New Camera Mode

For immersion purposes, the External Camera should be a literal camera that you have to buy that takes up a weapon or utility mount OR a drone requiring an internal slot and multiple drones that expire when you leave regular space.
Whichever is least convenient for everyone that would use such a feature.

Looking forward to seeing your content!

The camera system looks fantastic, and there were a number of options there in the UI that they didn't show off. Exciting stuff!

And many of us cannot wait to see yours as well mate!

I think its going to be very interesting to see what you do too, it just opens so many doors for content creators.

But I really think, if the camera system is as usable as it seems, open more doors for those who have wanted to make videos, but could never get the right content to do it, Making the game more visually exciting to a much wider audience on youtube. Doing so will generate a lot more excitement for the game, and draw more people in.

On face value its an improvement but its yet to be seen how much freedom it will offer. That said something just occurred to me.

I wonder if when combined with multicrew if it will allow player crew to engage camera mode, thus allowing those not in command of the helm to be camera men. Potentially making for some awesome combat footage to be captured, etc..

They didn't seem to want to go into it in too much detail. Perhaps they are saving that for the next stream?

edit: ninja'd by Tor

Actually I was wondering about multicrew, but from the reverse perspective.. your NPC pilot in control of your ship, while your on the outside filming it.. But this may not be possible, we dont know yet.

Can't wait to see what cool shots content creators come up with.

I've read so many stupid (but serious) immersion arguments I can't tell if this is sarcasm.

This will be awesome for a lot of us. I've been aching for proper zoom/focus controls forever. Now, finally...

Many thanks to you, FD! 07

Yes, at least making it a small animated drone for people seeing it from the outside would go a long way.

No need to make it a module or having it deploy from a specific place, heck make it untargetable and invincible. You know, no need to make it cumbersome, keep it as is function wise. But just a little thingy that wouldn't scream "spectral projection space magic".

The camera does work in combat, just stick on some gimballed weapons are you are ready to dogfight in 3rd person ;)

That still wouldn't work as you wouldn't see who you're targeting. The only combat use I can see is an all turret build, possibly with a crew member controlling the turrets while the pilot flies in 3rd person.

3rd person combat not being in Elite is one of the main reason I play this game.
It would also be the main reason I stop playing this game.

3rd person combat without UI but still with targeting and all the same functions would be fairly balanced, and very fun too. The "advantages" people are mentioning would be more visual but I think that the ship radar does compensate for that.

I just hope this also means that I can finally use external cam during docking computer landings. Could finally see what exactly it is doing when it boost lands :p

Looks good. I wrote a piece of sci fi music that I wanted to put some Elite footage to, but waited due to being frustrated by the camera controls on the debug camera. Will have another go with the new features.

If it was a real object you could shoot and had to rebuy yes maybe.
But it wont be, it will probably be a fake object that cannot be destroyed by weapons and doesn't need to be bought or equipped.

A massive step into arcade game play.
Dont get me wrong the New camera its great, using it in combat as it is now is very bad imho.

I wonder if there will be any ease-in/ease-out functionalites for the camera movement.
The start and end of each adjustment looked a bit rough in the demostration. However, they used a Xbox controller, if I've seen rigth. I am curious, how a "proper" joystick will be able to handle the camera.

Recently I said that FD dont care at all about "beauty shots camera" and that we will never get this kind of tool... THANK you FD for proving me wrong. This is hands down my most awaited 2.3 part.
Also - do ppl really think that slowly going in to cam mode, adjusting your angle of view just to pick at your enemy will give you any advantage? With out hud and info you will get killed faster if anything :D
