New graphics card... Wow...

Hey guys,

Long story short, I had two older cards (amd 6950) running in crossfire but as you know this game doesn't support it yet so I was limited to running the game at low settings. My friend just sold me a GTX 980ti dirt cheap as he is upgrading his system, so I've cranked up the graphics to max and I got to say, the game looks amazing and runs really well! [big grin]

Although once you get a part with 3000+ guests the CPU starts to take a beating, but still very playable.

Cheers

Nice. I have a 770 and it plays great as well. I was thinking of getting a 980ti sometime this year, but now I'm going to hold out for the 1080.

Same here - I have a 770 card and was thinking of upgrading later this year - the 1080 looks nice and for about the same price as the 980ti (if not cheaper) so might as well go for that - I'll have to investigate my motherboard and hope it can take it - I've been out of the hardware business for a while now.

As for the game - the problem at the moment is that it's very CPU usage not GPU, this should improve overtime as the optimisation will come later in the year.

Wasn't considering selling my 980sli system but 2pm today we will find out exactly what is capable with the new 1080.

I am however thinking of holding out till next year for the 1080ti or seeing if I can really hold of till Volta hits (2018 currently) and thus just a new system really then. I can't see PC being that taxing considering I can play at moment just fine with a single 980 at 4k, assuming that sli will be supported in future. Is it in Elite Dangerous?

Regards,

Adam

I have only a GTX 580 and it runs fine on my system until I get to about 3000, then it starts to drop frame rate. I run it on Medium settings. When I saw the game I was thinking that I will need to upgrade my system to play this game, but thankfully I did not.

Curious, Which brand of the 980ti?

Hi Brett, its a MSI 980ti.

I ended up getting the 980ti (5 month old card) for less than half the retail price of a new 1080, so that was the only reason for not waiting for 1080. 1080 is about 10-20% quicker in 1440p Having said that, if you are buying new, definitely go for the 1080. And if you are planning on using Direct X 12, then go for AMD Fury/Fury X or wait for AMD's revolutionary Polaris or Vega.

But if your on a budget and don't want to spend the big bucks you will be able to pick up one of the following cards much much cheaper and still run the game maxed out in 1080p and 1440p.

  • GTX 960
  • 680
  • 970
  • 780ti
  • 980
  • 980ti

  • 7970
  • AMD 280
  • 290
  • 290x
  • 380
  • 390
  • 390x

This still being an early alpha I was really impressed how smooth the game is now running on max settings. No stuttering what so ever, fluid and well, I've built a gigantic park stretching across the entire map and it's amazing to see a miniature world, if you will, come to life.

I believe the only challenge will be the high guest numbers and processor load. Even my friend's current gen top end i7 start to take a real beating once the guest numbers go above 3000. But that is understandable since the guests are so smart and life like.

well the way you made that sound makes it sound like you heard the game runs like crap, which is in no way the case, the game runs butter smooth until you fill the park with guests (2000+) does it need optimization? of coarse, its in alpha. but honestly for being this early of a build, it actually runs really well.

I actually have the EVGA 980ti liquid loop GPU. Was wondering about the heat generation on the fan cooled model vs the liquid loop i have. The fanspeed on this GPU's liquid loop leaves much to be desired for in terms of heat dissipation. :( (Should have saved up and got a proper full liquid cooling system later this year.)

And ... Soon :

I will never use an air cooling solution ever again :D Once you tried watercooling you can't go back. And by watercooling i mean a real full loop, not an all in one package. I know it's not cheap but the temperature difference is huge.

KFA2 980 Ti (ambient temps : 23° / No OC / gpuz used for temps)
stock cooling : idle : 38° / Planet Coaster : 79°
watercooling (480 + 240 ; fan @ 600rpm) : idle : 25° / Planet Coaster : 31°

Lol, total opposite for me.

Had full custom loop etc and never sore the point. Could push the card and cpu as far between air and water and as long as temps are not maxed out it's not an issue tbh.

Just not worth monies if all you want is to cool. If you want something that looks bad*** though then fair play.

£ 619 for the GTX 1080
£ 391 for the GTX 1070

Maybe you can wait [big grin]

Yes I can wait - I feel the need to treat myself to a beast of a card. From what I've read about the 1080 recently for my system the 1080 is OVERKILL - I only run at 1920x1080, I do have an i7, 16gb ram system so still another good few years of power, my monitor can only do 60 fps as well - hmm maybe time for a new monitor...

Where do you get the £619 price for the 1080 from?

It has been the figure banded about based on release price in other countries and exchange rates etc. Will see 27th May (next Friday) as that is when pre-orders in the UK open I believe.

Honestly depends what you are upgrading from, the 1080 is only worth the cash if your going from 980 or less but anyone with a 980ti might as well stay as they are. I would suggest actually buying a 980ti second hand as they have been going for £300 ish and are only around 15% slower so even if you went 1440p 144Hz monitor your be absolutely fine and you can get a new monitor with monies saved then.

I was wondering if all CPUs have the lagging issue? because mine lags slightly after so many guests and CPU is 97%, If so is there a way we can reduce the guests?
