Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Well, between XP11, P3D and DCS, there are plenty of good flight models out there already (and some dodgy ones, obviously). So it's no wonder the sales pitch focuses on the visuals as that's the main feature upgrade, and the only thing 99% of gamers care about. It's also the only thing most gaming websites previewing it are qualified to comment on. :D

Even if it comes out flawed, it's not the end of the world imho. The game pass access will make it a fantastic introductory window into the hobby for so many kids and teenagers that I can only see it as a net positive even if it turned out to be just a fancy MS Flight. And you don't need perfection to make it a useful learning tool: I learned VOR navigation as a kid playing Flight Simulator 2 on my Apple //c for example...

I don't think it has to be perfect either, or even the best, IMO it just has to be "good enough" to feel plausible to be a major success.

I was just asking how it compared to other flight sims, because nobody who actually got to try it had ever said anything about it (perhaps because they can't due to NDAs). Given that FS2020 is, in fact, a flight simulator (hence the name), it's not at all unreasonable to be interested in how good it is as a flight sim.

I think it's main success will be measured in it's accessability...catering for those who might well be put off with the likes of DCS and indeed some of MSFS 2020's predecessors... of being thrust into living a virtual life almost as a real life pilot to get any benefit or joy out of it....a 'proper' flight sim for the unwashed masses just like me as it were.

Don't get me wrong here, I've spent many hundreds of hours with the IL2 Great Battles series flying WW1 and WW2 aircraft on realistic flight modes...but I'm no simhead, preferring to set the cockpit level of realism to my own 'halfway' tastes rather than be intimidated or repelled by an array of mouse clicking on buttons and switches through some almost perverted attention to detail I'll never quite understand or feel the need for.

I suspect I'll treat MFS 2020 just the same... :)

OH MY GOD, watch this multiplayer video from the preview build!

This is going to be a bush flying multiplayer DREAM!!!! Group play, friend invites, exploring the virtual Earth together, I mean WOW:

I thought initially that they were playing on an Xbox with his mention of Xbox gamertags....must just be a Microsoft account thing.

Truly fantastic video, the weather effects alone are a wet dream.

I'm an Alpha and Beta Tester of MSFS. I have pre-ordered. Graphically it is stunning. The Beta build is a few behind what Asobo are using to show off so we still have some issues with some aircraft flight models. Nothing too drastic but enough to have a few concerns.

The NDA is strong and the watermarking is all over the screen, no grabs, no vids, etc. Not that I would anyway. That's all I'm saying. ;-)

Yeah, next week I'll buy T.Flight hotas (I resisted buying one for Elite for years), and quite possibly will get the premium deluxe version too. Plus the aforementioned Reverb G2.

Looks like all the budget went into the Reverb, uh?

(I love T.Flights btw, currently on my second one)

I long wanted an excuse to get into flight sims... :)
If your budget would run to it, I'd suggest a HOTAS with more functionality than the T-flight...X52 pro-flight or T-16 would be better options all round. The T-flights are fairly decent as an entry level but are prone to developing faults like drift pretty regularly. It all depends on how much you're likely to use a HOTAS in the end...if you don't play a lot of flying games or sims it's perfectly good for what it is..

Indeed, budget allowing I'd go for a T.16000 FCS in a heartbeat....it's actually a candidate for my next one after "T.Flight the 2nd" gives up the ghost.

Also @Mole HD , what you said above on "casual simming", word for word. Screw complex engine management, just give me a good aerodynamic model, a pair of 20mm cannons and convergence at 300m. :)

As for my T.Flight experience; first one was a standard PC unit (red stripes): a deadzone you could invite friends and have a party into, but it worked flawlessly through horrible abuse (Buckyball, Speedbowl, circumnavigations, you name it)...replaced because of two switches on the throttle totally weared away (SRV boost...).
My current one is the PS4 version (blue stripes): a bit more expensive, widely better deadzone (I didn't even have to tweak curves with it, just good out of the box), but indeed it started developing pots issues after only a few months. I have to open it up and clean it every few weeks and it'll work flawlessly again...for a while.

I was concerned that my net connection would limit the experience of MFS 2020 for me...seemingly not. Just watched a few vids from a guy in New Zealand with a 3mbps down and 1mbps up connection flying in the sim and it was perfectly acceptable...stunning even considering that's less than a third of the net connection speeds I have currently.

Had a sneak peek on Bing maps...and my farm is there... my wife's Land Rover outside in the drive and washing on the line...whether or not it'll be modelled in the sim, I've no idea...but it's there on the map at that level of detail...minus my cows in the fields. I guess Bing maps doesn't like stuff that moves :D

Bing doesn't do a street view up here in the frozen north unlike Google...but the data from Google maps streetview is several years old in any case. The image from Google maps doesn't show the cow shed I built 2 years ago... Bing does ;)

That's great news for my limping 10-30 Mbps home connection! If only I could play it at work...yesterday we upgraded to optical, 940 down, 250 up, and I admit I teared up a little.

Also, it's not that Bing doesn't like stuff that moves. Bing is afraid of your cows.
