ANNOUNCEMENT Narrative additions and Dev Diary FAQ

To be honest I'm more excited about the continuation of narrative, lore and story driven gameplay then walking around.
That might change over time and legs could become a nice addition but I loved the previous stories based on lore that we had in the past and we didn't have legs back then either.

Thank you for bringing us back something that should never have left, but I suppose it was necessary because you have broken the game a lot, you love to show yourself merits and thanks. 🤷‍♂️

I still think this is a botch, stopping the stories for so long and so on.

Greetings Commanders!

As you will have seen from the events today (and heard if you tuned into our livestream) GalNet and wider narrative content is being reintroduced to Elite Dangerous.

While this has been away for a little while, the community and development teams have been constantly reviewing the feedback that’s been shared by you. We all understand the importance of this content to the community and we appreciate your incredible patience while we've been putting necessary focus on Odyssey. To ensure that focus continues, we have assembled a dedicated new team to ensure that content like CG’s, bonus weekends and of course GalNet, are back in the game.

It is with great pleasure that today we share with you a glimpse of our plans, some of which you will already have seen roll into action today.

Today's GalNet article is the first piece of a new multi-arc narrative set to extend beyond the launch of Odyssey into 2022. Featuring new plot threads and some returning favourites from the past, this galactic story will be shaped by you, our players, to ensure that it reflects the living game of Elite Dangerous.

If you're wondering what that means, you can expect:
  • GalNet
  • Community Goals
  • Bonus and seasonal events
  • An ongoing multi-arc narrative extending beyond the launch of Odyssey into 2022
  • Opportunities to reshape corporations and markets
  • AND... the potential to change the diplomatic landscape of the galaxy as we know it...
There will be twists and turns, excitement, opportunities to make your mark and of course, bountiful rewards.

We’re excited to continue rolling this out and we can’t wait to see how you get involved.

In addition to the announcements for in game content we’d also like to take the opportunity today to answer some of your questions on The Road to Odyssey dev diaries series. The Road to Odyssey is a multipart series which will examine a number of different aspects of the experience with episodes set to tackle further locations, missions, combat and more over the coming months.

We know there will be more questions... but we have to save some excitement for another day!

I've heard the term Organics used in relation to Odyssey - does this mean we'll see life beyond just plants?
The thin atmospheres we're unlocking in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey are inhospitable environments, incapable of supporting human or typical animal life. That being said the array of organics discoverable in-game extends beyond traditional plant life or 'flora'. Some of the organics found are more fungal or chemosynthetic bacterial in nature, and others would sit well outside of any earth classification system - these could, in scientific terms, be considered fauna, but not in the traditional sense of the word and we want to be clear on what to expect in game based around the thin atmospheres that will be unlocked. In summary we use the term organics because this is a more representative and accurate term for what commanders may discover.

How many different Organics are present in Odyssey?
There will be a huge variety of organics available to discover in Odyssey with a large number of core species and further variants and subspecies planned for day one. The generation of these will take into account numerous factors including the compositional make-up of the planet and atmosphere, along with their geographical placement on that body.

Will Odyssey’s planetary improvements be applied to existing land-able planets without atmospheres?
Yes! The improvements to Odyssey’s planetary tech will be applied to our entire galaxy simulation so planets without an atmosphere will be more breathtaking than ever.

Will atmospheres be breathable in Odyssey?
The thin atmospheres you encounter in Odyssey won’t be breathable by humans so you’ll have to carefully manage your suit and air supply to ensure your survival - more on this to come.

I noticed there are different suits shown in the dev diary - are these available to all commanders?
Yes - these are just a couple of the designs that will be available to all commanders, regardless of body type – we just chose to show commanders with different loadouts.

How many types of suits will there be?
While we can’t share an exact number just yet we can confirm there will be a variety of suits in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. Their differences will extend beyond cosmetic changes with different suits specialised for different gameplay activities.

Will the suits have a flash light?
All suits come equipped with a flash light for exploration - more on this later.

We understand that you have many more questions around Odyssey and we are eager to share more with you in the coming months so please stay tuned for updates.

As always thank you for your support CMDRs o7
WOO-HOO! I was looking forward to trying and earn my own Tourist Beacon! Seriously. ;)

Another good post with straightforward information to help manage the community expectations.

If this is due to new CM team members, then job very, very well done and please keep it up.

Only thing that would make it better;
allowing a bit of player feedback early enough to affect new headline features involving gameplay loops or revisions of existing ones. Lord knows several of the past ones still need work but may never get it which is a silly waste of time and money.

