Mining ships - Very Limited Choice - 4+ Hardpoints Minimum

Just looking at the Mining Requirements, I was thinking that it really does effect your options for an effective miner!

Firstly you need 4 Hardpoints for the mining tools (Mining Laser, Abrasion Blaster, Sub-surface Displacement Missile and Seismic Charge Warheads)

Then you will need some offensive weapons to get them pesky pirates off all that loot you have dug up!

I think 3 Hardpoints as a minimum - Maybe a SLF bay too to keep them off ya tasty cargo!

This leaves the following mining options
Federal Gunship - ?
Imperial Cutter
Alliance Challenger
Federal Corvette
Anaconda
Type-10 Defender

I was going to make a python build, but with only 1 offensive weapon... nah! [where is it]

Hmmm - Maybe we really do need a dedicated miner?

Thoughts?

Thoughts: you can mine as you do now so minimum of mining laser, refinery and cargo slots, all the other modules listed are optional. The more of the optional ones fitted the more efficient the mining. The new tools do not prevent you mining in smaller ships, just give you more options to consider in bigger ones.

You really don't need offensive weapons as a miner, never have. If they change that and make mining in the bubble all about Combat, then I'll stick to mining outside of the bubble.

Edit, did you all sit and mine in a Haz Rez? If so, why? On the trip back to base, use the same evasive techniques as a regular hauler, fly the easy interdict mini game, or just submit and escape as normal. No need to make life hard for yourself with a payload full of precious cargo.

How about letting the mining hardpoints do serious damage but with a short range.

I mean you dont want one of those drills coming at you when your shields are down.

And use the mining beams for taking down shields.

I think people should stop with the attitude of "I should have access to everything, no matter the ship I pick". There should be things only some ships can do well, while others can't.
Having good defences is quite important for a miner.

Hey Conch, do you currently do mining missions? Have you ever had the need to engage in Combat over the last few years?

The other issue with having a larger ship is that they are going to be very sluggish to position yourself for the relevant target on the asteroid, not to mention navigating inside the debris. It feels like it's going to be a balancing act to get manoeuvrability, mining equipment, internal requirements (cargo space etc) on one ship.

I dont do mining missions, but ive mined a ton, especially in anarchy.
As soon as i drop into the ring, i get company that scans me. I prefer they die.

After that its pretty much quiet. But going back to the station with my loot, can give some trouble from time to time.

Errrm, nope - none of my miners have weapons.

Edit: Other than mining lasers, but it seems they'll be coming off soon tomorrow ;)
I guess its personal preferance. When credits are being made, i prefer having some weapons to defend.
Even my trade cutter has all its hardpoints filled.

A DDT5 Conda does the job fine for me, im not too worried about being able to hit the nodes.

Yeah, that is my point to the OP, combat is purely optional as a miner. It is always the same thing in the bubble, an NPC (or wing) will spawn, you run silent and boost away into the rings, they vanish off sensors, then nobody bothers you again. Can appreciate some like to fight, but that is really an option.

There are very nice spots just outside the bubble (HYADUM is great spot) NO NPC's at all.

I useally go to LFT 65, its in the middle of the bubble anarchy without any stations.

But i have to agree, combat while mining is optional. Unless you mine in a RES.

at the moment my clipper is my mining ship however post release i am thinking i now have a reason to buy a type 10 :)

i think that could be a monster mining vessel.

It is, a bit of shame the ships update isn't providing a true mining monster though. I'd even be happy with a T-10 that has the extra class 8 slot (stick a big cargo bay where that stupid spoiler sits, or a built in refinery) Currently I find my T9 better for mining since it has 5 hardpoints and can haul way more ore back to base.

Dropping in and boosting away to a quiet spot is not going to be an option your using a scanner to locate best place you will need to hang about there or there would have been no point in scanning

You boost away first, once you find a quiet spot then you start prospecting. You guy's are thinking too hard about this, or have never actually done any mining. The mining areas are gigantic, you could cruise along for hours (days) and still be inside a Hotspot

The method (in populated space) is to find a Hotspot in SC, once you drop in keep an eye on scanners, when an NPC appears you lose the ship. Then carry on as normal.

I should add that NPC's leave you alone when you first drop in (because you haven't refined anything) Only issue is when you are switching rings, for example did a mission mining in Ice rings, then drop into a metal rich ring whilst still having various things in the cargo hold from the ice ring.
