TFW you use your new fancy sim to promote Bing and just a week in, players roll out a Google Maps plugin. 😂

Oh boy... here I was proud of myself being able to land the propeller planes easy peasy...

Thought I'd try the Cessna Citation Longitude (very slick plane, inside and out) and fly from the Big Island in Hawaii to Honolulu.

First attempt - overstressed the plane fiddling with the AP and overspeeding
Second attempt - completely misjudged the approach into Honolulu (it was pretty dark to be fair lol) and "landed" in some trees somewhat prior to the runway.

Lots to learn still... maybe I should graduate to the Turboprops first before attempting jets. The dusky flight was very atmospheric though, even having the plane on autopilot I kept checking out the external camera, and took in the Milky Way, this time remaining on Sol;)

Have got to say, not doing anything in MSFS simply going from A to B is still a good bit better compared to Elite... there's actual stuff to see (and I realise space is empty etc. but still, I sometimes spend more time being alt-tabbed out of Elite than I actively play it).

Brilliant, been trying to use GoogleMaps on a second screen to trace my flight and pick out the towns and POI's en-route, this is ideal!

Thanks for the headsup!
