There is that, but it also allows guilds to advertise/brag. In-game resources (e.g. GalNet news, bounty lists) will have commander names in them.If people want to advertise their affiliation in the commander's name, I would let them. It makes spotting wannabe guild members that much easier.

Whereas, if FD do want to enable people to have clan tags, having it as a separate field makes sense. It can be ignored/switched off and it allows people to change their clan tags without applying for another name change.
Should naming conventions be auto-limited to English customs? Definitely not. I love the variety of different cultures and would like to see them represented in the game.
Are there any restrictions on choosing Game Names?
Yes, though we will try and be as accommodating as possible. The following list covers the majority of reasons why a name might be rejected:
Universal Reasons
- Duplicates - the name you selected was already taken
- Profanities
- Non UTF-8 characters used
- Use of Elite/Frontier names (Jameson, Elite, Braben, etc)
Commander names
- Name includes a rank e.g. Captain, Major, General etc.
NPC names
- Use of numbers and specific special-characters e.g. "J0hn Smith@22"
- Potential IP violations - while OK for commander names we can't accept names for game characters to which we don't own the rights; so no "Han Solo" or "Coca-Cola" here.
Space stations & planet names
- Advertising - overt advertising would clash with the game fiction, so be careful if you want to use your company or brand e.g. "Frontier World" would be fine but "Frontier.co.uk" would not.
- Potential IP violations - while OK for commander names we can't accept names for in-game assets, such as space stations, to which we don't own the rights; so no "Death Star" or "McDonald's".
Jameson names
- Including Jameson in your name e.g. if you wanted "Rob Jameson" (already taken), just enter "Rob".

I consider leetspeak an anachronism and always disliked it, but if someone wants to show it's his first day on the internet, let him.
If my new request is rejected, do I lose my original accepted name?
Also, we'll be allowed to have 3 characters in-game - when will we be able to reserve names for these characters?
That silly / no halfway sane name might be just a plain regular name in any language. And Should that commander change it only because other commanders can't pronounce it? Kind of silly...
There's no support in UTF-8 for Chinese or Arabic symbols. (EDIT: I think. I'll try them next after my current name change attempt) Would you like to see those in-game?
My opinion - commander names should be.reasonably sensible. Let's face it, no mother is gonna.call here baby commander somrthing with numbers or brackets in it (except maybe Richard III etc). With ship names more latitude is ok... silly names are fine but no gibberish names. Clan tags etc have no place in the game.
Mind you, I'd also like to ban the Kirks, Picards, Skywalkers, Reynalds etc too. I appreciate that people enjoy these shows and wish to identify them but really, use some imagination. Do you really think your favourite SciFi hero would be transporting coffee in a sidewinder?
Having said that, I'm aware that there's no chance of having that enforced. They will no more edit out gibberish names than they will try to force people to role play it. Pity, but there you go. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
You'd be surprised what mothers call their children and which surnames actually exist. I have personally met people who would most certainly be banned for using their real life name in any computer game.
Having people banned for something they like just because of your very own perception of it is a bit intolerant, don't you think?
It's not about wanting to watch the world burn, it's about watching people wanting to burn others for their names.
