Need story to save elite!

I purchased Elite (June 2020) because YouTube and old kickstarter videos showed stories, exploration of ships, e.t.c. along with flying the universe in my own ship, I was shocked it lacked these things, except the ships, it had those.

I've only been playing for a few months, but I'm already getting bored, I want to have fun when I play, not just grind out EVERYTHING.

FDev... its time to include story again. Your players want some narrative in our gameplay. We do not need another grind! Stop punishing your loyal customers and be responsive. We don't need endless grinds because that isn't fun, and if that's the primary plan for Odysee I'll not buy it. Give us story like you used too (e.g. thargoid war, community goals, e.t.c.) or you will lose us.

Also, if you include the ability to walk around our ships you'll gain an increase in micro transactions in the form of increased customization of ships interiors. And, you'll give players what they actually want. We want to see our ships inside more than anything, so why not finally delivery on your promise and let us see our ships. You said we'd be able to one day, it's been the better part of a decade, and it's past time you actually delivered on a promise.....or, just continue to flip off your players with a new grind loop, and watch your game slowly fail, your choice.

Community Goals were grinds... Nothing but grinds...

FDev is building something akin to a space simulator, Mining feels like a job because it really would be, if that's not satisfying? Combat, might not pay much, but it's fast paced gameplay. Then there's exploration, which is my personal favorite and I find rewarding all in its own. I like the breathtaking views of space.

As far as story, we playing the same game? There's tons of story, in fact, story has been going since the 80's, 1984 specifically I think, and it wasn't hard for me to find out what's what, and why. The finer details I'm still researching, but it doesn't take genius IQ to find out the history of the universe you're inhabiting.

What you need, is character building. Elite is NOT a game where you're just handed some super awesome all arounder super pilot, and expected to save the universe all on your own. You'd have better luck finding Raxxla from a drive-by scan then be that type of hero. The codex literally tells you all the information you need to build a character.

It's what I've done, although the Codex didn't exist when I first started out, had to dig that up myself. Neither did the fancy new tutorial systems. I was dropped in a station, in a sidewinder in the middle of no where. Figured out how to play on my own. Figured out the story on my own. And I built a character: Commander Nicolas Valkier. Part time explorer, part time researcher, full time Mercenary. I built his background story, what he likes, dislikes, why he exists, what he thinks of things, ect.

You literally have the power to build your own story, in ways that only D&D have given players the freedom to do. There will always be those who are less skilled then you, and there will always be those who will own your life within seconds (ESPECIALLY High Gravity worlds if you don't check their Gravity... Mistake you only make once. Just once.)

The game isn't made to be easy, it's punishing, it will grind you down and then build you back up. It isn't fast, it never will be fast, hell, I thought Fleet Carriers would forever change the gameplay, but already I see a massive amount of them under decom, so I'm thinking there will be less and less over time, maybe.

This is why I always tell people: Try it before you buy it. If there isn't a trial? Find some Let's Plays, look up on YouTube. It's not that hard.

Something doesnt add up. I mean welcome to the community you new player you and please makes yourself at home but being affected by things you had no knowledge of until a few months ago or no experience of? CGs had ended by June 2020 and the Tharg War as was is all but over.

Perhaps despite all the malice from people, thats not that actual point, maybe the idea is to release a game that people play and they will pay for that? Its not an unheard of business model and has worked for frontier for 25 years before micro-transactions even existed.

Building a character isnt ingame storyline .. sure its fun but not the same. I dont think CGs were great but they were an attempt to create an interactive story... the trick witn dnd is there is a dungeon master providing background... fd killed the dm when they took away galnet. Yes there are old stories but the dynamic part of the universe has been ended . Who knows maybe they will bring some form of story back but lets be clear here FD cut out a MAJOR part of the game for alot of us.. something like if they decided ... hey you cant land on some planets.... lets just delete those... And they initially promoted it as- hey we hear you want ingame lore to be more meaningful so we hired extra writers and are going to improve it..... ya thanks for that FD

New players these days, jeez.

