Nerd Cubed FW Elite Dangerous - cringeworthy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNkWAZS2Bnw

I mean really, he is hilarious usually, but I ALWAYS hate it when he is overly cynical, even for games I'm not attached to, but with Elite he just relates lie after lie, all confident sounding as if we are supposed to trust his expertise.

Among the false claims I saw before I lost my stomach for the vid:
  • Elite is Euro Truck Simulator in space (it's false because trading is one minor part of the game) EDIT: Ok not "minor" but still, one PART of the game that can in theory be almost completely avoided
  • You barely ever engage in combat
  • The starter weapons on your sidewinder might as well be sold as they are "water pistols"

This made me cringe. Losing respect for him by the day...

I liked his videos back when he was doing 3 free game fridays, now I think the internet would be better off if he was banned from ever being on it. He does have a point about trading though. It's not a minor part of the game though, other than combat, it's one of the most used parts. You have trading commodities outright, trading missions, courier missions, smuggling, and most powerplay functions that're all based on trading. also as it stands, trading is the most profitable occupation in Elite:Dangerous.

Yeah I guess you are right. The game needs a lot of work, it's true. Still, I have probably spent around 20 hours trading of my 200+ hours and I'm doing alright. I have got most of my money from exploring, and I know plenty of people who have got most of it from combat.

I don't know about power play missions to be fair, but normal missions give you plenty of options. Just as many combat ones, and mining ones, as trading ones.

He is being very unfair - and using his power as a "respected" game critic to be overly negative and put people off a game with stuff that's plain false - just to be humorous and garner respect

Yeah that was a bit disappointing. I usually like his work, but I don't think he's a fan of the genre particularly and seemed to approach it with a view to not wanting to find anything to like about it.

There have been some very fair reviews of the game that have nailed the weaknesses as well as strengths. In this case, it was just rambling and talking about Euro Truck and not really having any understanding of the concept or why some people might want a game that didn't tutorialise everything.

Which is weird, because he never does tutorials*, and is known for hating games that hold your hand too much...

EDIT:

*except if they are funny. But you always see that when he plays a game, he never knows anything about it, always trying to figure it out himself. One of his best gimmicks is hitting every key on the keyboard until he finds the function he is looking for

Yeah, maybe he was drunk or something?

I kind of feel that lots of people would have approached Eurotruck with a very cynical attitude following its release. It's only after much word-of-mouth and many, many videos on YouTube that people generally started to accept it was actually quite a cool idea and not your traditional 'stick the sim name' on product.

With this video, I feel had it been a review of Eurotruck it would have been someone driving straight across the motorway because they couldn't be bothered to find out how to use the motorway, and then complaining bitterly that the game doesn't let them drive through a field.

I don't mind criticism in the shape of a "sarcastic rant". If done well it can be entertaining and still offer some actual information between the lines.

Yahtzee ripped several of my favorite games apart.

But this guy just comes across uninformed, and that's the absolute worst thing when trying to be "witty". Satire works for one reason only...because it's based on truth.

Haha, I liked it when he complained about his Weapons not firing and stating "Thermal Overload" - which is actually a very old small bug, as they should have stated "Capacitor Drained!" or something ;)

Also noteworthy that the messed up Bulletin Board System indeed does not work well for a Harmless starter Sidewinder.
(heck, I'm rated Deadly/Tycoon/Pioneer and Friendly/Allied to tons of Factions - but even I still often see a majority of Missions being either unavailable or nonsensical/illegal/Reputation-Killing)

To be fair I have just started a new cmdr and there are many more missions than there used to be that pay much more (a lot are smuggling missions though) I have traded up to a Cobra in no more than 5 hours just doing missions.

One question to the OP: why are you giving this idiot the attention he is obviously craving?

Lol, he doesn't need any attention - he already has an enviable 2 million subscribers. That's what I take issue with - he has a lot of power. In this case, negative press is better than no press.

Unfortunately, I can tell you from my own experience that most people don't think of him as uninformed. He is a very prolific gamer - and a good one at that. He knows his stuff. That's what bothers me as his opinion carries a lot of weight.

[*]Elite is Euro Truck Simulator in space

as much as i cant agree with this...... it has made me listen too this!, and a bit of deep purple on a friday is never a bad thing.

PS there is no doubt it has elements of ETS2 to it (which I am not sure why it is a bad thing, i love that game too!) but even tho i accept ED may be a little lacking in content, there is WAY more to it than just space truckin' in you want there to be.

1. 90% of players define their progress and achievements by their bank account and how big their ship is. Trading is the one and only most efficient way to get there. He is right.
2. If you don't explicitly choose to do so, you never will.
3. They are enough for some npcs.... so? He still isn't completely wrong. You won't have your sidey for longer than a day before upgrading to an eagle/viper/cobra anyway.

What he says about trading is not actually wrong, its valid opinion just like the "there should be more/I want to land on Planet" stuff is or his stance on the Size and what he prefers there. Nothing wrong with all his opinions there.
But it is a bit strange that he makes it looks like theres nothing else then trading, and the little bit he has to say about combat is awfully wrong for the most part. It seems he missed a lot of stuff and not did spend a lot of Time with the Game or informing himself about it in General. Which is weird, since he is normally very well informed. But we all have good and bad days.

1) really? IF I wanted i could afford an anaconda right now, however i do not have one and have not flown one since beta.
2) This has not been my experience. I have had many ships attack me
3) I stuck in my sidey for a good many hrs before getting in my eagle (ie probably over 25** - and that is excluding beta) And STILL go back to it now sometimes for a change of pace.

** unless by over a day you literally meant 24 hrs ingame time, in which case true you are probably right, most people will probably have, or be close to, wanting to try something new after 24hrs, but is that so odd? I cant think of a single other game where i would put more than that into the very 1st ship in the game before at least considering what toy to get out next. it does not mean the sidewinder is not a useful starting machine however.

PS whilst i do enjoy trading, my last 50mil or so has not been made through trading,

1. Trading is not the most efficient way to make money until you already have loads of money. Right now missions, combat bonds, mining etc. can all make more money than rare goods trading. Once you have a T7 or Clipper then Trading begins to shine - but so what? Even then there are plenty of ways of making money that are, yes, slower, but still not so slow they are pointless. If you don't want to trade and are not in a rush, then you can gain your bank account glory.

2. Yes you will - getting interdicted, doing most other professions involve risk. And anyway, doesn't matter. He is holding some weird position that unless combat comes to you then it's not a combat game. Wrong.

3. Doesn't matter, still don't get why he says "you might as well sell them". If you choose to make your first credits at RES points, then they will gain you all the money you need.

Which is weird, since he is normally very well informed.

Strongly Disagree - he is very lazy when it comes to games he isn't interested in. For games he loves, he knows everything about them inside and out. But for the majority of his games, he clearly has just installed them and started recording with no prior reading - not even a review it seems sometimes.

He made a lot of claims for someone who gets himself stuck in an endless USS approach and then immediately gives up on the concept of trying to understand the acceleration controls. All while loudly ignoring the manual.

Yeah, he made a video like this on Metal Gear Rising too. He couldn't understand the combat system, so while he was accidentally doing all the moves he was trying to do, he was so embroiled in complaining about those moves being literally impossible that he didn't notice himself doing them. So he hated that game.