Effusive.

Are you going to tell me that it is not a bit silly to thank for something that they took from us and now they return us, a year later and as if it were great news? :D
I remember congratulating them on the introduction of deep mining (which was great when it came out, before the prices skyrocketed), codex and galnet ... and they ditched them in no time ...Do I have to congratulate them 2 times on the same thing?

So will Odyssey add significantly to the ways in which one can take part in affecting the planned out story arcs that extend past its release, I wonder. :7

This game is by far the strangest game I have ever encountered.
  • Such potential. Such chaotic development.
  • Filled to the brim with idiosyncrasies, like a keybinding menu so large and non sensical that even the developer can't make a complete default setup.
  • Maddening gameplay mechanics like Engineers which only acts as a tedious unbalanced grind wall.
  • Introducing features no one asks for. Taking away features players love. Reintroducing them.
  • Engaging with the passionate community. Ignoring them completely.
And the list could go on.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry, but it's certainly one hell of a ride. Like it or not.

@Paul_Crowther First of all, there great news here for many of us! Thank you. I'm excited. \o/

Secondly. The outlet of information from the team and is well presented and digestible, facilitating and managing expectations from the community with what you plan on delivering.
In retrospect, now that we understand a bit better the scope & limitation you have, it could have been possible for the FDev team to calm and manage the critique of the 'missing lore' and 'Galnet' incidents at an earlier stage.

I'm not saying you did it wrong, but rather a retrospective view on the matter. You (as a team) could have been more verbose and clear on the intention of providing 'a commitment to years of stories, content aligned to lore and with a Galnet supporting these stories together with ingame events and assets'. I do remember the early communication as the Galnet went down and the Launchers providing 'black holes' of info. Then the communication black-out on the subject-matter from FDev that followed was not the best way to deal with it.
You (FDev) could have clear on the intention of a commitment to a detailed plan for this at an earlier stage to stem the tide of speculation and negative relations, but without giving any deadlines or details. Again, repeated the message with the same kind of clarity that you do here today.
I do understand the upper management have a say with release of such communication, but this is essential communication to make sure the community and the customers stay onboard for the journey you provide.

Again, thank you very much for the great summary and precise information you provided. Both in this post as well as the past few blogs (VR and planetary stuff) where you have upped the quality of the dialog you have with the community. I know now that I'll have much to look forward to going forward to 2022.

Sincerely, the Tard. o7

No, they've said on stream that the planned out story arc's are not dependent on if you have Odyssey or not. Everyone has full acces to both the galnet and CG. No matter if you've only got the base game, Horizons or Odyssey

Not quite what I was "asking", I think.

Now it depends on what you mean by "full access"; They also said that there will be stuff to do for everybody, pretty much whatever their vocation, so going by what you are saying here, that would then mean: "...except for any that could hypothetically be added with Odyssey... or Horizons for that matter".

I'd take it to quite possibly more mean that everybody can read Galnet and interact with all community goals, for each goal (EDIT: ...or "sub goal" (EDIT2: ...or "counter goal"), such as the usual "bring stuff", coupled with an accompanying: "kill those who try to prevent the bringing of stuff"), using whatever tools provided by your licence tier, rather than restricting taking part to the lowest common denominator of what can be done with the base game, which would be kind of sad, in a way.

Three cheers for Frontier! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

This is the best post about the game I've seen in some time. The return of Galnet, CGs, et alia is WELCOME (to say the least!). No more abandonware launcher! Yay!

Good news for the current game and for Odyssey! Thanks, Frontier!

Oh, and also, the surface improvements were originally promoted as part of Beyond (commonly referred to as "ice planets" because most work was focused there, but general improvements to scatter rock systems etc. were supposed to come to all planets).

So I would be very surprised if that was then put behind a paywall, especially when doing so would create technical and logistical headaches with instancing and multiplayer, as well as PR ones.

I'd be surprised too if the new planetary improvements are locked behind the Odyssey DLC paywall.

After all, if you don't want Horizon players to walk out on foot all you have to do is deny access to the ship's walkway ramp and prevent people from exiting their SRV.

Very much doubt you can access the planetary base interiors without having to walk in. Unfortunately, this will probably apply to orbital stations and outposts too.

So - if the suit is so important, I assume the cmdrs will actually BE in their suits, not just another holo? If so - can we expect that SRVs will be driven by cmdrs in flesh, same with fighters? If so - what will happen when you "die" outside your ship, for example when you were walking on the planet?
