My key bindings reset every time I enter the controls tab...

I didnt ask my question correctly. Can i have xboxBT3.0 , and xboxUSB3.0 in the bindings folder? As long as they are identified in the startpreset file??
Yes but only one can be used at a time. StartPreset.start only records the last preset used.

Also i think i saw someone typed i can put my backup binds in a folder within the Bindings folder and the game will not be effected.. is that correct?
Yes, that was me who wrote it. The problem with updates overwriting our bindings is because when you modify your bindings ED saves it as custom.binds. An update often overwrites custom.binds and you loose what you had. That is why renaming the file stops that happening.
If you want to use two different devices at the same time. ED should recognise that they are different and name the entries in the binds file appropriately. (Theory as I'm on a PC with only one device as a HOTAS.
I hope this helps.

My key bindings reset every time I open the control section in the settings, close the game or do anything related with the controls. This has become more of a pain in the a** since the addition of the new HUD modes and the Night Vision as I continuously have to set them again...

Make sure before you leave the controls settings that the selection for controller is on "custom". If you don't have you controller plugged in when making changes this will revert to a standard setting like KBM or generic joystick, then when you make the changes and save it it will overwrite your previous "custom" settings, creating a new one. When you have evrything set as you like it make a backup of the controller settings then if you lose them you can just copy it back over the top of the existing ones.

I open the "Custom.3.0.binds" file in notepad (or whatever) and then do a File ... Save As ... (for example) "Xbox Elite 2 Gamepad.3.0.binds"
Next, open that new file and edit LINE 2 to read:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<Root PresetName="Xbox Elite 2 Gamepad" MajorVersion="3" MinorVersion="0">

Now, when you next launch Elite Dangerous, go into Control Settings, open the drop-down list and you will see ... Xbox Elite 2 Gamepad ... available to select.

You can do that for as many different Controller Configurations as you like.

Well, some of us just migrated over form console to PC, steam had a sale last week of ED for $15. And we're not accustomed to our control settings being lost.

Had this problem awhile back, turns out if you make a backup of your controller configuration file and leave it in the same folder as the original, it confuses ED. Make sure any backups you make are moved out of that folder.

This.

You can save a backup in the same folder -- but you can't leave it with the same file extension (.binds). Add on a .bak or something and you'll be good.

My take on this:
The most important thing to stop updates overwriting your binds is to change the name of the custom.binds and to put that name in StartPreset.start, without the extension.
Strontium bow-wow has written instructions in the thread:

I have found that you can have multiple binds files in the folder without any downside. You can also put old bind files in a sub directory, if you want to.
