Mines....Yes they do work.

Recently I have spent a lot of my time building up trade routes in and around my 'home' system. I fly my trusty T9 which feels like it's a sitting duck to any pirates who take a liking to my cargo, So I run with shields and carry mines as a last resort. Most of my runs are quiet and without incident, the occasional interdiction mainly happens when I am decelerating to my final destination....the time I am fixated on the radar. Last night was funny though, I was slowing still in SC and an NPC ship on my radar shot past me so close I heard him in the cockpit, he did a 180 and shot past me again, three times he overshot as I dropped into normal space and docked without incident. I traded my goods and picked up a new cargo, and set off on my way again....20 minutes later I was approaching the same station and I was tethered in an interdiction duel with an NPC.....I eventually broke free and dropped into normal space to dock without further incidents.
This time I took a one way delivery mission, so I was empty when returning to the system...and right on cue...the NPC interdicted me and managed to pull me into normal space..this guy was learning.. I was spinnning with some system damage while this NPC sent me a message 'this will not hurt' :D . Now I knew I made the smart decision to keep my shields, I had 4 pips to engines and 2 pips to shields as I started to run, he had my whole cockpit shaking with constant hits....but he was only wearing down my shields  ...
I felt this NPC was annoyed with me for avoiding him for so many runs, and I was running without cargo...so he was not going to get any bragging rights in the NPC lounge, and I was about to learn how dumb he was. I deployed hard points and dispatched three mines in my wake. Hoping it would slow him enough for me to FSD away, or keep him at bay until the police arrived. Just then I got the message......Bounty awarded 15000 creds for the death of... 'forgot the name' .
I don't know if he ran into the mines, or stopped to scoop them up, but I do know that it only took one to blow him up  as the other two were floating around still...I assume he was in a paper Eagle. SO any traders out there....Mines do work !!!! :D

Thanks for an entertaining NPC encounter FD!!

Excellent, I may have the mines installed as I cant hit anything it seems:)

I wonder if those mines can be scooped and reused by the same player as they could send it the unarm signal . Any commander brave (stupid) enough to try the experiment ;)

Mines do work !!!! :D
Mines are, as far as I can tell, an explosive (though the description says thermal) type, useless against shield but indeed effective against unshielded ships.
For this reason, they are useless against most NPCs, and a joke against other players. :-(

Agreed! I was at a RES yesterday (great instance) and an Anaconda dropped a large amount of them. Flew around hearing them go pop. They did not even register damage to my shields on my HUD.

We need EMP mines to take out the hud and power systems. Now that would be fun.

Hi... what we NEED is the original Elite's "Energy Bomb" here are the spec's straight from Ian Bell's website::D
.
Energy Bomb Specification: Medusa Pandora Self Homing Energy Bomb (available at Tech Level 7 worlds or higher) is a tactical weapon capable of Megazon Destruct Force 13. Has heat radius of 900 km. Developed by Klaus-Kline laboratories for multi- role combat using "launch-and-leave" techniques. Each Energy Bomb can be used only once. It is activated by the TAB key and will destroy ALL other ships, asteroids, and missiles in the vicinity.

will destroy ALL other ships, asteroids, and missiles in the vicinity
Including you? Can't wait to use that and get 1 million combat bonds at a CZ, and lose them instantly upon ejection :p

That would be awesome for the gameplay. I still don't understand what FD had in mind when they decided to nerf the mines. Hopefully PowerPlay will bring some new weapons, and love to the mines.

What we need is for Frontier to remove the nerf to explosives, since the only problem with them, ever, was that you could fire dumbfires too fast. Nerfing all explosive damage to fix the dumbfire fire speed was... dumb.

I'm ok with explosive damage not being that effective against shields (though I think perhaps it has been overdone a bit). I would like there to be multiple warhead types for missiles and mines - one which is explosive is fine - splash damage, good vs hull etc etc. One which is anti-shield though would also be great (not sure what you would call it, but some in-lore tech could be invented I'm sure).

And torpedo warheads should be the equivalent of shaped charges - the sort of things you mainly use vs capital ships, but possibly against larger ships like anacondas because they have enough armour on them to survive several point defence hits.

Mines were a viable trader defense option before they were nerfed. I scored numerous NPC kills with them, and even took out a CMDR on one occasion. Post nerf, sadly, mine launchers are naught but dead weight.

Tell that to the T9 player full of palladium that tried to use them on my asp, they're useless against shields.

are the "seeker" mines also useless? from the larger mine launcher?
and if they are gimped by nerf then that needs fixed
OR
a new class of mines, for Large hard points maybe, "stealth" mines, only picked up by higher grade scanners (scanners need to be made worthwile!) that seek and do equal damage to shield and hull
they did have NAVAL missiles in Frontier, harder to get, expansive, had to have high class jammer to stop them, much harder to avoid and did a lot of damage
~
I always run with at least 1 point defence weapon installed in the best fire arc for my type of ship and role, like on an Asp, above the cockpit if bounty hunting, for example, as many missiles will be launched head on, or mines if chasing.
