Multiple Commanderes Plea

To me having a single cmdr actually makes the choices and actions that I make feel important, as if they matter... instead of 'oh, I have a cmdr for x,y,z'

I would like to have a second Commander also, I'm happy to buy another copy to do that. I currently have an Anaconda fully decked out that cost me around 300 million and have a fair bit of cash as well so I don't want to give that all up after spending the many many hours of play to get it. As extra slots don't look like they are coming soon my only option is to buy a second copy.

Can you let me know if you had any issues using the second copy on the same computer, I assume you have to create a complete new user account and just change the log in details depending on which commander you want to use. Could you let me know what you did to get the second Commander?

I was an Alpha Backer so I was hoping that I would get all the benefits with the second copy but I don't think that is going to happen. Does anyone know if there is a way to buy a second copy and get the benefits of an Alpha Backer etc.

Many thanks in advance for any help/info.
No, problems. I just created a second user account on my Windows 8.1 system and installed the second copy. The data specific to each cmdr is stored in the appdata folders which is unique to each Windows user. When updates come out, you have to update each account separately.

I enjoy having the two cmdrs. I'm exploring with my son with one. He has a young family and doesn't have a lot of time to play. If I only had one cmdr, I'd be constantly traveling each time we played together.

Also happy with multiple slots. Cant wait until I have at least two so I can dedicate one to exploring while I can still pew pew with the other one.

This wouldnt be the fist game to allow for multiple avatars, and wont be the last. Griefers and all.

Signed.

My son wrapped my Cobra 'round a 'roid last night. I'd appreciate him having his own ship! ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

After taking my daughter through the training missions, she thought she could fly like an ace. Ended up faceplanting my FDL into the side of a station.

Months of requesting this very feature has fallen on deaf ears. Short of....oh hell I don't even know anymore......suffice to say that I'd love to hear why it's not possible and if it is, why has it not been implemented.

Maybe it's Advanced Rocket Science?

I spoke to Micheal about this some months back. It is indeed possible, however, at the moment it merely remains "an option for the future" to use his words... :(

I know this pain, my boys cost me 8 ships so far....plus he went through a phase of insisting that I keep a Viper on standby everywhere I went "But I only want to fly a Viper Dad". Tying me down from my natural wandering playstyle.

Then he discovered the Clipper, flew it like a Viper and crashed the nacelles into the letterbox for 2M, lolololol. He's scared of the Python (too slow and expensive for him) and the weathers good, so these days I'm free to roam :)

I don't understand 'why can't we haves multiple slots?' Presumby if you buy another copy of the game you can?

I don't think FD are being unreasonable in expecting you to pay for what is in effect a second copy of their product. I appreciate the virtual nature of software 'feels' different to other consumer items but the principles are the same.

Try buying a car and then asking for a second one for free (or fraction of the price) using the reasoning that its not fair to pay full price because:
A) I can't drive them both at the same time, or
B) The second one is for the wife/ kids/ dog etc...

When you have a house, family, kids, etc. You're lucky if you can get two or three new games for yourself. Being able to share once piece of software is quite nice.

Arrived at this point I think it may be relevant to re post the latest coming from Sandro as well back in 2013...:

So, current thinking is to have a small number of characters available per account. Say perhaps three normal characters. These can be "normal" commanders or "perma-death" commanders. Only one could ever be active "in-game" at a time and there would be no concept of links between them (so no shared stash, or reputation ties or any such stuff).

Our reasoning so far is as follows:

* More than one person can have a commander, so family members can get in on the act (of course, to play at the same time you'd need two accounts, but this is still - I think - a benefit. Personally I like to think that multiple commanders allows additional players to dip their toes and hopefully progress into obtaining additional accounts.)

* Player choices in-game can be more about the specific commander, reducing the worry that a bad call will ruin everything achieved so far. This is actually quite important; I want to train people away from the idea that there are "right" and "wrong" ways to play Elite: Dangerous. There are just choices and consequences, and we're trying to ensure that all lead to more fun. I want to remove barriers to player experimentation, whilst retaining consequence; I think multiple commanders helps this cause.

* Any potential exploits for multiple commanders almost certainly exists the the multiple account level as well, so limiting an account to one commander would not save us the time and effort of guarding against multiple commander exploits.

