Names (both comander and ship)

Should players be allowed to include leet/1337 or clan tags in their Commander names?

I agree on this. There's nothing that breaks immersion than playing against somebody with a childish name.

Fair enough they may well be a child, but I want to feel as if I'm in this world. And considering so much effort has been put into building an immersive world which is so much more than an arcade-style shoot-em-up, why would anybody want to play it like one?

Wow, don't know how I managed to miss that thread. Thanks for pointing it out. I feel thoroughly ashamed of my research skills

I won't remove this one now though, because people have posted already and it would be rude. I'll just let it die a slow death :)

No need for that, I will just merge it. :)

Names are super important to me. I spent several sleepless nights coming up with my ship name.

Giving your ship an identity that is congruent with your reality makes the whole experience that much more personal and therefore immersive.

I toyed with amusing/rude/outrageous/meaningful monikers (a la Iain Banks) and eventually settled on nostalgic and reflective.

My ship will be called "Step to Enchantment" the name of a Jeff Mills tune from back in the day that was way ahead of its time and still to this day remains a seminal classic. Also "enchanted" describes my relationship with the beauty of the night sky in a nutshell.

If i saw a ship called ipoopedmythong i think i would probably poop myself laughing. Before deploying hardpoints and doing the right thing of course :]

As for l33t bobs - good luck to em.

I think my opinion has been changed ever so slightly by this thread.

I agree that call-signs should be whatever you want them to be, because its not really any different from an email address nowadays. So if someone wants the handle "ipoopedmythong" so be it - I'll just assume its a l33t kiddie and either add them to the ignore list on sight or shoot at them (probably the former) and learn to live with it.

However, I'd still prefer to see cmdr names that at least sound like they might be a real person, in any language you like, in-game. Because our avatars are supposed to be real in-game people who were named by their parents and who presumably grew up without feeling a strong desire to change it asap.

So no stupid sentences, sexually suggestive terms, or random sequences of letters and numbers etc would be my preference.

Saying that, Superman might disagree with me :) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6939112.stm

* By the way, I will definitely not be using omgspace in-game :)

Leet speak should only be allowed if preceded by:

ATH0
ATDT xxxxxxxxxxx

And you recognise V.32 to V.34 negotiation by the sound.

Your post makes me realize how much I have forgotten over the years  I use to love the sound of two modems negotiating.

So if you're not gonna use it, is ipoopedmythong up for grabs then? :D

It's all yours. I think it depends who you get reviewing it on whether it'll make it through; whoever was on duty when I tried blocked it, but I see there's a player called pooptart, so there's still some hope.

I've been waiting until I get my hands on Beta before I create a Request post over on the Gameplay forum, but my current preference is something like Commander name (first & last), callsign/nickname & optional ship name.

Sounds good to me. Then they could be a bit more stringent over naming rules for the first name & surname, but relax the rules for the call-signs and ship names.

EDIT: Just want to make it clear that I'm currently officially known in-game as 31337_BroMleY [KOOS]. This is the name that you will see when you meet me (and kill me for having a silly name) and also the one you'll see in the newspapers (my opinion of my abilities may be slightly inflated). My attempt to change to a more sensible [OOPS] ipoopedmythong was blocked by some vigilant person, although I see there's a CMDR Pooptart out there.
...

Hahaha, CMDR Pooptart, checking in. To be fair, I think my name is a little less gross, lol.
