Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

My area recently got cable broadband so if I were still on copper broadband it would take me a good few days to download it.

Anyone who has slow BB has nothing but my sympathy.

One of the few really nice things here in Portugal is the internet. I've got 500 mbps download.

edit: not that it actually matters in this case, Microsoft's downloader doesn't go anywhere near this...

It's been a rough ride so far, been on/off and had to alt+tab out, but it crashed three times so far.
Tried the tutorial, but for some reason pressing '2' as instructed did not reset the camera so I could not proceed.

7700k/1080ti running high preset (clouds ultra, ambient occlussion and volumetric effects at medium) with good framerates.

Left it running overnight - woke up, and it was all done. Spent half an hour fiddling with the settings etc, and then decided to just fly to Arbroath (my home town). It has an airport! News to me... but there is an old marine base on the outskirts, so maybe they've just translated the wee airfield to being an "airport". Anyway, took off, immediately crashed into the terminal, decided I'd seen enough. :ROFLMAO:

Bought the damn thing on Steam. Full premium super-duper whizzbang deluxe version. Why? I've been watching quite a lot of videos the past few days (hasn't everyone?) and I just love the 787. Need the full thing to fly that. Their inbuilt marketplace is charging £25 for a single wee aircraft... and yeah, sod that. Cheaper to buy the premium deluxe and you get 10 of them, including the 787.

Now (after a bit of kaffuffle uninstalling the old version & getting the Steam version to recognise that, yes, it needs to find the data again & not show me the Blue Bar Of Death) I'm re-installing it, which it'll do in the background today while I'm working. Might get a bit of a play by lunchtime.

Noticed the data folder it downloads has two parent folders: Community (which is empty initially), and Official, which contains the 91GB downloaded files. So it looks like there is a place to put 3rd party mods. Also noticed there's a developer mode and menu from within the game.

Anyway, fly safe pilots & enjoy our planet. I certainly intend to. If anyone wants to add/look for me in-game, my handle is 'StockportJambo'.

Given that this morning is already allocated to hospital hell I'm starting to consider leaving loading this until later in the week when a) things have calmed down a it and b) the first patch is out.

(Being realistic, I fully expect this good intention to last until around 4pm today......)

Ctrl+Space resets the camera I believe. From memory of one of Squirrel's videos. Still downloading so can't test. If you have a numpad, with Num-Lock on, pressing '5' will also do it.

Downloaded and installed yesterday. Everyone running Nvidia cards should do the same.

There are a good few discrepancies reported with airports. Still downloading so can't tell which ones are genuine and which ones are a case of someone missing an entry somewhere, but for example I saw reports of no airfield in Antarctica (weird as I seem to remember a video showcasing the continent) and various airports missing altogether like Malaga, Eindhoven, Weeze, Stuttgart. Funny thing is, for Malaga for example, the satellite image gets the runway layout printed on the ground, as part of the grassy land:

Have banned everyone else in the house from Streaming/Gaming/downloading in fact NO BLOODY INTERNET at all!! I am not one of lucky ones who get over a 100 down, i am stuck in the dark ages of the ignored BT Fibre people and only manage a paltry 15 down.

Started at 05:00 Uk time, and currently (09:30) i am 15Gb into the download, which means a long day and part night waiting.

That just looks like a bog-standard bug to me. The sort of thing that will get fixed pretty quickly I would think. 🤷‍♀️

As for Antarctica, I've also seen videos showing it, but also highlighting its problems... mainly due to lack of data. It may be they've just removed the airfields for now while it's sorted out. There's a world update coming in the next couple of weeks I believe.

I guess with the full release that there are going to be a myriad of errors spotted, hopefully most are small and/or parochial, better yet though, let's hope some are downright hilarious!

Me too. I've seen one video with a floating house 1,000ft up. :ROFLMAO:

My install is now at 88GB after an hour of downloading. Most of the time / delay seems to be the decompression of the files rather than internet bandwidth. I have it installed on an NVMe 4.0 drive, and I think that is making a big difference.

Hopefully the antartica airfield gets added in a future patch, visiting Mount Erebus volcano was high on my tour list but I'm not flying all the way from australia to get there :D.

There's a big content patch due in a couple weeks, probably to sort out many of the initial release issues.

With the tools they showcased, it shouldn't take them long to manually add missing airports yeah. I find it a bit puzzling though, as it seems like a pretty simple unit testing routine: for (c in ICAO codes) { does c appear in dropdown selection? }

Perhaps, but they have a lot on their plate right now I expect, so I'll forgive this.

A bigger deal though is that having paid for the Premium Deluxe on Steam, only the Standard content is actually available. Looks like many others are in the same boat. I hope that one gets sorted ASAP. :cautious:

Edit: The devs are on the case.

If someone wants to fly to some natural wonder / city / etc but doesn't know what the nearest airfield/airport, you can simply open google maps and type in the searchbox "nearest airport to [your desired destination here]".

For instance, typing "nearest airport to Mount Tambora" will open the map with pins on Mount Tambora and the nearest airfields (only 1 airport in this case): https://www.google.com/maps/search/....3625575,117.5691479,61112m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1

I realized it refers to a button on the hotas! Did some tutorials, 3rd landing was already pretty smooth. Flying all set to real, so considering the good start wanted to fly out from my local small airport, but the Cessna 172's engine stalls upon start, don't know why. It has 90% fuel mixture (ruled it out as it did the same with auto mixture), oddly at startup the fuel pump is off, but turning it on doesn't help either, and so far I haven't found any switch that could relate to it. Battery also on, and anyway, if I begin with engine running, why it stalls? Unless it does because I set failures on?

Anyway, very engaging stuff, this will be a great journey!