* Any serious player infractions (exploits and cheating, player abuse etc.) would always be dealt with on an account basis rather than at the commander level.

* Multiple commanders allow a player to have multiple roleplay options available at the same time, which could be very useful (e.g. I have a scoundrel pirate and a legit trader available depending on my mood, which friends are online etc.)

* I don't find the terms "main", "alt" or "toon" particularly useful in what we are creating. Whilst at a basic level you could certainly argue that the commander with the best current gear/most money/best contacts is your "main" there are no levels - that money can be lost, the gear can be broken, powerful friends can become deadly enemies.

Now this is not to say that we are casually dismissing potential dangers of multiple commanders. We are and always will be on the look out for exploits and activity that undermines the experience (the "cheapening" effect is a valid concern we have considered). But at the moment, we feel a more compelling argument can be made for multiple commanders.

I hope this gives a clear enough picture of our intentions as they stand currently.

I have a house, job, three kids, dog and a rabbit. Like many others money is tight and we are careful. It still doesn't change the age old concept of having to pay for stuff that you want!

But in fairness mate I take your point if its something that was promised, I wasn't aware of that.
GTA online has a second character slot and that was at no extra cost. GTA also still has issues with extra slots but that's not for this forum.

Thanks for the reply, such a simple solution I should have thought of that myself. I'm off to get me a second Commander, thanks again.

Then do it the right way and buy him a copy of the game.

The way this game is setup with every cmdr influencing the galaxy with all they do it is made for 1 cmdr per player. Hope they never add multiple saves

All they had to do was make the solo/private groups a single separate save from the open and voila! 2 commander slots.
One to learn in that doesn't effect open in any way whatsoever and the open save to get out and participate in PowerPlay/faction buffing.

And don't listen to that Hate guy. He murders slaves by dumping them in front of stations. :)

So the Powerplay Beta is released and I decided to clear my save knowing it won't effect my "real" commander. I have not played ED for a couple of months and I must say I really enjoyed the game again starting from scratch. It also had nothing to do with the new Powerplay features. I think I just enjoyed starting again but knowing straight away what I was doing!

However.........I cannot bring myself to clear my save outside of the beta. 20 million in the bank and 20 million worth of ships. Oh and the effort it took to get there. It is ridiculous really as I'm bored of my commander. For now anyway. Problem is I do not want to just kill him off forever and eject him into eternity!

I just cannot see why we do not have the option to create at least one other commander. Can someone smarter than me please explain why this is such a big deal. I mean, both/multiple commanders would be linked exclusively to the one account. You could only ever have one playing at one time. Other games do this and every "character" created is mutually exclusive and has no influence at all on each other.

Look, I'm open to criticism here and a useful discussion on the subject. If it can be explained why multiple commanders are not possible, either technically or ethically or for whatever reason then I'm all ears. I simply cannot see why it is not possible. Heck I'd even pay a fiver for a new commander "slot"!

Maybe a thought or two from FD would be good too.

I hope the add a option to buy another commander slot in the same account.

I am all for multiple commanders as well.

I think with powerplay upon us, it is a must. See, I am also a pen and paper role-player. I like to give my commander a backstory and spice up the in-game events in my imagination. I am typing up the backstory of my current commander for the Lore and Roleplay forum at the moment.

He is a former System Authority Police Force pilot who got shot up and wounded in a space battle and was retired from the service in consequence because of sustained injuries (which led to some cybernetic replacements). Thanks to his disability insurance and the police force retirement plan he was able to afford a civilian Eagle (the Freeagle that came with Mercenary Edition) and he got a Sidewinder (or Loanwinder) from his insurance company. Now he is off to blaze his own trail with his own company "Ashfield's Space Services" that specializes in DD (Delicate Deliveries), RR (Reliable Retrievals) and LL (Legitimate Liquidations). He is more of the law abiding side and works as a lone wolf. He has no reason to resort to piracy or mining or trading.

However I would also like to play a space pirate who preys on NPC traders and does bounty hunter and authority ship kill missions, but I will not do this with my Commander Ashfield for RP reasons.

And with power play I would imagine that people would like to have different commanders to work for different powers.

This....
