My open letter to Fdev

So I've been sitting quietly for a few pages reading and I want to throw another hand grenade in here for people to play pass the parcel with.

Giving bonuses or in any way locking gameplay to open will not work and will be easily circumvented.

Without giving too much away as I don't condone this at all I was on a student router a while ago servicing a good number of people in my building. It really did not like the Peer to Peer system and I rarely saw people despite really wanting to. Ruined a few of my fuel rat rescues where I should have been first on scene only to be greeted by blank space.
In this instance I did see some people although even with my elementary knowledge of networking I think I could work out how to play open and have it for all intents and purposes be solo mode.

In any case it'd probably also knock on increase the number of combat loggers which in response to this comment:

I can only say "Keep logging until FD have no choice but to change the game!!" <- Yes sarcasm to the n'th level and I actually feel bad posting this but your comment was very very very silly as I hope you've realised with some of the other responses. :p

Anyway I'm sorry to say I have no solutions here, just want to point out some of the fixes arn't fixes when you walk through them to the sadly inevitable conclusion.

Didn't scare me but put me off the game within the free trial was the fact that a good portion of the game world had descended into different tree-houses playing no girls allowed territory control where everyone needed a map, a gamebible and their brain connected to the online database just to avoid the no-fly zones.
If FD didn't have the game modes and non-subscription model I'd have seen the MMO tag and laughed as I walked away, being different is a selling point, if people want Eve 2.0 they should petition Eve to re-create their game from a different viewpoint. I mean if Command and Conquer can do a FPS (Renegade) after many many strategy games then any game series can flip genres :p

Pssst, do not mention the router setup thing :)

It is my ace in the sleeve, just in case that someone in FD will be crazy enough to implement some Open-only game content or better Open rewards. :)

The amount of civil unrest caused by one little invasion into a private group just boggles my mind. Where I come from, something like that would just be laughed off as a stupid prank, not worthy of getting hysterical over.
Gotta ask, where do you come from? Where I come from, Texas, breaking a gentleman's agreement can cost you teeth or worse.

Every player making CG in solo are like cheaters for me... It looks like script kiddies using "invulnerable" mode on every game they play. No more and no less...
COMMUNITY GOALS Damned godness , community, CO-MMU-NI-TY !!!!!!!!.... ALONE, in SOLO ???

Cheaters ! Cheeeeeeeeeeaters !!!! Every you are !!!!!!

Including the one's on your side?

I know it must be hard for you to understand but invading a peaceful PVE group where players enter into an agreement not to shoot each other with the sole intent of murdering said players who are not kitted out to fight PVP is an extreme form of harassment and bullying.
Please....

I'd love to hate the OP, killing cmdrs in a PVE group really isn't cricket.

But I do think that in this instance he is making a very valid point. Perhaps implementing some % boost for those taking part in CG's in open or a penalty for those in solo/pg. For instance anybody participating in a CG in solo or private group would only contribute 25% towards the goal as opposed to those in open who would contribute fully.

Except this is the third such instance. in the last 3 - 4 months. All of them major, all of them damaging. CODE and another group did it earlier this year, and FDev came out and spoke on it. 13th Legion did it last weekend, and now some of them have paid with their accounts.

+1 if I could, but consider this a virtual +1 until I spread some around.

I'm pretty sure CODE stopped this practice shortly after some of their rogue members tried it on last year.

There was another incursion this year that gained notoriety and led to reasonable actions by FD. We all know who they were, but we don't need to do the name and shame thing here. This latest incident seems like its being handled well too. I doubt that the perps paid with their accounts. Maybe a temporary shadow ban for now. Maybe they'll be watched a bit closer in the future.

It would be nice to see these things come to an end, but we also need to be aware that it can happen again. Learning to high wake out and always keeping a recorder going might be wise. You never know when evidence is needed and it also helps to get the CMDR's name so it can be reported to the PG owner.

sure, but that's not what OP is about.

you might dismiss it as a cover up for griefing, or may deem it inaccurate or dishonest, but even so there are some valid points made. frontier themselves (link above) reckon that cg balance is broken. it was known, but it has now come to collective attention and urgency through this action, and some sort of solution is now expected. that's as close to activism as it gets in a game.

i have no idea if the statement is honest or if the action was actually carried out fully as described. maybe it's just for the lulz or totally a troll. but you have to give them that: it makes sense as described, and there is still an issue to address.

tbh if you are really involved in the game (many of us are) i can understand that watching your efforts getting trampled over by a host of players that elude challenge alltogether might warrant a call for action, and how such a population like mobius is a juicy target to rise awareness. i can understand the same for powerplay fans vs mindless solo grinders, i bet they would do something similar now and then but just don't have such good targets available. this is a core problem of a universe that frontier declares uncontrollable but still stubbornly wants to somehow control, and it's an issue for a big part of the player base for different reasons that frontier just hasn't figured out how to handle.

