Ships Multi Mission Ship

O7 Cmdrs.

I have the following ship requirement for BGS and general mission running.
  • Medium pad ship for systems with only outposts.
  • Cruise speed of at least 400 and boost of 550 or better.
  • Good to above average agility.
  • Minimum single jump of 30 Lys and un-refueled range of at least 100 Lys.
  • All laser weapons, for those systems where there is no ammo restock.
  • At least 60 tons of cargo for trading, fetch or deliver and collecting mats in RES.
  • Collector limpet controller (may consider one of the multi purpose jobs if it is worthwhile for the increased weight)
  • Decent shields and hull for PVE and to able able to get away in a gank situation, I play in open most of the time, hoping to meet some friendly Cmdrs.
  • Ship should be good at at least Medium RES or Low CZ.
My first option is this Phantom.

I prefer small ships but they just don’t have all the capabilities that I need. i.e. Cobra Mk III and iCourier.

Please feel free to provide some critique or other options.

Credits and Engineering are not limited but PP weapons and modules are not to be considered. I have not yet seen the benefit yet to take the time to obtain any PP stuff.

Thank you.

Thanks Bigmaec, it is true that the Phantom fit the requirements. It is at this stage an untested design and I have only used the Phantom as a long range exploration ship.

I have several other ships for exploration, trading, combat, mining, and recovery missions.

Now that I am getting into BGS I need a ship that is more suitable for these types of operations. Currently using a Crusader but she can’t run all the lasers nor does she have quite the range. She is a beast in PVE combat but is a bit slow (but agile) and probably will get smashed by gankers.

However, I am willing to look at other options and also willing to lower some requirements, i.e. jump range or even cargo.

I am also looking for some advice and recommendations regarding shielding, weapon load-out, armor and engineering.

Another option that could fit is this Fed Assault Ship.

I have not flown the FAS before but it seems very capable and has about the same DPS, similar agility, speed, but half the price for slightly less range and cargo.

She has less shields but more hull, maybe it can be tweaked a bit.

I like your build (y)
would do it like that:

fly a slightly similar build (have several krait phantoms, best allrounder in elite)

Thank you exarp, one question though, why did you fit 2 chaff launchers? Can you use them seprately if using the assigned key bind, like heat sinks? I may have to test this. I have fitted multiple heat sinks to my rescue ship and they pop one after the other using the key bind very nicely.

I normally only use chaff when I end up in front of a large ship during a joust, which is not often, or if jumped by a wing of enemies and I need to disengage and extend. That is why a prefer speedier ships.

Something else I have noticed that you can’t assign a power priority other than 1 to the Guardian Shield Reinforcement module. In Coriolis there is no limitation set to this but in EDSY and in game it is limited to 1 though. This does put a limit on the size and capability of the Power Plant.

As a mission runner I like the MkII more.
The Phantom is a highly specialized tool, a sharp blade for special circumstances.
The Mk.II is a jack-of-all-trades.

That's my Mk.II for Odyssey. You could swap the c4 cargo and c6 SRV around, and use efficient beams, getting closer to your specifications:

The hatch breaker controller is an operations multi limpet controller. You can switch the prismatic for a bi-weave no problem.

yes you can use 2 chaff launcher, although in the build I changed it again to 1 chaff launcher and 1 point defense
my experiences are there better for math grinding in hazres (when the shield down, the bots are fire rockets)

Bicmaec, that Mk II for Oddessy, is a pretty neat build. Definitely fits the design criteria very well. I have one very similar and it is my main ship on my main account. It is one of the most capable and versatile ships in ED. It is so good I keep on tweaking it, just so that I can use it most of the time. Sometimes I change modules just for a few missions. I do find that it is a bit lacking in the agility department after playing with the free Courier and Vulture. Which are fun but not suitable for serious BGS “work”.

However, I would like to try some different options and try the other ships available. Maybe there is something that fits.

As you guys know buying a ship and outfitting is fairly easy, but when it comes to engineering, the grind does get a bit much. I made a few crappy builds before and wasted mats on some dead end designs.

That is why I am plumbing the depths of knowledge of this forum, plus we all may learn something. For all practical purposes I am still a newby.

Here is two more options Chieftain and Crusader.

Surely the best PP module worth the grind is prismatic shields??
Hi Neo

Probably prismatics or maybe the cytos, still haven't decided to commit 4 weeks to that. So far in my experience the prismatics are only really worth it for PVP or wing assassination missions. From what I have seen they are heavy, power hungry, expensive and take a long time to charge, but they are very strong. May be wrong here since I haven’t tried them yet.

Cytoscramblers on the other hand seems pretty good but only effective against shields. With scramble spectrum they may also still be even useful once the shield goes down. I might make an effort just for that. It seems to be the best use of size 1 slots against shields you can get.

If you need space then an engineered class 4 prismatic and a couple of decent boosters will give decent shields. This leaves room for a decent cargo. The name of my truly fully engineered phantom is "The Menace Phantom". It has enough shields and weapons to go into a combat zone for a short while and can get enough speed and jump to be useful. This while carrying cargo etc. It is a dammed good ship. If you want full combat ability I have to agree that the Krait Mk III may serve slightly better if a tad slower and heavier.

Depends what you need it for?

For example, putting a 3A Prismatic instead of a 3A Shield generator will add 5T of weight and on a lightweight Courier probably force you to move up from a 2A to 3A power plant (another 2.5T), so you lose about 50m/s of speed, but swapping a 2E Burst laser for a 1F Cytoscrambler would save you half the weight with 2x the DPS (against shield).
Packhounds are a great way of getting torps past Point defence.
Imperial hammers give you 3 chances of sniping a module instead of one (and are damn good fun).

Best mission runner (medium ship) is the Python.
Unless you really need a SLF, in which case it's the Krait Mk2

Sure, it doesnt meet the 550 boost speed, but... why you need it?
You'd still not be able to outrun a Clipper, Phantom or Mamba... but in a Python you dont need to. You can simply low wake against any other medium except another Python, or you can simply Highwake if there is a ship that can mass lock you.

Take this Python: 1407 MJ raw shields using Bi-weaves, 1700 hull after resists, 2x MRP, the TechBroker FSD (increased range+fast reboot), 4 gimbaled beams + 1 corrosive MC (it's really cheap to re-synth ammo for a single MC and it will last a lot if you use it conservatively), 128 tons cargo, 32ly jump range fully laden and a 3B operations MLC (hatch breakers, recon and collectors)
You cant really beat this :)

I thought the whole premise of prismatics was to use a one size smaller to give you the same shield strength, thus freeing up the now bigger slot?
Aha, never thought of it that way. It will make a bit more sense, especially if you only want to deal with the odd interdiction or kill pirate mission. Thank you for that tip.(y)
