I really hope the beta is not a set period. I would like to play the game when I want, not when I have to.
I think you're reading something into Zac's words that just isn't there. He can't really give you a clear answer on the length of the beta right now because it's likely dependent on:
- How long Alpha 3 runs for - This will be dependent on feedback, fixing bugs and how long it takes to work on the additional features to be introduced in the beta.
- The final release date of the game - Frontier likely have a pretty good idea about this but this too will be dependent on feedback/bug fixes and implementing any finishing touches.
The beta should start when Alpha 3 wraps up and last until the eventual release at which point you'll be playing the final game. I doubt the beta is going to be a weekend long affair, merely an unfortunate typo in the original copy.
I'm no more knowledgeable than anyone else here (Frontier don't tell us mods secrets [sad]) but I can still come to some logical conclusions of my own.
I'd expect Frontier are probably aiming for around 2 months for Alpha 3 (Tuesday August 23rd - Tuesday October 25th) followed by a month long beta (Tuesday October 25th - Tuesday November 22nd) at which point they go to full release. However this is an absolute best case scenario and Frontier will want to allow some extra time for delays but probably no more than 3-4 weeks (extending the alpha and/or beta as necessary) in order to get the game out in time for Christmas.
The Frontier and Steam store will then have the following products available until release:
- Planet Coaster £26.99/€33.99/$40.99
- Planet Coaster: Thrillseeker Edition £29.99/€37.99/$44.99 – this version includes an in-game Golden Hat for your avatar, a Gold King Coaster mascot, a digital sketchbook, the Planet Coaster Official Soundtrack and access to the Planet Coaster beta.
Some people would surely like to upgrade their earlier Planet Coaster pre-order to the Thrillseeker Edition in order to unlock the digital extras and beta access.
It seems to me you guys are missing a trick by not offering an upgrade option on your own store for the £3/€4/$4 price difference between these two new products. With the new pre-order prices that go into effect on August 25th this upgrade would represent quite the bargain (£7/€7/$11 saving) for those who pre-ordered at the current price and will likely generate quite a few additional sales.
I doubt the alternative of them cancelling their cheaper pre-order and then buying the Thrillseeker Edition at £10/€11/$15 more than they originally paid will appeal to many.