i can also understand that it infuriates someone to get unexpectedly blown up. no question, they are victims. but if the action was carried out as described they didn't have to die. they could play the role, or even show some understanding like you do when buses go on strike. and they were never guarranteed not to die except by their private hosts: their ingame sense of security is false anyway and uncalled for imo, it's just a workaround. a private group that size is impossible to police with total confidence, and that isn't in reach of frontier either. unless you play solo or with trusted people only, the possibility of death by player is always there, it can happen anywhere at any time for no reason, but specially if you get jumped on by a cmdr in superior outfit telling you to u-turn and you refuse, or you know what's going on but still try because, you know, you have private rules. yes, a separate pve environment could be a solution ... provided it has its own bgs. i'm totally fine if anyone doesn't want to be bothered, but then he/she shouldn't have any influence on the collective. if not i'd be infiltrating mobius and ramming cmdrs to boredom for justice myself! :D

all this of course assuming the statement is legitimate and mobius was chosen because of the repercussion, and there is no specific grief against the group going on. honestly i have no idea.

looks i got carried away writing my irrelevant and unsolicited opinion, not directed at you, really. :)

See, my reply was primarily about your activism and civil disobedience reference.

Activism and civil disobedience however is targeted at the governing body (read FD) and not your fellow citizens (read fellow players).

Targeting your fellow citizens in order to force concessions out of the governing body is called "terrorism".

I have no problem with the OP's wish to provoke change (regardless of me agreeing with his point or not), i have a problem with the means.

Civil disobedience in an online game ? I have an example.

Nobody died, nobody lost their ship, the devs buckled (to some extent anyway), and it was fun to boot with because the community came together over it.

The targets that get hammered in the vid are indestructible, but the thousands of players doing it clogged up and gridlocked the biggest eve trade hubs for several days.

Not that i know of a similar way of non violent protest that could work in ED, i do admit that.

I am only surprised (unpleasantly) that you was not yet banned from the game completely. But maybe FD just not have enough time to go through the logs and ban everyone who violated the EULA.

Actually you are quite right. This player should be banned according to FDev T&C's. Hope he/she finds this post funny... (But in reality, it's likely FDev won't ban anyone. And this will lead to chaos and the downfall of their game.)

I know it must be hard for you to understand but invading a peaceful PVE group where players enter into an agreement not to shoot each other with the sole intent of murdering said players who are not kitted out to fight PVP is an extreme form of harassment and bullying. It is and should be punished with a ban. I'm glad that FD are taking it seriously and the likes of you are a minority that this game could do without.

Let me see if I got this right: even though I've never destroyed another CMDR, and certainly never invaded a PG under false pretenses, the game would be better off without the likes of me? Why is that? Because I'm more tolerant than you? Because I don't agree with your assessment that what the 13th Legion did is that big a deal in the grand scheme of things? That the idea of a PvE player getting blown up is worth calling someone a sociopath over? Do you start to see why I used the word "hysteria" and clearly think you're overreacting a tad?

Saying that this game would be better off without the "likes of me" is a foul blow. I've done plenty to earn my place in this universe, and I certainly have a right to my opinion without incurring your pathetic attempt at verbal abuse.

Power-play is the environment it does not belong to any wannabe masters of the universe group or self appointed Darth Vaders you have equal access to manipulate it in solo. You by your own admission are the only group that broke written agreements, I,m an empire supporter myself and if were overwhelmed by the federation thats the game win or lose. no one likes a sore looser.

Please, get a grip on reality. This is a video game, not real life.

It's not agreeing with me that is your issue. The fact that FDev have banned the 13th legion players from the game should indicate how serious the violation is. No verbal abuse intended. You either get it or you don't. And you don't.

Not a false report. You are inciting others to violate the EULA. Your statement was encouraging the violation of rules in the game, therefore, you are encouraging others to do so. Your issue to deal with the repercussions, not mine. But definitely not a false report.

There are people here encouraging others to set up their routers so that they can play in Open while never actually encountering other players. There are people who actively admit to, and encourage others to combat log by killing the client process.

Are you going to report them too?

So you're happy to play along and let FD decide the story and outcomes.
Or are you (trying) to blaze your own trail?

Where was it said they were banned from the game itself? All I had seen anywhere was they got banned from Mobius group

And to the OP, there are people in Mobius who were part of TF:Athena, working towards TF:Athena goals in Mobius, but doing so as a PVE action. Not ganking their fellow Mobius Players. I SAW one fighting against the System ships, outside of the no fire bubble around Ramsbottom while I was doing deliveries. That person, again, was doing it the right way, unlike you and your ilk. There are as many Imps and Alliance as there are Feds in Mobius.

Hell, I am currently flying a fed mission, yet I have a pending Imp promotion mission to Lord. And your leader sure as hell can't talk about being pure Empire, when he has a corvette, and therefore is a FEDERATION REAR ADMIRAL.

So much for your role playing justification. You guys are gankers and seal clubbers, pure and simple.

There was a post, either in game by one of their non banned members, on Redddit, or on their facebook, talking about how some of them got banned, and there are probably a few more that are about to get banned from the game. Not a lot of clarity as to if it was a perma ban, or a cooling off/time out ban.
