Most of the new UI is just unfamiliar, not bad

Most of the new UI is a complete disaster.
I don't understand how it made it even past the design-paper.

I am too tired to write what's wrong with the new UI, the list is way too long.
It's maybe good for thoose 2-3% who make use of touchscreens, but for everything and everyone else it just sucks.

I've been reading some of the threads here and on reddit and steam regarding Odyssey, and while much of it is very valid criticism about bugs, server stability and framerates, I'm also seeing a surprising amount of people who are angry just because so many things look different now. I get it, change is scary, but the expansion hasn't even been out for a full week! Give it time! I've been playing all weekend and I'm already getting used to the new galaxy map lmao. I think the P.O.I. and Factions tabs in system view are way handier than the old system view too.

The new starport services and ship repair menus are confusing at first, but fleet carriers have already had this UI for a while. The new ship store is also so much nicer than the old one, you can actually see a render of the ship before buying instead of a fkin orange wireframe lol.

The only genuinely bad UI design-wise is the on-foot LeftAlt wheel, it is terribly stiff and the mouse-to-select is too slow for something that needs to be accessed quickly in the heat of battle. The InSight wheel also looks kinda ugly for something that is supposed to be the iphone of the future, but its pretty functional, getting to contacts, inventory, etc is very fast.

I dunno, I feel like a lot of the response to the new UI is kneejerk negativity just cause people have been playing with the old one for years. I'd rather see devs try to experiment with things like the UI than to leave it untouched and outdated forever out of fear of backlash.
Yes, I agree.

At first I found the outfitting screen confusing, but I very quickly got used to it and it's just asy easy to use but now more consistent with all other UI elements.

As far as the Galaxy Map is concerned it didn't even occur to me it was different, in the sense that I didn't even have to think about it. I just used it.

This is coming from someone who's only come back to the game after about a year.

The only small annoyance is it doesn't seem possible to exchange you current ship for a new one, you have to go back in and sell it. As someone who only really owns one ship at a time I'd like the option to trade in the value of my old ship for the new one with one press.

Oh yes, and I don't like this silly consolified 'hold for 1 second to select'. This is a PC and I should be able to click once and select things. Make it an option in the menus.

The Lift in the stations really bugs me. Push Button, Menu asking where you want to go. You Can Only Go One Place
That might well be because they eventually plan to add more things.

On moonbases for instance why can't we go down to the surface? Perhaps they plan to add more floors for some of the larger bases?

Bookmarks: If you have system selected and you want to remove the bookmark you cant just toggle the bookmark button anymore. Gives you an error that it already exists if you try? Why?? If you accidentally delete you just had to press the button again to put it back. Now you have to remember the name, go to bookmark manager and find it and then get the option to delete. In fact just using the bookmark manager is the easiest way to use bookmarks in any case.

SRV transfer cargo: was tedious enough before. Prob 999 times out of 1000 you just want to transfer all your cargo to your ship so why not just put Transfer All button next to Board button? Granted they have a Transfer All option now but to get to it you have to go to your inventory (try not to scroll down the options which seems particularly sensitive now), click transfer which takes you to another screen and puts the focus on Cancel right at the bottom and to get to Transfer All you have to scroll up through all the other items. And then, just in case you have changed your mind during the 3 minutes it took to get there you have to click again to confirm. And after all that there is no real feedback to let you know that the transfer has taken place.

Just 2 examples where it is definitely much worse now, not just different.

Its bad, but I hope its bad because its unfinished .

Dear Almighty Tharg, I hope that once fixes get beyond the "making it work and not crash" stage they'll start fixing the ui problems.

I just wish they'd acknowledge it.....

The sysmap and galmaps UI changes are a big step backward in terms of usability for explorers.

You have to do a whole lot of mousing over and clicking to do tasks that where as simple as one click to get planetary informations.

And the outfitting menu is quite a master class in crappy UI/UX design. Trying to swap engineered modules between ships was horrendous (and still is) when I tested it in alpha.

Station menus are okay though.

Hahahaha the UI isn't scary and neither is change in a game lol. Scary is moving city or starting a new job. The UI is nothing more than a half arsed job that won't be completed for several weeks/months. There's a reason they didn't push it out to the main game, they expect you to only play the on foot portion of the game in Odyssey and switch games to do everything else.

Stop making excuses for a development decision that they purposely made, it wasn't an accident.

Before I agree, please tell me where I can see which grenade type I have active.
Select a weapon, it shows it there along with ammo amount and number of grenades... However personally I think it should be in the bottom left not with the gun.

You can go to more than one place sometimes, e.g. wingmans ships. As other have mentioned, maybe they are going to add more in later on. e.g. planet surface. If they changed it to go to the one place if there is one place without asking, you're going to get so many complaints about people going to their ship when they wanted to switch ships and got to the other ship.

The UI in Elite Dangerous has always looked dated. Im assuming its big and boxy because it wants to cater to xbox/playstation people. To many big boxes, to many tabs, on a 4k screen it just looks childish. Take a look at Star Citizen, different cockpit UI for each ship, everything you need is onescreen or at worst 1 click away.

Now with Odyssey they are trying to turn it into Call of Duty. Still can't believe we cannot even walk around inside our ship, but we can a station or planet. Most of our time especially as a new player is spent in the cockpit, it is after all a space trading game supposedly. This now all seems to be taking a backseat.

I do not mind at all if they want to try new UI layouts.
In fact I welcome it.
They just need to remember that :-

1 : It has to be the same or a lower amount of clicks or button presses to do something never more.
2 : It has to give the same or more info on screen for the selection never less.
3 : Add features, not remove them.

Sadly they failed on all of those points with the UI in odyssey.

Edit. Load times could be added to that I guess.

The bad thing is that users get used to mistakes. Then if you want to do it right later, you get resistance. That is why my motto: Do it right now!

Agreed, someone needs to go on a UI design course, which i have done.

Firstly as much information on screen at once but not enough to cover up important information.

Secondly, the more pages and tabs you have the worse it is.

ED pages are to big in scale, to much repetition and many UI things. Tabs are to big, i suspect much of this is because they want a UI what works for XBox and PlayStation, but on a 4k max resolution screen it looks terrible.

The worst for me is the UI movement when pulling g's in combat. What clown thought it was a good idea to have some of the UI disappear when pulling high g's. I actually want to know what speed i am doing when in combat and high g. Just give us the ability to turn this off it is annoying to say the least.

The UI looks like it was designed by a 5 year old with a thick crayon.

False. More clicks and less functionality is bad.