Back in my day you had to wait at least 3 months before making wild and ludicrous proclamations on behalf of the entire playerbase.

It's easy to get the impression from watching YouTube videos that the lore/story is easy to access and is everywhere. The OP's point is valid. Granted no hes never done a CG and had no idea how boring they really were, it doesnt invalidate his meaning. The story is hidden as an Easter egg and isnt apparent to anyone new. How many of us posting here actually found half this crap without reading about it somewhere. "Oh my what's that dark spot down on that planet? Davs hope? That looks interesting. I think I'll go land and have a look."

That point is fair. The original clues if any were usually in GalNet and local Stations news feeds.

Now the clues are often contained in POIs in space, but it is just pot luck if you find one, but thats how Ive found all mine. I havent found Davs Hope yet though. Some are at notable spots or locations, some lore related and some event related. Some seem to be completely random.

New player or no he isnt wrong
Really? The OP is claiming to speak for everyone (which includes me). He isn't wrong?

Cutting down from a longer post....

The OP also claims that what the playerbase (in its entirety) wants more than anything is to walk around the inside of our ships.

Do you think that is not wrong?

If FD were to listen to that, prioritise walking in ships over everything else, and sacrifice other things, such as story, to deliver it, would you be happy? Do you think everyone would be happy? Do you think the OP would not have been wrong to make the claim they did? Would you or the OP stand up in front of everyone's who's upset about the lack of story and say 'we asked for this on your behalf'?

I generally tune out the "Im speaking for everyone" aspects - It is used so often... You have a point though. It kinda struck a chord with me in that it reminded me of the time I moved to a small town in New Mexico - was pretty bare bones.. two stop lights, a hand full of restaurants... but I figured "atleast it has a nice book store". The bookstore announced its closing about a week after I moved there - was gone in the month. ya im still mad about that :cry:

I do miss GalNet. Not really from a lore perspective, but it did make the galaxy feel more alive.

I suggested a way of marking articles that have impact on gameplay. Y'know, make orange backgrounds for lore/non-game affecting stuff, put a blue background or white one on the gameplay stuff, something. Or just symbols, you could put a star symbol to the left of gameplay articles.

As far as community goals are concerned... They were cool, sure. They added stuff, yeah. But I don't think they're gone, I just don't think they'll happen all that often, which I'm kind of torn on.

On the one hand, they were boring. Worse than a bad day mining boring, to only progress a small bit of lore that sometimes went no where (Bridging the Gap?).

On the other hand, it did add things to the game. Like the whole Colonia bit.

Yet, at the same time, we've seen player run community events spring up, like Turning the Wheel, or the Thargoid Hunting one that I can never remember the name of. I think FDev even pitched in on the Thargoid one, offering some kind of reward.

Given that, I'd love to see the return of GalNet, but I'd also love to see a different type of community goal.

So etching that will allow FDev to drop one, but how about players, too? Give players the ability to "request" a goal, and if enough people jump aboard, it becomes official or something.

I think the shuttering of GalNet was a mistake, and if anything they should have doubled down on that kind of background storytelling, not removed it entirely.

yeah, some kind of story progress would be great. Preferably some hint at some area so we have a place to search in and actually end up finding something for a change. That'd be great. Maybe they give us a bit something before odysse otherwise it's gonne be a bit too long without any progression.

Galnet as a news source alone infroming us about what other players might do and about story progressions and other news would be neat. Don't need to be community goals if it was up to me. Just news so people know what's happening without having to visit the forums for it (which most people dont do)

The whole point to Elite is you make your own story either by yourself or with others.

It's you, your ship and your imagination and has been since the inception of the entire franchise.

well, i'd still love to see some progress in the formadine rift thing or with the thargoids or the dark wheel. You might not be aware that we actually do have multiple storylines unfolding.
