Mining is becoming a joke

So do pirates attack you if you only have limpets, or not? I read somewhere that they recently changed it so that they won't, except My Type-7 just got interdicted by a Viper MkIV NPC that instantly opened up on me and nearly shredded me. Had just left a station to do some mining.

I've always liked mining as a relaxing way to earn money with little risk, but that experience just now was ridiculous. Shot at me for approximately 10 seconds and dropped my hull down to 60%.

No, it was a joke before, that you could circumvent the threat of pirates so easily by just going to a non-extraction zone part of it.

Pirates in the rings, RES and Nav beacons will ignore you if all you have is limpets in the hold. But I'm not certain about the pirates that interdict you.

I think the spawn mechanic is too broken to risk mining in a T7 or T9. They don't have the speed to escape if things do get nasty, and all it takes for this to happen is needing to log out because of RL, or having the game crash while you are in a ring.

Solutions to all these problems.

Have Teamsters do you mining for you. You bring us Palladium we give you the ore you need for mining missions, we profit, we boost our BGS influence, you profit, you boost your rep with wherever you take your ore we mined. Yes this is legit. Information found here. https://discord.gg/Jk5bQyS

You can also join our wing and mine with us, or become a combat escort or mining escort or request a mining escort. Here is our wing thread... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/276559-Teamsters-Logistics-Corporation

I'm at work now, but will test it out some more when I get home. The more surprising thing to me was how fast that Viper MkIV shredded me. I haven't played in some time, just now coming back to the game, and I've never taken that much damage that quickly in my Type-7. I had a couple point defenses, maybe he just got a lucky rocket in, who knows.

The T7 is the best ship for mining available to me right now. As it stands, I own an FAS, a Cobra fitted for jump distance as a taxi, and the T7 I just re-bought and outfitted for mining. My fiances are starting to get low again after doing a bunch of outfitting for my FAS, I'm down to about 8mil, and my rebuy cost for my FAS is 1.8mil. I want more of a safety net. The plan was to just mine for a week or so since I actually like it. So now I don't know what to do. I guess I'm just going to have to try to be really careful when going from the ring back to the station.

Fiddling with my mining ship build at work. By switching some things around and spending just a little bit more money, it should be more durable and be able to run better now. I had my 4C Refinery in a [5] slot, so by switching it down I can run a much more decent shield. I'll make some upgrades to the thrusters as well.

That build only gives you 3 active limpets, so you will have a fair bit of waiting around for them to collect. You should drop the hangar and put in a 3A collector controller as well.
Swap your shield generator for a biweave. It isn't quite as strong, but regenerates much faster.

Well the idea is for this ship to be my resource gathering ship. Hence the SRV bay. And if I'm ever shot at, I need the shield to take as much damage as possible so I can run. Really, if my shield goes down and I'm still being attacked, I'll be dead long before even a bi-weave recharges.

I won't use a 5A collector controller for mining - First of all it's a bad deal because you only get 50% more collectors (3 vs 2), but the module weighs 4 times as much. Second, 2 collectors brings in ore as fast as I can really want to deal with managing in the refinery bins. (I shudder to think of the nightmare of managing the refinery bins with ore coming in from 5 limpets, and I have the luxury model 10 bin 4A refinery.) Finally, the longer controller range is a curse because then limpets will go collect distant junk ore you left behind 3 or 4 asteroids ago. You only really want them collecting the ore that you just chipped off the asteroid right in front of you.

And...get the 4A refinery when you can. More bins is more better.

YMMV etc

I go for the 'A'-rated collectors because they last the longest. And as long as I stay on the refinery, I shouldn't have to worry about them grabbing junk ore too much. I'm on xbox (clarified because I'm about to use button names), so what I generally do is hold RT to fire at the asteroid while staring at my refinery screen. I can mine the ore while simultaneously using the D-Pad to select and jettison bins.

This.

This is basically the secret to undisturbed mining. Boost away as soon as you drop out. Your exiting supercruise leaves a wake and you wanna get away as far as possible before you start mining.

When i have to mine i do THIS and it work's

The other side of this coin, The Good Side, When you are farming engineer Mats from T9 spawn you can micro jump across the asteroid belt checking to see if a T9 spawns at each stop...

No matter where you drop in any random part of a ring or asteroid cluster, it's full of pirates. The numbers of pirates in the galaxy must be staggering. If you dare try mining with just one ton of hard RNG'd engineer commodities that can't be stored, you are wasting your time as every pirate in existence knows about and wants your massive haul.
Even running for five minutes at 500m/s doesn't seem to help at the moment. As soon as you stop, two minutes later a pirate appears.

You don't know how to pick up your mining spots. I've been mining for a very long time, including last versions, and I have rarely had any problems with pirates.
By the way, if you get a good combat reputation, the pirate may think it's a better idea to let you alone.

Not all the time it doesn't. I had a Conda follow me for 20 minutes. He had already interdicted me twice, plus I had dropped him into the ring before I dropped down. My Orca can cruise at 400 and boost over 500m/s, so leaving ships behind isn't hard. But this Conda just kept coming after me. After several interrupted attempts to start mining, I gave up and headed back to the station. The Conda chased me again in SC, but I made it to the station OK. When I left the station the Conda was still fighting the cops. So I joined in with my mining lasers: Look what I mined!.

Yes if it's a tail of any kind from a interdiction they will usually keep following you anywhere in that system.
I just meant to escape spawns when doping into a asteroid field clean of followers.
The Keelback may be a interesting option once it gets it's fighter option, depending on how much space this will consume.

I've known this tactic all along. It isn't the point of this thread. It shouldn't be necessary to have to run as soon as you drop into a ring, this is just a workaround for an awful game mechanic. The area of a gas giant ring is enormous, even if there were millions of other miners there is next to zero chance of any other ships being in a random part of the ring. Yet there are several every time. My Orca can run, so can my Clipper and after tonight so can my Python, but other ships aren't so lucky.
