Short form thread:

OP questions existence of moons due to no natural satellites using their colloquial name of small-m "moon".

Subsequent posters provide visual evidence of said "moons", OP questions why they are not named "moons".

Even more subsequent posters pedantize the argument further by pointing out the technical name for a moon is a "natural satellite"; thus missing the point of their existence in game as being the main point of this thread.

Sunrise, of course Just like the difference between 'the Moon' (or Luna) and 'a moon', there's a difference between 'the Sun' (or Sol) and 'a sun'.

The planet bit is technically wrong. Ideally, it should say "rocky world", since world can cover both planets and moons. I guess I could submit a bug about it, probably an easy fix [/Edit]

I think the main reason we haven't seen it yet is because it doesn't really serve that much purpose with the current gameplay mechanics. The only thing I can think of that it would aid with currently is plotting routes when exploring a system, but other than that?

I DO want it really really really really muuuuuuuch...but I also understand that it wouldn't have much of a purpose, other than looking nice, until new mechanics are introduced.

Any actual astrologers correct me if I am wrong. I know this is stupid but it still bugs me either way.

There is only 1 Moon. It orbits Earth. All other "moons" are natural satellites, not "moons" They have individual names as well.

Same thing with people calling everything a Sun. There is only 1 Sun and Earth orbits it. The rest are stars with their own names as well.

We are not calling all the other Earth-likes Earth. We understand they are planets. Not Earths.

1 Moon, 1 Sun. 1 Earth

The rest are Satellites, Stars, Planets.

Like I said. Stupid on my part for it to bug me but it does....lol.

Ok screw what I said before, I'll give this one more try to seriously answer your initial question.


Are the moons missing? - No, they are simply not called moons.

Moons are just planets circling other planets, which is why they are called planets in Elite. The only moon, called "Moon" in Elite is Earths moon. But even the Moon is defined as planet. There are millions of planets circling other planets in Elite, therefor there are millions of moons.

Ignore everything else. these are small balls of rock orbiting larger balls of rock.l Whether you call them a moon or not is relevant, yopu can't say they're not moons just because of some partially incorrect terminology in the information panel...
