I wonder if anyone will eventually manage to replace Bing maps with Google earth...that would be a turn up for the better :)
Unless the AI gets much better at interpreting and tesselating the data and modeling land elevation, it won't really matter which map do they use. Google's biggest strength is the streetview and the accuracy of human agglomerations, but that aside, 98% of the globe has a comparable levels of accuracy.

You'd see the same jagged steps in terrain and crappy trees even if they used a sattelite map with 1/4 inch resolution. ;)

From about 1500ft up, the Earth looks spectacular even as it is. Below that... well, the tech is not there, yet, I can't even blame them. (not counting the hand-crafted downloadable areas, of course. You could make it epic all the way to the grains of sand on a sandbar if you had enough space on your SSD)

Yes, cities aside, what we have is superior to Google Maps with its tree placement and whatnot.
With the exception of the 3/225 wind bug, I'm very happy with the sim - I wanted scenic atmospheric flight with weather for long now, and it got delivered from an unlikely angle albeit only with a single (highly detailed) planet. :)

Flying at night is an absolute delight.

Oh boy... here I was proud of myself being able to land the propeller planes easy peasy...

Thought I'd try the Cessna Citation Longitude (very slick plane, inside and out) and fly from the Big Island in Hawaii to Honolulu.

First attempt - overstressed the plane fiddling with the AP and overspeeding
Second attempt - completely misjudged the approach into Honolulu (it was pretty dark to be fair lol) and "landed" in some trees somewhat prior to the runway.

Lots to learn still... maybe I should graduate to the Turboprops first before attempting jets. The dusky flight was very atmospheric though, even having the plane on autopilot I kept checking out the external camera, and took in the Milky Way, this time remaining on Sol;)

Have got to say, not doing anything in MSFS simply going from A to B is still a good bit better compared to Elite... there's actual stuff to see (and I realise space is empty etc. but still, I sometimes spend more time being alt-tabbed out of Elite than I actively play it).
This is why one stays in the 172. :)

I wonder why some people are experiencing this 3 knot wind issue. The other day I was being blown about by gusting winds at my local airfield - it was precisely what I had at home - 3 miles away. (The clouds were also very close to what I could actually see.)

I'm going through the 2 day purgatory of downloading it again...might be finished by the time a patch is released :D

This time, I'm staying away from my islands...I'll go to Morocco...Borneo... anywhere that isn't here until Bing maps sorts it's shyte out :)
Yeah I had to leave home as well thanks to Frankenstein Bing Maps. I'm flying over some places I vacation at, so I can still say, "Hey, I know that place!" while taking advantage of better aerial photography (there are a few places where BM is actually okay).

I had a strange...if rather macabre idea... to visit Brunei where I did my jungle training many years ago...have a safe look at the place from the air where I first discovered leeches can almost magically get inside clothing and attach themselves to various appendages...I still have the scars :D

I'm doing the Patagonia Bush Flying challenge. Done 6 legs so far and on the last one I had an Oil Pressure failure and had to land on the sandy shore of a lake. I turned everything off in the plane and gradually turned everything back on and the engine sprang into life. Managed to complete the leg (all 1hr 40 minutes) without having to go back and restart! Phew...View attachment 185288View attachment 185292

I am doing the Balkan one, and discovered a bug: refueling is disabled by accident and you can't do the whole tour on one tank. There is a keybind that allows you to give yourself more fuel whenever you want, and it currently is the only way to complete these trips. I only use it on airstrips with fuel capabilities though. :)

Apologies for my misunderstanding regarding patch release....

It seems that in fact the patch is not due on the 27th August but that:

"The team is currently working hard to provide a patch update to address issues that have been recently reported. Expect a release date for the patch in our August 27th update."

(from https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/581339-august-20th-2020-development-update/ )

So, my misunderstanding of what I read elsewhere. Sorry.

Also - just finished a flight in New Zealand and live weather seemed fine there. Reading around it seems that it is the USA weather that has this 3kt bug?

Thanks for the tip. I did the first leg of that last night. I think it is the same for Patagonia. I will need to refuel ASAP.

Yeah... I think my biggest problem with jets is the huge difference in airspeed and throttle control (I don't have a HOTAS). So basically overspeeding after take-off, and stalling during approach as I slow down too much, too early (which caused the crash last night). Need more practice and maybe read up on the various speeds one needs to follow during these procedures.

Hope you'll have better luck this time around!

Very useful little plugin that display your position on google map in flight. The site has also few other freewares.
I want an app for my iPad that mimics the official app that I see RL pilots use all the time, but connected to MSFS instead of the actual plane. Hopefully such a "game" app won't cost anywhere as much as the real thing, however!
