Names (both comander and ship)

Should players be allowed to include leet/1337 or clan tags in their Commander names?

Sorry, but I really need to chime in here.

Unfortunately there are two sides to the fence here, and both are equally valid.

One side, not L337 Sp34k. Yeah, I get it, some folks love it some hate. Me I'd lean more to the hate than love.

Other side, Every thing proper. Ok, cool, provided you get yer name first.

Example:

I go by the Moniker NeonKnight in almost every thing I do, it's me email, my Online Name in more games than I can remember, my moniker in tons and tons of forums, etc.

Obviously I was tickled that being a late arrival here I was able to get my name. Same with Star Citizen and MechWarrior Online. However, not the case for Battlefield Bad Company/Battlefield 3 and XBox Live. There, I have to go by: NeonKn1ght....which, I hate. And in MWO I have met, and also killed in Combat, Neon Knight, who before doing so, made mention of "Oh, you're the guy who got my Nic before me!"

Now, it's a Big Galaxy, so logically there can a metric ton of people with the exact same name, unfortunately, being a game where your Nic is also your account name, we are stuck with only one NeonKnight, so what happens to the rest who want to be NeonKnight? Well, the only options now are:

Neon Knight
Neon-Knight
Neon_Knight
N3onKnight
Ne0nKnight
NeonKn1ght
etc.

I think we see.

Very little surprises me these days... I'll tqke your word for it.

Guess you'll have to take it or not - I'm bound to medical confidentiality in that regard - but considering an example I've never met and the person openly advertisinig using the name, I suppose it's fine to link this.

Would he be banned for using his real name?

And yes - I have seen far worse.

Just to clarify I wasn't espousing banning the PLAYERS, just the use of names like that. I'd also like to point out that I opened by stating this was an opinion only, and closed saying that I'm aware that my opinion on this matter could never be enforced. As an opinion of course it's intolerant... opinions are quite personal and almost always intolerant of the opinions of others. I'd never suggest it be made an official policy tho, it's far too judgemental.

Point taken - however willing to ban player names based on ones personal cultural preference is corroborating my concerns. What about inhabitants of this place?

[edit]: As expected, automated censorship made short work of that link. Add an U, a C and a K into it. Buy an F for the first letter.

I really don't care that much what you call yourself tho I'd prefer to see something original. I just roll my eyes and fly on when I see the han solos and mal reynalds. That comment was more directed at people who play these games to spoil it for others rather than role play them. When they think about MMORPG's they concentrate on the MMO part and forget about the RPG bit.

So what's original about Sandmann? I'm intrigued.

Yah I admitted that my opinion was intolerant, judgemental and unworkable as a policy and that I'd never propose someone actually try to impliment it.

Well it's true that I didn't exactly invent the name but my point wasn't to suggest that each person invent a brand new, never heard before name while at the same time avoiding l33t sp34k... just saying that seeing players trying to like themselves to screen heros... eg: picard/kirk/reynolds/solo/skywalker in a space game. I don't know of any SciFi reference to a "sandman" or "sandmann"... and in fact I've been using the nick since the late 1980's on BBS systems before you could even get onto the internet on a home computer.

Anyway I didn't mean to pi55 you off, sorry if I did. We're all entitled to our opinions and that just happens to be mine.

What if some folks don't select a name? My default name was Commander Backer some ridiculously long number.

Personally, I would rather not know anyone's name until I asked them for it. Other then that I could care less what they call themselves.

It's kind of funny how people object Commander names and no one complains about forum names... Just saying... Not that they should... but it's same thing...

Forum names don't break immersion... and my commander name IS the same.

I guess players shouldn't have commander names with the word "Elite" or number versions or non English characters because it's not consistent with the lore.

A problem of immersion ?

I'm not usually keen on all these clan tags and silly names in multiplayer games.
But for once, I think it probably doesn't matter here.

It is the future, it is a galaxy made up of people/creatures/aliens from far & wide, with any manner & permutations of family/genetic history, bionic parts, inter-Galactic cross breeding, mutating or cloning.
So if one day, we ever really are out there in our private spacecraft, I think we are very likely to see just about any name you can think of.

And whatever the name or number, you can find a science fiction based reason or excuse for having it :)

I just hope they speak English

Some clan tags or l337 names don't bother me whereas others seem to annoy me, however I can't put my finger on any definition of which is which.

Usually it's the xXxXxinsternameherexXxXx type ones that get to me a bit more than say the numeric ones, must be all the superfluous use of x and the lower and upper case changing, not really sure.

But in a world where people can be called Dweezil, Moon Unit, Number 16 Bus Shelter (look it up) etc I suppose anything goes in gaming.

I did once annoy some guy who had an l337 type name by calling him one three three seven whatever his name was, he did kind of get my point as to how else was I supposed to pronounce it though.

Basically as others have said you can justify almost anything and at the end of the day I'm free to let the name go over my head as much as they are to play and name themselves however strangely they like.

My thought exactly, when I pressed yes for the poll.

L33t pilot names

Edit: The below was merged in from another thread I foolishly started :)

Hi all,

I've looked for this topic on the forums (probably not very hard) and haven't found it, so forgive me if its a repeat.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there will be any kind of moderation on pilot/avatar names in-game? I plan to eventually play multiplayer online, once I've gotten confident enough with singleplayer online, and wonder if I'll be seeing lots of "Cmdr Ima-gonna-pwn-u" flying around ruining the immersion?

I know this sounds a bit hypocritical coming from the idiot who called his forum account "omgspace" (first thing I could think of when I signed up in a hurry ), but I'm really hoping to see people using at least semi-proper names as much as possible when we're actually in the game.

Semi-proper names meaning not a stupid sentence, or sexually suggestive term, or random sequence of letters and numbers; anything like that.

What does everyone think on this?
